    Notes: A flow system for cyanide detection using Saccharomyces cerevisiae is described. This sensor system consists of two oxygen electrodes and immobilized S. cerevisiae whose respiration activity is measured by the oxygen electrodes. Since cyanide inhibits S. cerevisiae's respiration, it can be detected by measuring this inhibition. Two types of systems were constructed, characterized and compared. One is a membrane-type flow system in which S. cerevisiae was immobilized onto a cellulose membrane. The other is a reactor-type flow system in which S. cerevisiae was immobilized onto the glass beads. The sensor response was examined in the range from 0 to 15μM. The reactor-type sensor system displayed lower detection limit (0.15 μM) and better stability (16 days).

    Notes: Five cerebrosides, CE-1-1, CE-1-2, CE-1-3, CE-3-1, and CE-3-2, and a ganglioside molecular species CG-1 have been obtained from the less polar and polar fractions, respectively, of the chloroform/methanol extract of the sea cucumber Cucumaria echinata. The structures of these glycosphingolipids have been determined on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence. The cerebrosides show lethality toward brine shrimps. On the other hand, the ganglioside CG-1 exhibits neuritogenic activity toward the rat pheochromocytoma cell line, PC-12 cells.

    Notes: Vinyl-type monomers containing the pyrrole ring, such as 2-vinylpyrrole (2-VPyrr), N-(pyrrol-2-yl)methylacrylamide (PMA), N-methyl, N-(pyrrol-2-yl)methylacrylamide (MPMA), 2-allylpyrrole (2-AP), β-(pyrrol-1-yl)ethyl vinyl ether (PEVE), 2-diallyl-aminomethylpyrrole (DAMP), and 3-(2-pyrrolylmethyleneimino)propene-1 (PIP) were synthesized by various reactions involving characteristic properties of the pyrrole ring. Radical homopolymerizations and copolymerizations of these monomers were studied. In the homopolymerization of conjugated monomers such as 2-VPyrr and PMA, chain transfer to the pyrrole-containing monomer was remarkable but not degradative. The copolymerization parameters, that is, the values of r1, r2, Q1, and e1 of 2-VPyrr, were determined to be 0.066, 0.69, 5.53, and -1.36, respectively in the copolymerization of 2-VPyrr (M1) with MMA (M2). The Q and e values of the monomers containing a heteroaromatic ring such as 2-vinylpyrrole, 2-vinylfuran, and 2-vinylthiophene were evaluated by the molecular orbital theory. The e value of PMA was found to be negative (-0.64) in the copolymerization with styrene, although e for acrylamide derivatives is generally positive. This may be explained by the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the carbonyl group and NH group of PMA. That is, attraction or polarization of π-electrons in the vinyl group of PMA is weakened by such hydrogen bonding. From the results of copolymerization of 2-AP with various comonomers, the comonomers could be classified into three categories: class a monomers, in which both Q and e values are largely positive, can copolymerize with 2-AP; class b monomers, having small e values, homopolymerize and can not copolymerize with 2-AP; class c monomers, in which both Q and e values are small. The Q and e values of the comonomer must be largely positive in order to permit copolymerization with an allyl-type monomer.

    Notes: The copper complexes and the cobalt complex with the ligand of 3-(2-pyrrolylmethyl-enimino)propene-1 (PIP) or p-(2-pyrrolylmethylenimino)styrene (PIS) were synthesized and homopolymerizations and the copolymerization with styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate and acrylic acid studied. In the polymerization of chelate monomers, inhibition of radical polymerization by the central metal ion was observed, but the chelate polymer could be obtained only if the initiator was present in higher concentrations in the feed. It is considered that the strength of inhibition depends on the electronic configuration of d-orbitals of the central metal ion. The initiation mechanism of the cupric chelate monomer may be reduction of the metal ion by the redox reaction with a primary radical via the intramolecular electron transfer through the π-conjugated system of the ligand prior to the propagation step. This mechanism was verified by studying the redox reaction of various copper complexes with DPPH. In the system of the copper complex containing PIS and acylic acid the alternating copolymer could be obtained at any mole fraction of monomer mixture in feed.

    Notes: Separation of the 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (PMP) derivatives of simple disaccharides (maltose, cellobiose, gentiobiose, lactose, and melibiose) by affinity capillary electrophoresis was investigated using lectin-containing neutral phosphate buffers, filled in a linear polyacrylamide-coated capillary. When Lens culinaris agglutinin (LCA) was added, the derivatives of glucobioses were retarded with varying magnitudes depending on the amount of LCA and were well separated from each other and from galactosyl glucose under optimized conditions. Addition of Ricinus communis 60 kDa agglutinin (RCA60) to the phosphate buffer gave a different migration profile, in which the derivatives of galactosyl glucoses were more retarded than those of glucobioses. However, addition of either lectin did not accomplish complete separation of the derivatives of all these disaccharides even under optimum conditions. The addition of two kinds of lectins in appropriate proportions improved separation. Thus, the binary system composed of LCA and RCA60, as well as LCA and soybean agglutinin from Glycine max (SBA), gave better separation of these derivatives, giving peak tops for all derivatives.

    Notes: The preparation of organic-inorganic polymer hybrids consisting of carbon-carbon and siloxane chains was investigated by radical polymerization of 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MAS) followed by acid-catalyzed hydrolytic polycondensation. The condensation of poly(3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) (S-PMA) of various molecular weights Mn =830-12000 prepared by polyaddition provided transparent and flexible free-standing hybrid gel films. The mechanical properties of these films were highly dependent on the carbon-carbon chain length: with an increase in the carbon-carbon chain length, the elasticity of gel films increased, while the tensile strength and Young's modulus decreased. Hydrolyzability of S-PMA decreased with an increase in the carbon-carbon chain length, resulting in the formation of rubber-like films with flexibility. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: 1-Phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (PMP) derivatives of component monosaccharides in glycoproteins (fucose, galactose, mannose, N-acetylgalactosamine and N-acetylglucosamine) and epimeric aldopentoses (arabinose, lyxose, ribose and xylose) were well separated from each other by capillary electrochromatography on a Hypersil ODS column with a mixture of 50 mM N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-2′-(2-ethanesulfonic acid) buffer, pH 6.0 to ∼ 6.3, and acetonitrile (2.2:1 v/v) as eluent. The elution of these compounds showed relatively strong dependence on the pH and concentration of the buffer salts contained in the eluent, as compared to the elution by pressure-driven high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on the same stationary phase, but separation of PMP-monosaccharides was better than that by HPLC. Retention times of PMP-monosaccharides were highly reproducible with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of ∼ 0.6%, and quantification with an RSD less than 5% could be achieved using 3-O-methylglucose as an internal standard.
