Notes: Abstract Novel softening has been found in the transverse elastic constant (C 11–C 12)/2 below 50 K in single-crystalline La1.86Sr0.14CuO4 (LSCO) by high-precision ultrasonic measurements in magnetic fieldsH along thec axis. With decreasing temperature, this lattice softening persists down to the superconducting transition temperatureT c(H), which is reduced to 14 K by applying fields up to 14 T. BelowT c(H) the softening turns to rapid hardening. This behavior indicates the presence of lattice instability of the orthorhombic (Bmab) structure in the normal state of LSCO, which disappears in the superconducting state. This is evidence for the intimate interplay between high-T c superconductivity and the lattice instability in LSCO.

Notes: Abstract A novel microscopic method of muon spin rotation for negative muon (μ−) attached to oxygen is applied on highT c materials LaSrCuO. The paramagnetic shift and relaxation rate are measured as a function of Sr concentration and temperature. Analysis shows the large difference in shift and relaxation between two different sites. A large anisotropy was also observed by preliminary measurements along different crystalline axes.

Notes: Abstract The paramagnetic state of the muonic atom formed by the negative muon (μ −) bound to the oxygen in highT c LaSrCuO which was found in our recentμ − spin rotation experiments was applied to probe an interaction between the paramagnetic electron and the highT c supercurrent. The observed enhanced spin relaxation rates of the (μ −O) system in the superconducting state revealed the presence of such an interaction.

Notes: Abstract The association of several amphiphilic drugs with α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins has been measured by use of drug-sensitive electrodes. Drugs investigated are hydrochlorides of chlorpromazine, dibucaine, tetracaine, and procaine, and valethamate bromide. Each drug forms the drug:cyclodextrin=1∶1 complex with α- and β-cyclodextrin, and both the 1∶1 and 2∶1 complex with γ-cyclodextrin, except valethamate which only forms the 1∶1 complex. The strength of the 1∶1 complex formations is in the order of βCyD〉α-CyD〉γ-CyD. The association constant of the 2∶1 complex in drug-γ-CyD is larger than that of 1∶1 complex. The free energy change of the conplex formation has a positive correlation with that of the micelle formation of drugs. The deviation from this relation is explained in terms of fittability of the bulky hydrophobic group of drugs into the cyclodextrin's cavity. The free energy change for the complex formation between chlopromazine or valethamate and β-CyD is governed by the enthalpy term and not by the entropy term which controls the surfactant-β-CyD interactions.

Notes: Abstract Kinetochores and microtubules were visualized simultaneously during spindle formation at the first meiotic division in microsporocytes of Lilium longiflorum (2n = 24) under a confocal laser-scanning microscope, after immunofluorescence staining with centromere-recognizing antiserum and tubulin-specific antibody. During early prometaphase I, each kinetochore of bivalent chromosomes appeared to be an amorphous flat structure upon its initial attachment to microtubules. It became compact and spherical with the development of the spindle. From late prometaphase I, when the bipolar spindle was nearly complete, each kinetochore resembled a double disk that was suggestive of a pair of sister kinetochores and the homologous kinetochores were oriented towards opposite poles. Thus, the bipolar spindle at metaphase I included 12 bivalent chromosomes with a total of four kinetochores each. At anaphase I, the sister kinetochores moved to the same spindle pole as a paired unit. In microsporocytes arrested at prometaphase I by colchicine treatment, the sister kinetochores also came to be distinguishable. These results suggest that the change of kinetochore structure during meiosis I may be under chromosomal control but be somewhat associated with its attachment to spindle microtubules.

Notes: Abstract The phase transition from the tetragonal to the orthorhombic structure in La2−x Sr x CuO4+δ has been studied combining elastic and inelastic neutron scattering and specific heat measurements on the same well characterized crystals. This analysis focusses on the comparison between undoped and doped compounds. The proportionality between the orderparameter and the orthorhombic strain, predicted by the Landau theory, can be confirmed in La2−x Sr x CuO4+δ in a wide concentration and temperature range. We observe different values for the critical exponent β for doped superconducting and undoped insulating crystals. The temperature dependent study of the soft modes on a metallic superconducting crystal reveals an extremely large temperature range where this mode is strongly anharmonic. The comparison with previously published data shows that the frequencies of the soft modes at low temperatures decrease with doping, i.e. with increasing charge carrier concentration.

Notes: Abstract Si3N4 without sintering aids is studied with special interest to the fracture behaviour and its relation to microstructure. Cracks propagated almost transgranularly and no rising R-curve behaviour was found, because crack-wake region gave no contribution on toughening due to very high grain-boundary bonding strength. Microstructure with highly elongated grains was obtained by addition of 20%Si3N4 whisker, but fracture toughness was found to be similar to that of the monolithic Si3IM4 with equiaxed grains. It is recognized that fracture toughness is not determined simply by apparent microstructural parameters such as mean aspect ratio of grains when grain-boundary bonding is sufficiently strong. Detailed examination of microfracture behaviour is, therefore, necessary for the analysis of toughening in this kind of composites.

Notes: Abstract High purity Si3N4 powder was sintered with only 0.5–1.0 wt% AlN by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and its delayed failure behaviour at around 1400°C has been studied with interest to determine the role of Al atoms. Al atoms are found completely dissolved in the Si3N4 matrix as dilute sialon solid solutions by detailed analyses of phase composition. Flaw sensitivity increased considerably with the AlN addition, which was ascribed to the decrease in slow crack growth (SCG) resistance. Static-load lifetime under the same stress was remarkably decreased by the addition, which showed good agreement with that predicted from the experimentally obtained SCG resistance. Internal friction behaviour as well as microstructural investigation found no intergranular mechanisms for the SCG enhancement. Solution effect of Al and O atoms in the β-Si3N4 matrix and resulting virtual defect of covalent bonding was proposed to be their origin.

Notes: Abstract The paramagnetic (μ-O) state formed at the oxygen site in high Tc LaSrCuO was used to probe an interaction between the localized moment of the paramagnetic electron and the conduction electrons via zero field μ- spin relaxation. The enhanced relaxation rates consistently observed in the superconducting state of various Sr concentrations are explained as an effect of spin‐pairing in the high Tc supercurrent.

Notes: Abstract The positive muon spin relaxation method is applied to probe magnetic ordering in the superconducting phase of a high quality single crystal of La2−xSrxCuO4−σ (0.11≤x≤0.14). The well characterized crystal ofx=0.11 (T c=34.5 K) with nearly complete flux exclusion exhibits spin freezing at 8K(T f) with significant spin fluctuation up to 20 K. The onset of spin fluctuation andT f decrease against increasingx towardsx=0.15, suggesting an existence of a magnetic phase boundary aroundx whereT c becomes maximum.
