Abstract We have applied evanescent dynamic light scattering (DLS) to study the film formation of polymer latex dispersions. A dynamical glass transition is observed. When the particles fuse, the scattering rate decreases. After fusion, a new fast process (τ r 1 ms) is observed, which is not present in bulk DLS data. We attribute the process to discontinuous relaxation of surface induced stresses (transient micro-cracks).
