Notes: When treated with two equivalents of a butyllithium/potassium tert-butoxide mixture, terminal olefins carrying unprotected hydroxy or carboxy groups generate allylmetal intermediates which can be trapped with chlorotrimethylsilane to afford functionalized (Z)-2-alkenyltrimethylsilanes. One equivalent of the superbasic reagent suffices if the unsaturated alcohols are first protected as acetals before being subjected to the metalation/silylation/hydrolysis sequence.

Notes: (Z)-(3,3-Dimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ylidene)methyllithium can be readily generated by treatment of (Z)-3-bromomethylene-2,2-dimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptane with tert-butyl-lithium. At -75°C, the organometallic intermediate is configurationally stable and reacts with a variety of electrophiles under stereochemical retention.

Notes: An improved method for the preparation of ethyl 2-fluoro-3-methyl-2-butenoate (3) is described. The two stereoisomers [(E)-4 and (Z)-4] obtained after γ-bromination can be separated and can be individually converted into the corresponding diethyl phosphonates. The PO-ylides generated by α-deprotonation of the latter lose their stereochemical integrity by rapid torsional equilibration of the ester tail. Thus, Horner-Wittig reactions accomplished with benzaldehyde and (Z)- or (E)-(β-ionylidene)-acetaldehyde lead inevitably to stereorandomization at the terminal, ethoxycarbonyl-bearing double bond affording (E)- and (Z)-isomers in 50:50 to 15:85 ratios, depending on the reaction conditions. The new double bond, however, is formed with perfect trans-selectivity.

Notes: The lithium α-(dimethylamino)alkoxides resulting from the nucleophilic addition of an organolithium reagent to N,N-dimethylformamide are basic enough to deprotonate alkyltriphenylphosphonium salts suspended in tetrahydrofuran. The aldehydes liberated by the spontaneous decomposition of the resulting α-amino alcohols (hemiaminals) undergo a Wittig reaction with the simultaneously generated phosphorus ylides to afford olefins in excellent overall yields. This in situ method offers the unique advantage in its applicability to labile aldehydes which otherwise would become prey to (Z/E)-isomerization or self-condensation processes.
