Notes: Anelastic relaxations of amorphous Zr65Al7.5Cu27.5 have been studied in the range of the glass transition and in the supercooled liquid. Applying a force step function, an anelastic aftereffect of the form exp(t/τ)β (Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts function) is expected with an exponent β〈1. From the measurement a value of β=0.67±0.03 is determined at Tg which confirms the empirical correlation between the fragility index m (36.4 for Zr65Al7.5Cu27.5) and β, established by Böhmer et al. This result is another indication for the metallic glass Zr65Al7.5Cu27.5 being a rather strong glass former. Furthermore, a strong increase in β just above Tg is found and is interpreted in the framework of a cluster model. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract— A new fatigue domain diagram, recently introduced by one of the authors, makes it possible to demonstrate the fatigue behavior of specimens under varying stress amplitude loading both qualitatively and quantitatively. The diagram is briefly reviewed and crack propagation and damage summation of steel specimens under two level and multi level tension-compression loading are simulated and discussed. Typical patterns of low-high and high-low sequence levels are explained, predicted and, with careful classification, shown to follow certain cumulative damage trends. Correlation with experimental results is shown and discussed. The main conclusion is that one can show repeatable trends in H-L and L-H two-step and multi-step loading sequences, only for cases where the local material properties are not drastically changed, and the failure pattern is similar (critical crack propagation or gross yielding) in all stages of the tests. Damage accumulation, expressed as additional crack length, is clearly shown on the general fatigue diagram.

Notes: The whole fatigue domain has been divided into six Werent zones, each governed by a separate fatigue regime. Some of these regimes coincide with a known classification of fatigue, and others are new regimes, where new prediction methods have been introduced. The proposed predictions are to be considered as practical curve fitting relations for special cases, but those cases can also be fairly general and useful for design purposes. The proposed fatigue diagram can be used as a basis for a quantified explanation of several known fatigue phenomena.

Notes: By comparison of the accuracy and the merging R factor (Rmerge) of artificially created X-ray data sets, it is demonstrated that Rmerge is a poor predictor for the precision of X-ray data. The more often a given reflection is observed, the more precise the average intensity is, whereas Rmerge has a tendency to be higher at higher data redundancy.

Notes: Four different phasing methods have been applied to the determination of the crystal structure of the 40 amino-acid mating pheromone of the unicellular ciliated protozoan Euplotes raikovi. The difficulties, failures and successes in attempts to solve the structure by: (1) molecular replacement, (2) direct phasing using the `Shake and Bake' algorithm, (3) isomorphous replacement, and (4) multiple-wavelength anomalous disper- sion are described. The structure was first solved by molecular replacement, and then was the first successful structure determination by `Shake and Bake' without the direct involvement of its authors. A description of the current status of the high-resolution refinement of the structure is also given. The model is refined against 1 Å resolution data to an R factor of 12.9%, and includes H atoms and discretely disordered side chains.

Notes: Abstract This review discusses the ambiguity of results obtained from dual-choice feeding tests, especially in relation to the study of effects of experience. Induced preference experiments done this way can be caused by up to nine potential changes in caterpillar behavior. In addition different physiological mechanisms that could lead to the process of induced preference are discussed. These include habituation to deterrents, the increased ability to process xenobiotics, the acquisition of specific positive responses, sensitization, and associative learning. These different processes might relate to function in different ways so that distinguishing them is important to progress in understanding the phenomenon. Suggestions for experimental designs that provide details on processes involved are indicated.
