    Prostacyclin stimulation of the activation of blood coagulation factor X by platelets (1986)

    Description: When platelets were incubated with prostacyclin, prostaglandin E1, or prostaglandin D2 at concentrations insufficient to increase the level of adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP), coagulation factor X was activated by a platelet cysteine protease. Prostacyclin or prostaglandin E1 at higher concentrations increased the cyclic AMP level and inhibited the activation of factor X by platelets. Inhibition of platelet adenylate cyclase by 2',5'-dideoxyadenosine allowed the activation of the protease at higher concentrations of the autocoids.     Notes: We present results of Raman scattering from coupled phonon-plasmon modes in Se-doped n-Ga0.52In048P alloy. Due to the small energy separation between the Γ- and the L-point conduction-band minima for this alloy composition, a significant fraction of the free carriers at room temperature are present in the L-conduction-band valley, giving rise to a multicomponent plasma. The carrier concentrations extracted from the Raman spectra for the different epilayers are in good agreement with the free electron concentrations determined by capacitance-voltage measurements. We employ the light scattering technique to extract the carrier concentration in the n-type emitter layer of a GaInP-based solar cell. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A local spectral sum rule for nonrelativistic scattering in two dimensions is derived for the potential class v∈L4/3 (R2). The sum rule relates the integral over all scattering energies of the trace of the time-delay operator for a finite region Σ⊆R2 to the contributions in Σ of the pure point and singularly continuous spectra.

    Notes: Abstract The gradual exhaustion of existing deposits of a depletable non-renewable resource such as oil tends to shift the supply price curve of the resource upwards, increasing its marginal cost. Advances in technologies for exploration and production act as a brake on such upward shifts. Thus, there is a tug-of-war between the gradual exhaustion of existing deposits and technological progress. Using a recently developed constrained least-squares regression technique, we demonstrate that technological progress was the dominant force of the two during the first part of this century, causing a secular drop in marginal costs, but that this situation eventually was reversed, and that the gradual exhaustion of deposits gained the upper hand, causing marginal costs to increase. The turning point occurred around 1971–72. We also discuss the forecasting of the possible current upward drift of marginal costs.

    Notes: Abstract An expression has been derived for the temperature dependent exchange integral for a pair of interacting shallow donors substituted in a dielectric material. This has been achieved by taking into account the phonon induced mixing of excited orbital states with the ground orbital states of the impurity centres. The results have been used to explain the temperature narrowing of the EPR line width observed by some workers in phosphorus doped germanium at low temperatures. Good agreement between theory and experimental results seems to favour the proposed mechanism in preference to one of motional narrowing due to hopping.

    Notes: Abstract Equivalent width calculations for some electronic and vibration-rotation transitions of the molecules PO, PH, MgH+f, and CN have been carried out for a few umbral, photospheric, and facular model atmospheres. It appears that a few weak lines of these molecules might show up in the umbral spectrum. Le Blanc bands of CN are too weak for detection in the solar spectrum.
