    Notes: The effect of a pipeline corridor constructed through an ecological reserve in Southern California was investigated by assessing plant species composition and soil chemistry. A homogeneous plant community comprised primarily of exotic annuals was found along the entire length of the corridor. This community has low similarity to the adjacent native plant communities. Soil organic matter was significantly less on the disturbed corridor than in contiguous undisturbed areas. Both available nitrogen and extractable phosphorus values were greater in the disturbed corridor. By contrast, total nitrogen was significantly higher outside the pipeline. The more labile litter of the exotic annuals allows increased mineralization along the corridor than does the more recalcitrant litter of the native perennial shrubs in the undisturbed areas. Once established, the weedy exotic annual litter may completely turn over organic matter and nitrogen, favoring the persistence of the weedy annuals. These exotic annuals appear to be moving into three of the native communities - grassland, coastal sage, and oak woodland - that have less organic matter and a more open plant canopy. Poor restoration efforts can lead to the establishment of such exotics, subsequent invasion into the surrounding undisturbed habitat, and degradation of the reserve.

    Notes: Characteristics are presented for Yersiniu enterocoliticu-like organisms isolated from vacuum-packaged beef and lamb stored for 21-35 days at l-3°C. Isolation of this organism was more frequent after 28 days of storage under vacuum conditions than under nonvacuum conditions (leaker packages). A higher incidence of isolates was obtained from cuts packaged under high vacuum conditions.

    Notes: A comparison of three relatively rapid methods of determining free fatty acids concentrations in cheese was performed by correlating the results with a more laborious but accurate gas chromatographic (GC) technique. Acid Degree Values were found to correlate poorly with the GC data, particularly for short chain fatty acids. Values obtained using a Copper Soap Method correlated closely with the GC data for total and long chain fatty acids, but did not correlate as well with short chain fatty acids levels. The Extraction-Titration Method was found to be a simple and reliable technique that yielded values which correlate closely with short chain fatty acid concentrations.

    Notes: A qualitative screening revealed the occurrence of lipase, esterase, protease, amylase, endo-1,4-β-D-glucanase, xylanase, pectinmethylesterase, polygalacturonase, catalase, β-D-glucosidase and β-D-galactosidase activities in the technical Aspergillus niger enzyme under study (Lipase 2212 D, Röhm). The isolation and purification of lipolytic activities were performed by combination of DEAE-Trisacryl M ion exchange chromatography, Sephadex G 50 gel filtration and hydrophobic chromatography using Phenylsepharose CL-4B. The individual purification steps were checked by specific enzyme visualization in ultrathin agar gels after ultrathin-layer isoelectric focusing (UIEF). Two UIEF homogeneous lipase isoenzymes (I and II) were isolated and characterized by the following parameters: isoelectric points (I: 4.0; II. 3.5); molecular weights (I: 31000 daltons; II: 19000 daltons); carbohydrate contents (I: 6%; II: 9%) and compositions; pH optima (I, II: 5-6); substrate specificities and various effectors.

    Notes: Uptake of [15N]-ammonia was more sensitive to UV-B exposure than the total 14CO2 fixation rate of Lithodesmium variabile Takano. Short-term UV-B radiation (15 min) had practically no effect on the kinetics of [15N]-ammonia, whereas there was an effect on [14C]-bicarbonate uptake rate. A significant reduction was found after 30 and 60 min UV-B stress. The time course of photosynthetic uptake of 15NH4Cl at several wavelengths was markedly depressed at shorter wavelengths (irradiation with WG 280). A short-term (11 min) exposure to ultraviolet radiation had no influence on the [14C]-labeled photosynthetic products. However, the [15N]-label of several amino acids and the ratio of [15N]-glutamine to [15N]-glutamic acid varied after irradiation with different ultraviolet wavebands. The results are discussed with reference to UV damage to the key enzymes of nitrogen metabolism.

    Notes: HIV encephalitis is the common pathologic correlate of HIV-dementia (HAD). HIV-infected brain mononuclear phagocytes (MP) (macrophages and microglia) are reservoirs for persistent viral infection. When activated, MP contribute to neuronal damage. Such activated and virus-infected macrophages secrete cellular and viral factors, triggering neural destructive immune responses. Our Center's laboratories have begun to decipher the molecular and biochemical pathways for MP-mediated neuronal damage in HAD. This review will discuss the salient clinical and pathological features of HAD and highlight the recent advances made, by our scientists and elsewhere, in unraveling disease mechanisms, including the role of chemokines and their receptors in the neuropathogenesis of HIV-1 encephalitis.

    Notes: Yersinia enterocolitica counts of inoculated beef and pork as determined from confirmed isolates picked from trypticase soy agar plates were similar to the counts of confirmed enamel-black colonies on bismuth sulfite agar plates. With three strains of Y. enterocolitica increases in count occurred on raw beef held over a 10-day period at 0–1°C. When inoculated raw or cooked beef and pork were stored at 7°C (0–10 days) or at 25°C (0–24 hr) large increases in Y. enterocolitica count occurred. At 25°C the increases in Y. enterocolitica counts were somewhat greater on cooked than on raw products. These differences in count may have been caused by (a) differences in the physicochemical characteristics of the meat (raw vs cooked) and/or (b) differences in the level and type of microbial flora that developed on these products. In addition to Y. enterocolitica, Staphylococcus and Micrococcus spp. often were dominant on cooked products, Pseudomonas and Microbacterium spp. on raw meats.

    Notes: Compounds of the 3,4-dihydro-ionone series as models for the photochemistry of γ, δ- and δ,∊- unsaturated ketones and aldehydes.The photochemistry of γ, δ- and δ,∊-unsaturated carbonyl compounds of the dihydro-ionone series has been studied, with special attention to the investigation of oxetane formation versus hydrogen abstraction.UV.-irradiation of the dihydro-β-ionone compounds with structure A (1, 7, 14, 18, 24, 29) led to isomeric ethers with structures B (2, 8, 15, 19, 25, 30), C (3, 9, 16, 20, 26, 31) and D (4, 21, 27), isomeric bicyclic alcohols with structure E (5, 10, 17, 22, 28), and photoreduction products with structure F (6, 11, 12, 13). Photolysis of dihydro-γ-ionone (32) gave a complex mixture containing fragmentation product 35, hydrocarbon 36, β-ambrinol (34), oxetane 33, as well as dihydro-β-ionone (1) and three of its photoproducts (2, 3, 5). The dihydro-α-ionone compounds 37 and 40 gave mixtures of fragmentation products and the oxetanes 38 and 41. Irradiation of the side-chain homologues 42 and 45 yielded 43, which photo-cyclizes to 44. In contrast, 3, 4-dihydro-3′,4′-dehydro-β-ionone (46) gave merely the isomeric open-chain triene-ketone 47.The structures assigned to the ethers 2, 3, 33, 38 and to the alcohols 5, 10, 13 could be confirmed by chemical reactions and mutual interconversions. The structure of the ether 21 had to be established by X-ray analysis, details of which are described.A novel intramolecular hydrogen transfer is involved in formation of ethers B. The photocyclization A → D probably proceeds by addition of the carbonyl-C atom to the double bond (A → h), followed by methyl (1 → 2)-shift (h → i). Process A → h may also be involved in formation of compounds of type C and E.
