Notes: [Auszug] The gene for Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) has been introduced and expressed in Nicotiana tabaccum (tobacco). Transgenic tobacco plants expressing VHb exhibited enhanced growth, on average 80–100% more dry weight after 35 days of growth compaired to wild-type controls. Furthermore, ...

Notes: [Auszug] The intracellular accumulation of osmoprotectants, such as glycine betaine and other low molecular weight compounds, is a well investigated response of environmental stress occurring in a wide range of organisms. By introducing the bacterial bet A gene, encoding choline dehydrogenase (CDH), into ...

Notes: Abstract The topograms revealing the anisotropic distribution of defects in the volume of monocrystalline YAG samples have been obtained by the thermoluminescence (TL) technique. It has also been shown that the anisotropic distribution of the lattice defects affects strongly the shape of the TL curves. The greatest changes in the TL intensity were observed in the areas of the samples distributed symmetrically every 120°. It was noted that the selective distribution of the TL intensity is caused mainly by the presence of the (211) facets as well as growth striations formed during the growth process. The groups of lines observed in the TL spectrum have been ascribed to the Tb3+ ions, excited owing to the radiationless energy transfer from the bound exciton states (BES).

Notes: Abstract We have studied the chromosomal content in 68 normally fertilised freeze-thawed human embryos of good morphology from 34 patients with an average maternal age of 32,6 years. Forty embryos showed post-thaw cellular division and twenty-eight post-thaw cleavage arrest. After spreading of the embryos on microscope slides, analysis of chromosomes X, Y, 15, 16, 17 and 18 was performed using two rounds of fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH). According to the results, the embryos were divided into four groups: (I) normal, all nuclei uniformly diploid, (II) diploid mosaics, normal diploid blastomeres in combination with abnormal blastomeres, (III) abnormal, all nuclei abnormal, (IV) chaotic, the chromosome constitution varies randomly from cell to cell. Approximately 25% of the embryos had normal number of the chromosomes tested, while the majority of the embryos were abnormal. Most of the abnormal embryos were diploid mosaics (57%). This was true for the embryos showing cleavage division as well as the embryos showing cleavage arrest. Our data show a slightly higher incidence of abnormal embryos compared to those obtained with FISH in non-cryopreserved embryos and confirm that the majority of preimplantation embryos fertilised in vitro contain abnormal blastomeres. The results, mechanisms, significance and implications are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The influence of the exogenous polyamines: putrescine, spermidine and spermine, on the frequency of protoplast divisions for 2 genotypes of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) was analyzed. Protoplasts were cultured by the agarose disk method on Saunders and Doley medium supplemented with either hormones or polyamines, or hormones combined with polyamines. The latter supplement led to a statistically significant increase in plating efficiency. The improvement in division index was caused mainly by spermine.

Notes: Abstract The spectral distribution of the thermoluminescence (TL) of YAG:Nd crystals coloured by x-ray irradiation at room temperature (RT) and at 80 K has been investigated. The spectral distribution of TL in the uv-, visible and near ir ranges shows that the energy transfer by bound exciton states (BES) to the RE3+ ions (Nd3+ and Tb3+) decreases with increasing temperature. The TL spectrum in the uv range is ascribed to the hole defect centers. Diminution of the energy transferred by the BES to the Nd3+ and Tb3+ ions is the direct cause for the occurrence of the group of lines ascribed to the Nd3+ ions in TL observed at LT, whereas at RT and higher only the groups of Tb lines are observed.

Notes: Abstract The statistics for the distribution of laminar phases in type-IIIintermittency is examined for the map $$x_{n + 1} = - ((1 + \mu )x_n + x_n^3 )e^{ - bx_n^2 } $$ . Due to a strongly nonuniform reinjectionprocess, characteristic deviations from the normal statistics are observed. There is an enhancement of relatively long laminar phases followed by anabrupt cut-off of laminar phases beyond a certain length. The paper alsoexamines the bifurcation structure of two symmetrically coupled maps, eachdisplaying a subcritical period-doubling bifurcation. The conditions forsuch a pair of coupled maps to exhibit type-II intermittency are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Feeding preferences in two tropical omnivorous fishes, Oreochromis shiranus and Barbus paludinosus were similar when offered an array of planktonic food in aquaria. The two species were stocked into earthen ponds at different rates. Abiotic and biotic variables were measured over a period of 120 days. Data analysis by multiple linear regression did not reveal significant negative coefficients between adjacent trophic levels, which would have indicated top-down effects. It is suggested that the results are due to uncoupling between trophic levels in tropical freshwater ecosystems.
