    Notes: The N gene product of coliphage λ, with a number of host proteins (Nus factors), regulates phage gene expression by modifying RNA polymerase to a form that overrides transcription-termination signals. Mutations in host nus genes diminish this N-mediated antitermination. Here, we report the isolation and characterization of the rpoAD305E mutation, a single amino acid change in the carboxy terminal domain (CTD) of the α subunit of RNA polymerase, that enhances N-mediated antitermination. A deletion of the 3′ terminus of rpoA, resulting in the expression of an α subunit missing the CTD, also enhances N-mediated antitermination and, similar to rpoAD305E, suppresses the effect of nus mutations. Thus, the N–Nus complex may be affected through contacts with the CTD of the α subunit of RNA polymerase, as is a group of regulatory proteins that influences initiation of transcription. What distinguishes our findings on the N–Nus complex from those of previous studies with transcription proteins is that all of the regulators characterized in those studies bind DNA and influence transcription initiation; whereas the N–Nus complex binds RNA and affects transcription elongation. A screen of some previously identified rpoA mutations that influence transcription activators revealed only one other amino acid change, L290H, in the CTD of the α subunit, that influences antitermination. Although our results provide evidence that interactions of the α subunit of RNA polymerase must be considered in forming models of transcription antitermination, they do not provide information as to whether the interactions of α that ultimately influence antitermination occur during initiation or during elongation of transcription.

    Notes: Various seafoods were treated with fresh chlorine dioxide (ClO2) solutions (20, 40, 100, and 200 ppm total available ClO2) in 3.5% brine for 5 min, and bacterial loads and sensory quality were evaluated after 0, 3, and 7 d storage on ice. The ClO2 treated groups at each time period had lower bacterial counts than nontreated and brine-treated groups. The differences in bacterial counts were significant, especially for groups treated with 100 and 200 ppm ClO2. Treated ClO2 solutions contained very low or no bacterial loads. Treated red grouper and salmon with 100 or 200 ppm ClO2 developed skin discoloration (lighter color) and a chocolate color in the gills.

    Notes: Sturgeon species have attracted interest for aquaculture due to high value of the flesh, caviar and wild stock depletion. Lipid was extracted from sturgeon muscle using the Bligh and Dyer procedure. Fatty acids from total lipid were methylated using boron-trifluoride in methanol. Fatty acid methyl esters were analyzed by gas chromatography as weight %. The fatty acid profiles of lipids were different between cultured and wild sturgeon. Wild sturgeon had higher levels of 16:0, 16:1ω7, 18:1ω9, 22: 4ω6 and 22:5ω6. Cultured fish had higher levels of 18:2ω6, C20 and C22 monoenes, 20:5ω3 and 22:6ω3. Stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA) was used to develop a mathematical model to distinguish the two populations; the levels of 16:2ω6, 22:5ω6 and phytanic acid accurately identified the two fish populations.

    Notes: Two controlled feeding trials were conducted in which Terramycin and/or Romet-30 were incorporated into either semipurified or practical diets to provide 25, 50 and 100% of the recommended dosages when fed to juvenile channel catfish at 3% of body weight per day. Data for 4-wk and 8-wk weight gain, feed efficiency, and survival of channel catfish fed the various diets were analyzed to determine if these responses could be enhanced by dietary inclusion of either or both antibiotics. In addition, 4-wk and 8-wk muscle samples from fish of each dietary treatment were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography for oxytetracycline (OTC), ormetoprim (OMP) and sulfadimethoxine (SDM) residues. The performance of juvenile channel catfish was not enhanced by the inclusion of Romet-30 or Terramycin in semipurified or practical diets. Moreover, fish performance tended to decrease relative to that of fish fed the control diet when antibiotics were supplemented in the diet. Residues of OTC, OMP and SDM in the fillets of catfish fed medicated diets generally increased in a time- and dose-dependent fashion. Residue concentrations above the legal tolerance limit of 0.1 mg/kg were noted in most samples from fish fed diets medicated at 100% of recommended levels and in many of the samples from fish subjected to lesser dosages, particularly in those that had been fed diets with Romet-30. Allowing catfish that were previously fed medicated diets a 3-wk or 4-wk withdrawal period effectively decreased the OTC, OMP and SDM contents of fillets to undetectable levels.

    Notes: Abstract A particularly attractive feature of CDMA wireless systems proposed in the Telecommunication Industry Association's standard IS-95 [1] is their ability to get into what is known as “soft handoff”. A mobile in soft handoff maintains simultaneous radio links with multiple base-stations which enables it to make use of the best quality leg most of the time. This is believed to result in a reduction of the fade margin that is needed to provide the desired coverage in a given geographical area in the presence of log-normal shadow fading. This paper presents an analysis of fade margins for systems allowing soft handoffs (e.g. CDMA) and those where only hard handoffs are possible (e.g. FDMA, TDMA). The analysis is based on a model for hard handoffs with hysteresis and connection delay and confirms the belief that soft handoffs result in smaller fade margins.

    Notes: Abstract  The patterns of hydrating and solidifying with the compositional variation of phosphorus-rich, phosphorus-calcium-rich and aluminum-calcium rich regions in ternary system CaO-Al2O3-P2O5 has been studied in detail, and two new ternary compounds L and H have been synthesized here. The results indicate that the region of 48–56% P2O5 doesn’t present cementitiousness, which contains mainly crystal phases of β-C2P(2CaO·P2O5), α-C3P(3CaO·P2O5) and AlPO4; the phosphorus-calcium-rich region of 21–35% P2O5 exhibits substantial cementitiousness, which contains mainly crystal phase of α-C3P and certain amount of CA(CaO·Al2O3) and new phases L/H; and the aluminum-calcium-rich region of 8–18% P2O5 is full of promise for cementitiousness. It contains mainly new crystal phase L and certain amount of α-C3P and CA. The hydration and solidification mechanisms have been preliminarily analyzed by means of XRD, XPS and DTA. It appears that crystal phase CA might hydrate directly to the stable phase of C3A·6H2O in the phosphorus-rich case of 21–35% P2O5; new phase H has the behavior of rapid setting; and L, being a dominant phase, can prevent cement pastes from significant strength loss in long curing cycles.

A numerical processing procedure presented previously is used for the evaluation of the experimental data. A detection limit of 1011 atoms Fe/cm2 on GaAs surfaces has been achieved.
