Notes: Abstract How a DSC result is influenced by the particle size distribution of a powder sample is shown, and a simple and optimal method to be included in a routine DSC analysis (e.g., purity determination) to improve the reliability of the analysis is proposed. In case ofα-Al2O3 powder, most reliable heat capacity data can be obtained by preparing a powder with a self-similar particle size distribution with a distribution constant of 0.7, and by compressing it under a pressure of 1.5 MPa for a duration of 5 min or longer.

Notes: Abstract A DSC method for evaluating the surface area of etched Al foils for use in high performance electrolytic capacitors is presented. A linear relationship between the etching degree (effective surface area) and the thermal resistance of the sample is obtained by means of DSC, based on the transient phenomenon. This method using the transient state in DSC measurement is not only novel, but also rapid and simple in evaluating the surface area of an etched aluminum foil. The method is effective even when the Al foil has a naturally oxidized surface.

Notes: Abstract The previously described method involving the use of transient DSC was applied to pharmaceutical powder compacts and to ceramic powder compacts. The samples were prepared by compressing powders of pentaerythritol tetraacetate and two kinds of alumina powder (differing in particle size distribution) up to a pressure of 20 MPa by using a jig. For pentaerythritol tetraacetate, a linear relationship was obtained between the parameter obtained by DSC and the compaction pressure.

Notes: Summary A redesigned interface is reported for use in the detection of microcolumn liquid chromatographic effluents with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The solutes eluting from the column are continuously deposited onto a 50mm diameter KBr disk as a “buffer-memory”. The disk is rotated by a stepper motor with a controlling electronics. After the chromatographic run, the disk is simply transferred to the spectrometer and the transmission spectra are measured as the disk rotates. The use of such a large KBr disk as a substrate permits to obtain spectra of the components having a large capacity factor.

Notes: Abstract The mouse Mx1 gene encodes an interferon(IFN)-inducible nuclear protein and confers resistanceto influenza virus infection. The standard laboratorymouse strains all carry the Mx1- allele andare susceptible to influenza virus. In this study, severalmouse strains established from wild mice were tested todetermine their Mx1+ or Mx1-allele status with polymerase chain reaction-restrictionfragment length variation (PCR-RFLV), sequence analysis, reversetranscription (RT)-PCR, and immunofluorescence staining. All of the mouse strains originating from wild mice werefound uniformly to carry the Mx1+ allele. Therefore, it is conceivable that the Mx1+allele in wild populations serves a function againstsome pathogens related to orthomyxoviruses. The PCR-RFLVand sequence analysis allowed us to classify theMx1+ alleles of the laboratory and wild-origin mouse strainsinto distinct classes. RT-PCR and immunofluorescencestaining demonstrated that the Mx1 transcripts andproteins were induced by IFN-alpha/beta in macrophages from wild mouse species.

Notes: Summary Polymerization conditions of dl-phenylalanine N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) by m, p-vinylbenzylamine were examined for the preparation of (vinylbenzylimino)oligo(dl-phenylanaline NCA) macromer (VB-OPhe) with narrow molecular weight distribution. According to the results obtained, i.e., under the condition of short polymerization time (ca. 2 h) and in relatively high concentrations of the NCA in THF, the polymerizations of the NCA were carried out to give VB-OPhe macromers, which were found to have very narrow molecular weight distributions. Furthermore, their functionalities were proved to be approximately unity by the polymerization method.

Notes: Summary The effects of mixed solvent systems and anions on the rate of reaction of the title compounds were investigated. The results were shown to be best interpreted in terms of ion-pair formation and solvation-desolvation effects, in addition to the factors included in the outer-sphere electron transfer rate theory expounded by Marcus.

Notes: The intrisic viscosity [η] of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was determined in aqueous solutions with various concentrations cb of borax (Na2B4O7) as functions of molecular weight M and concentration cs of NaCl as an added salt. Polyelectrolyte viscosity behaviour was observed for the systems containing both borax and NaCl, due to the complexation with negatively charged borate ions B(OH)-4 · [η] changes depending on the ionic strength I. It was found that the Stock-mayer-Fixman treatment for the molecular-weight dependence of [η] is valid in the lower molecular-weight range (M 〈 105), even though the present PVA chain contains some intrachain crosslinks. Theta conditions can be attained at an appropriate concentration cs Θ of NaCl. The value of cs Θ is dependent on cb, but the conformational parameter from the Stockmayer-Fixman treatment K0 is almost independent of cb. The effect of intrachain crosslinks becomes evident only as a considerably large negative value for the excluded volume parameter B at infinite ionic strength. In addition, the electrostatic part of the expansion factor α3e was found to be linearly correlated to a reduced parameter (M/I)1/2 for all cb systems, from the slope of which the charge density was estimated.

Notes: Ten fractions of poly(allylammonium chloride) were investigated at 25°C in sodium chloride solutions of various concentrations, cs, by viscosity and light scattering techniques. The molecular weight (Mw)-intrinsic viscosity [η] relationships were established at four NaCl concentrations. The unperturbed dimensions estimated from the Stockmayer-Fixman plot are independent of cs. The second virial coefficient A2 and the excluded volume parameter B as well as [η] were found to be proportional to cS-1/2 and to have negative values in the limit of infinite cs. In addition, it was found that the electrostatic part of the expansion factor can be expressed in terms of a reduced parameter (Mw/cs)1/2 in a fairly wide range of Mw and cs.
