Notizen: Using the static form of a system of equations for seismic waves (de la Cruz & Spanos 1989), we show how various compressibilities can be calculated in a straightforward manner. The results obtained have many points of contact with those found in the literature. In particular, we verify all identities among drained compressibilities given in, e.g., Zimmerman (1991), thus providing an alternative route towards them. The undrained compressibility is described within the context of this work and its relation to the various drained compressibilities (Gassmann 1951) is verified. For greater experimental flexibility, we introduce a one-parameter family of compressibilities which includes the drained and the undrained compressibilities as members. The family of compressibilities is also used to obtain an expression for the pore-pressure build-up coefficient. In this work we also address the problem of macroscopic shearing. Experiments are proposed for the determination of the macroscopic shear modulus, leading to natural expressions for ‘Young's modulus’ and ‘Poisson's ratio’ for the porous medium under drained conditions. We also establish connections with Biot's (1956a) parameters.

Beschreibung: The criteria developed in the error analysis of 2θ powder data for cubic and uniaxial phases [Frevel (1978). J. Appl. Cryst. 11, 184–189] are extended to biaxial single-crystal data. A methodology is described for applying the focusing matrix method to exhaustive sets of 2θ data for pinacoid and prism reflections measured on a four-circle diffractometer. A spheroidal crystal of hyperpure Si is used to calibrate a Syntex P{ ar 1} automated diffractometer and to establish an effective wavelength for graphite-monochromated Mo Kβ 1 β 3 radiation. A high-quality single-crystal of cis-[bis(7,9-dimethylhypoxanthine) (ethylenediamine)platinum(II)] hexafluorophosphate, [Pt(C2H8N2)(C 7H8N4O)2].(PF6)2, serves as a test case for comparing the normal least-squared analysis with the focusing matrix method. It is concluded that an absolute accuracy greater than one part in 2000 for cell constants of biaxial crystals is difficult to achieve from automated four-circle diffractometer data (2θ ≤ 40°) for non-spheroidal crystals with linear dimensions ca 0.2 mm.

Notizen: Abstract. Nitrogen (N) is of enviromental concern if it leaches or is released as nitrous oxide (N2O,). In order to utilize N efficiently in grazed pasture systems, the fluxes of N from various sources need to be quantified. One flux is N mineralization from organic sources. Previous work has examined incubation and chemical extraction of soils as methods to determine N mineralization potential. This paper re-examines new and previously published data on net mineralization, with the aim of examining the relationships between soil thermal units, net N mineralization (measured using acetylene incubations) and dry matter production in pastures. Net N mineralization is expressed as N turnover (net N mineralization as a % of total soil N). Relationships are developed between soil thermal units, dry matter production, and N turnover. These relationships have potential in advising farmers on potential N mineralization from soil organic matter. A second use of such relationships is the modelling of N transformations in pasture systems. Further work should explore the effect of soil moisture on such relationships and examine the relationship between soil thermal units and uptake of N by pasture.

Notizen: The effect of annually switching sward management between cutting regimes that simulated rotational grazing and those for forage conservation vs. maintaining a constant management regime was studied by testing for ranking-order changes between six perennial ryegrass varieties.Total dry-matter (DM) yields were found to change in response to an annual switch in management. When under a conservation management and switched in the next year to simulated grazing, all six varieties yielded more in that year than when they were maintained constantly under simulated grazing. Similarly, when under a simulated grazing management and switched in the next year to conservation, all six varieties yielded less than when maintained constantly under a conservation management. These yield differences were largely expressed in spring of the year following the management switch.Differences in the ranking order of varieties were observed between the constant sward management treatments and the alternating managements. However, in these changes in variety ranking, no variety was consistently favoured or disadvartaged by the annual switch in management. Therefore, no clear evidence was produced that an alternating management system had any consistent effect on variety ranking and the observed changes were possibly due to the normal year-to-year variation frequently recorded in variety performance trials.

Notizen: Two red clover (Trifolium pratense) cultivars, Red Head (tetraploid) and Kuhn (diploid), were sown at a seed rate of 13 kg ha−1 either alone or in mixture with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) cv. RvP sown at seed rates of 10, 15, 20 or 30 kg ha−1. RvP was also sown alone at a seed rate of 30 kg ha−1 and received nil or 300 kg ha−1 fertilizer a−1 fertilizer N. All plots were established using the barley cultivar Midas sown at a seed rate of 100 kg ha−1 as a nurse crop.Neither clover cultivar nor ryegrass seed rate significantly influenced either dry matter harvested or botanical composition over the 3 harvest years. On average over all years the grass-clover mixtures produced 75% of the yield of the N-fertilized RvP, 125% of the clover monocultures and 225% of the unfertilized RvP. The red clover contribution to the total dry matter harvested of the mixtures averaged 45–60%. The dry matter concentrations of the mixtures were considerably higher than those of the pure clover stands. In the third year yields were markedly reduced in comparison with those in the first and second years. It was concluded that Italian ryegrass can be a suitable companion grass for red clover. Its superior yielding capacity over other grasses such as perennial ryegrass or timothy under a conservation management can be coupled to advantage with red clover to give a sward which Is essentially stable, at least over a 2- to 3-year cropping period, although giving slightly reduced yields in the third year. Italian ryegrass-red clover mixtures, without the use of fertilizer N, can produce high DM yields of good quality herbage.

Notizen: Three Uages containing 18.7, 35.2 and 51.0% DM were given to young beef cattle without supplementary barley or with a daily allowance of 1.8 or 3.6 kg air-dry fortified barley. Each diet was given to 9 individually fed animals, the mean fasted liveweight of which at the start of the experiment was 304 kg. The dafly voluntary DM intake was recorded for a 10-day period for the 9 animals on each silage without supplementary barley. The mean DM intakes per kg W0.73 were 58.4, 94.6 and 104.1 g for Silages 1, 2 and 3 and the intakes increased curvilinearly with the DM content of the silage. The mean daily liveweight gains on Silages 1, 2 and 3 were 0.63,0.73 and 0.75 kg, respectively; the relationship was significantly linear (P 〈0.01). The barley supplement also had a significantly linear CP 〈0.01) effect on daily gains. The mean daily gains for 0, 18 and 3 6 kg fortified barley per day were 0.54, 0.74 and 0.84 kg, respectively. The DM and digestible organic matter required per kg liveweight gain were not significantly affected by the DM of the silage, but were significantly (P 〈 0.01) affected by supplementation. The metabolizable energy (ME) values of Silages 1,2 and 3 were 2.46, 2.52 and 2.50 Meal/ kg DM, respectively. The supplementary concentrate increased the ME concentration significantly (P 〈 0.05), although the overall increase was small. The mean values were 2.49, 2.54 and 2.61 Meal/ kg DM, respectively, for 0, 1.8 and 3.6 kg fortified barley per day. The digestibilities of DM and organic matter were not significantly affected by the type of silage, but there was a significant increase with increasing intake of supplementary barley.
