Notes: Experimental data are presented along with calculations which describe the near-threshold transverse modes in AlAs/GaAs/InGaAs vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with two different Bragg reflector systems. The Bragg reflector systems are composed of either AlAs/GaAs quarter-wave stacks or a combination of AlAs/GaAs and ZnSe/CaF. The temperature dependence of the lasing mode is studied for three different structures, and it is shown that higher-order lasing modes are favored with strong cavity detuning when the cavity resonance exists at a wavelength greater than the bulk emission peak. Important aspects of the lasing behavior are described by calculating the spontaneous mode which occurs at the lasing wavelength. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The spatial distribution of leopard seals along the fast-ice edge in the austral spring and summer of 1992 and 1993 in Prydz Bay, Antarctica, was determined by aerial surveys. Fewer individuals were observed within the area, and the seals observed were larger, in 1992 than in 1993. Comparison of the distributions and relative sizes of the seals suggests that there may be an age-related difference in spatial behavior. The greater degree of separation among older seals may be due to intraspecific aggression increasing with age, a hypothesis supported by the high incidence of intraspecific scarring noted on leopard seals in this region. The seals’haul-out behavior was negatively related to wind-chill index.

Notes: Two groups of underwater vocalizations were identified in a three-year study of two captive leopard seals, Hydurga leptonyx (one female and one male at Taronga Zoo, Sydney). This was supplemented by recordings over three months from a male at Marineland, New Zealand. The sexual state of the seals at Taronga was deduced from serum hormonal concentrations: the female was considered to be in estrus at specific times during the breeding season. The seal at Marineland, New Zealand was assumed to be sexually mature on the basis of size and age. Of 12 different underwater sound types recorded, six were produced by the seals at Taronga Zoo during agonistic interactions (local calls) and were heard through most of the year. The other six sound types were produced by lone seals. These broadcast calls were produced by the female only when sexually receptive, and by the mature male during December and January, months believed to be the breeding season of wild leopard seals. We propose that underwater acoustic behavior is important in the mating system of this species, and that broadcast calls are used by mature females to advertise their sexual receptivity, and possibly by mature males in search of mates.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The paper demonstrates the existence of singular stress layers in normal cross-sections of helically reinforced hollow cylinders. The material is assumed to be an ideal fibre-reinforced material. The theory is illustrated by its application to the problem of a linear elastic, balanced angle-ply cylinder which is ringclamped at both ends and subjected to internal pressure.

Notes: Summary The paper briefly reviews a mathematically simple theory which has been substantially developed in the last ten years to describe the behaviour of highly anisotropic materials such as fibre-reinforced composites and laminates. Applications of the theory are discussed, and in particular we consider its predictions for the finite deflection of a reinforced cantilever and the pure bending of a helically-reinforced cylinder.

Notes: Summary An ideal fibre-reinforced material is defined to be inextensible in one or more directions through each point of the material. It has been found to be a good model for predicting the deformation and stresses produced in real materials which are very much stronger in resisting extension in those directions than in any other possible mode of deformation. We consider a circular cylindrical tube of incompressible ideal fibre-reinforced material in which the reinforcement throughout its thickness is directed along two families of helices making angles ±ϕ with the axis of the cylinder. It is shown that the kinematic constraints allow pure bending deformations, and the solution for a linearly elastic reinforced cylinder is explicitly determined. This kinematically admissible deformation is also statically admissible, and can be supported (or produced) solely by the action of bending couples on the ends of the cylinder. The bending moment-curvature relation is deduced, and compared with the Euler-Bernoulli equation for prismatic beams. The effect of different values of the winding angle ϕ is discussed, and we show that the case tan φ=√2 is of particular importance.
