Notes: We have measured the effect of pressure on As diffusion in Ge. Diffusion anneals on ion-implanted samples were carried out in a high-temperature diamond anvil cell using fluid argon as a clean, hydrostatic pressure medium. At 575 °C over the pressure range 0.1–4 GPa, pressure slightly enhances the diffusivity, characterized by an activation volume of −1.7±1.4 cm3/mole or −0.12±0.10 times the atomic volume. The results call into question the prevailing view that diffusion of groups III, IV, and V elements are mediated entirely by vacancies. If diffusion of As is mediated entirely by vacancies then either the vacancy formation volume must be unexpectedly low or the energy of vacancy migration must be unexpectedly high. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A high-temperature pressure calibration technique using Sm-doped Y3Al5O12 (Sm:YAG) crystal as the pressure calibrant has been developed by studying its Y1 through Y10 fluorescence peaks (frequencies from 15 600 to 17 200 cm−1) at pressures (p) from 1 bar to 19 GPa and temperatures (T) from 20 to 850 °C in externally heated diamond anvil cells. The entire spectrum was fit to a sum of ten Lorentzians plus a linear background. The positions, relative intensities and widths were represented by empirical functions of p and T. Several fitting routines for p determination were created based on these dependences, and were tested on various high-p and high-T experimental Sm:YAG fluorescence spectra. The p values obtained from the fitting routines are compared with those obtained from the ruby and the nitrogen (N2) vibron pressure scales. A fitting routine is proposed that can determine p from 20 to 850 °C within an estimated uncertainty of 0.4 GPa. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the relationship between the usual and general Hodgeconjectures for abelian varieties. For certain abelian varieties A, weshow that the usual Hodge conjecture for all powers of A implies thegeneral Hodge conjecture for A.

Notes: Abstract  A Multivariate analysis and principal component analysis was performed on 37 samples gathered from different regions in north Jordan. Twenty-eight descriptors (variables) for each sample were used in these calculations, among them were metal ion concentration, such as Pb, Cr, Co, Zn, Ca, Mg, Fe, Na, K, Al, Cu, Ni, Ti, Si and Mn. Other descriptors were pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and grain sizes. It was found that the samples form three clusters, namely, agriculture, industrial and waste treatment plane regions. Statistical analysis showed that the samples are classified into seven classes, with the majority of the samples classified into three clusters. The first three principal components explained 99.2% of the variance. This method offers a method to classify geographical regions on a pollution bases and to determine the possible sources of pollution for such regions. This study showed that some of the agricultural farms were remote from the pollution sources clusters with polluted regions such as industrial or waste treatment complexes.

Notes: Abstract We previously identified an estrogen response element in the 3′-flanking region of the c-fos protooncogene [1, 2]. This element, GGTCAnnnCAGCC, has one half-site identical to that of the consensus ERE (GGTCAnnnTGACC) but only limited homology to the second half-site. Because of this non-canonical sequence and atypical location in the 3′-untranslated region of an estrogen target gene, we decided to analyze sequences adjacent to this element for the possible presence of other regulatory elements. We now report that the 635 base pairs downstream of the c-fos ERE contain: (i) an unusual cluster of 7 GGTCA hormone response-like elements; (ii) potential binding sites for other known DNA binding proteins; and (iii) a sequence specific binding site for a non-estrogen receptor protein present in hormone target tissues.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study is to evaluate directly, using a reduced experimental system, the nature of interactions between voltage-gated potassium channels and the resting membrane potential. Xenopus oocytes were injected with various concentrations of cRNA coding for a delayed-rectifier potassium channel Shaker-IR. The effects of the density and kinetics of the expressed channels on resting membrane potential is explored in isolated (``inside-out'') patches. The channel density is given in terms of maximal conductance (G max), measured from the maximal slope of the I-V curve under voltage clamp conditions. The capacitance of the experimental setup is approximately 1 pF. At high channel densities (G max 〉 10 pA/mV) the mean membrane potential is stabilized at approximately −60 mV. This resting membrane potential is more than 35 mV positive to the reversal potential for potassium ions under the same experimental conditions. Analyses of voltage clamp experiments indicate that at high channel densities the mean membrane potential is determined by the rates of channel activation and deactivation, but is not affected by the rates involved in the process of slow (C-type) inactivation. In contrast, at lower channel densities membrane potential is very unstable, and its mean value and amplitude of fluctuations are strongly affected by the process of slow (C-type) inactivation.

Notes: Abstract The mitochondrial citrate synthases (EC 4.1.3.7) of pummelo, potato and Arabidopsis are activated in crude extracts by dithiothreitol treatment and/or inactivated by the strong oxidizing agent diamide. Surprisingly, homology modeling reveals a potential disulfide involving two cysteine residues which are also present in the redox-insensitive model enzyme, pig heart citrate synthase. Energy minimization calculations suggest that differences in the charge distribution enhance disulfide bond formation in the plant mitochondrial citrate synthase and inhibit disulfide bond formation in the mammalian enzyme.

Notes: Abstract The plasma-spraying technique is used in this study. Two types of ceramic coating (Al2O3–13 wt% TiO2 and Cr2O3–5 wt% SiO2–3 wt% TiO2) with and without NiAl bonding coating are subjected to bonding strength and wear tests. Determining the most suitable coating and coating technique and solving an industrial problem are the main objectives of this study. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers
