    Notes: Summary Sulfur (S) cycling in a chestnut oak forest on Walker Branch Watershed, Tennessee, was dominated by geochemical processes involving sulfate. Even though available SO 4 2- was present far in excess of forest nutritional requirements, the ecosystem as a whole accumulated ∼60% of incoming SO4−S. Most (90%) of this accumulation occurred by SO 4 2- adsorption in sesquioxide-rich subsurface soils, with a relatively minor amount accumulating and cycling as SO 4 2- within vegetative components. Organic sulfates are thought to constitute a large proportion of total S in surface soils, also, and to provide a pool of readily mineralized available S within the ecosystem.

    Notes: Abstract The seasonal and diurnal variations of ozone mixing ratios have been observed at Niwot Ridge. Colorado. The ozone mixing ratios have been correlated with the NO x (NO+NO2) mixing ratios measured concurrently at the site. The seasonal and diurnal variations in O3 can be reasonably well understood by considering photochemistry and transport. In the winter there is no apparent systematic diurnal variation in the O3 mixing ratio because there is little diurnal change of transport and a slow photochemistry. In the summer, the O3 levels at the site are suppressed at night due to the presence of a nocturnal inversion layer that isolated ozone near the surface, where it is destroyed. Ozone is observed to increase in the summer during the day. The increases in ozone correlate with increasing NO x levels, as well as with the levels of other compounds of anthropogenic origin. We interpret this correlation as in-situ or in-transit photochemical production of ozone from these precursors that are transported to our site. The levels of ozone recorded approach 100 ppbv at NO x mixing ratios of approximately 3 ppbv. Calculations made using a simple clean tropospheric chemical model are consistent with the NO x -related trend observed for the daytime ozone mixing ratio. However, the chemistry, which does not include nonmethane hydrocarbon photochemistry, underestimates the observed O3 production.

    Notes: Abstract The diversity and incidence of fungal organisms recovered from the urine of patients at a tertiary level medical center was examined and compared over time. Mycologic culture records were examined for the 12 months prior to, and following the introduction of fluconazole to the hospital formulary in December 1991. 290 patients with 588 urine cultures from which fungi were recovered provided the database for this study.Candida albicans was the most common organism recovered in these cultures, followed byC. tropicalis, Torulopsis glabrata andC. parapsilosis. C. albicans was recovered alone in the urine of 54.4% of patients with funguria in the initial period and in 49.3% during the second. Funguria withT. glabrata nearly doubled (8.7% versus 17.1%) between these intervals (p〈0.05). Fungal urine cultures in the second period were also noted more frequently to grow multiple organisms (mixed cultures), and to show a greater diversity of species. Review of the prescribing of antifungal agents to these patient groups revealed no clear pattern of prior drug exposure influencing this change. Although introduction of fluconazole at this institution was associated with a trend toward the recovery of a higher frequency of fungi in the urine which are notC. albicans, no direct evidence to implicate the introduction of this important new antifungal as the cause of this phenomenon was found.

    Notes: Summary The systemic availability of a new antidepressant, zimelidine, and of its pharmacologically active metabolite, norzimelidine, was studied in six healthy male volunteers. Three single doses of zimelidine (25 mg and 100 mg orally and 25 mg i.v.) and two single doses of norzimelidine (25 mg orally and i. v.) were given to each volunteer allowing at least seven days between administrations. Plasma concentrations of zimelidine and norzimelidine were determined in serial blood samples by HPLC. Following oral zimelidine peak plasma concentrations of the metabolite were attained about 3 h after dosing. Oral administration of norzimelidine itself resulted in a plasma concentration profile for this compound that was similar to that observed after oral zimelidine. Utilising the plasma concentration data following intravenous infusion of each compound, the elimination half-lives for zimelidine and norzimelidine were calculated to be 5.1 h (range 4.3–6.0) and 15.5 h (range 10.6–22.9) respectively. The total body clearances of the 2 compounds were similar at 0.52 l · min−1 (range 0.26–0.70) for zimelidine and 0.56 l · min−1 (range 0.28–0.83) for norzimelidine. The substantially longer elimination half-life of norzimelidine was apparently the result of a larger volume of distribution (9.4 l · kg−1; range 7.8–11.4) for this metabolite, as compared to zimelidine (3.21 · kg−1; range 1.6–4.9). The calculated bioavailability of zimelidine was 26% (range 9.1–39) after the 25 mg oral dose, and 29% (range 14–46) after the 100 mg dose. The bioavailability of norzimelidine was 66% (range 36–91). However, oral administration of zimelidine resulted in as much or more norzimelidine reaching the systemic circulation, as the oral administration of norzimelidine itself. This is important as a large part of the activity of the drug may be due to the metabolite.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: The pharmacokinetics of flosequinan were studied in a group of 18 patients with chronic cardiac failure. Results: After a single dose of 100 mg, Cmax of the parent compound (2.52 mg ⋅ l−1) was recorded at 1.4 h, and of the sulphone metabolite flosequinoxan at 21.7 h. The plasma elimination half lives of the parent compound (6.4 h) and of the metabolite (54.3 h) were prolonged compared to previous studies in normal volunteers. After repeated dose administration for 36 days, the kinetics of the parent compound and metabolite remained essentially unchanged with an expected significant accumulation of metabolite (Cmax 8.4 vs 3.21 mg ⋅ l−1). No adverse effects were observed. Conclusion: It is possible that altered drug kinetics in patients with heart failure, probably related to altered hepatic blood flow, could contribute to drug toxicity.

    Notes: Abstract An I-J-subregion controlled determinant is expressed on Ly-1 inducer and Ly-1,2 acceptor T cells in the feedback suppression circuit. Ly-1 T cells absorb the I-J antibody reactive with the Ly-1,2 acceptor T cell, suggesting that both inducer and acceptor T cells have the same 1-J determinant. Since less than 10 percent of Ly-1 or Ly-1,2 T cells are killed by anti-I-J plus complement treatment, the I-J determinant demarcates functionally distinct subsets of both the Ly-1 and Ly-1,2 T-cell sets. This I-J determinant is not expressed on a detectable number of Ly-1 helper T cells which induce B lymphocytes to produce anti-sheep red cell antibody in tissue culture.

The second backcross progeny showed greater recombination frequencies for 75% of the pairs of adjacent markers, but there was no obvious indication that this effect was localised to particular regions of the chromosomes. Four chromosomes increased in genetic length more than twofold, while overall, the total map was 66% longer. The possible causes of this discrepancy are analysed. A sex difference in chiasma distribution and/or frequency at meiosis is thought to be the most likely explanation. The implications of this finding for mapping and map-based applications are discussed.
