Notes: Examines some of the theoretical models of human decision makingderived from the field of psychology and considers some of the importantissues this raises for training in decision making. Discusses a smallselection of results from a fieldwork investigation, which examineshotel managers' cognitive decision-making processes. Ends with adiscussion of possible suggestions for training in decision making whichutilize psychological theories.

Notes: This study explores organizational culture by examining the relationship between total quality management (TQM) and culture, and specifically three elements of a culture related to quality improvement: customer focus, employee involvement, and continuous improvement. Process reengineering is used as an alternative management initiative. A survey of 220 mid-level professionals in 123 organizations was conducted to determine the extent to which there is a relation between the presence of these cultural elements, and the presence of TQM reengineering. The success of process improvement through either TQM or reengineering is used as a vehicle for examining the importance of these cultural elements. The importance of organizational culture and the implications for managers are discussed.

Notes: Presents a case study of work done in Mercury One 2 One on defining and using management competences. The reasons for taking this approach are explained, as is the way that the competences were defined to reflect and support company goals. Provides details on how the initiative was implemented and to what uses the data have been put. Draws out the benefits to the company.

Notes: Abstract Tin (IV) chloride reacts with sulfolane (S) to form a cis-octahedral adduct SnCl4·S2. Solutions of lithium chloride and tin (IV) chloride in sulfolane contain the complex ions SnCl 5 − and SnCl 6 2− at 1∶1 and 2∶1 mole ratios of constituents, respectively. The complexes are characterized by conductimetry and by Mössbauer, IR, and Raman spectroscopy.

Notes: Abstract This paper extends previous investigations of non-adiabatic, oscillatory motions in plane-parallel, gravitationally stratified, magnetized atmospheres by replacing the simple polytropic equilibrium atmosphere with the detailed umbral model atmosphere of Thomas and Scheuer (1982). A normal mode analysis is performed on three cavities defined within the vertical extent of the model. For this work, the coefficient of thermal conductivity is taken to be a function of the temperature and the constant magnetic field is aligned with the direction of gravity. This significantly alters the structure of the eigenspectrum from that of the simpler models using a constant coefficient of thermal conductivity. When evaluated with physical parameters relevant to sunspot umbrae, 5-min and several 3-min oscillations are detected in the cavity from the upper photosphere to the temperature minimum whereas only 3-min oscillations are found in the spatially larger cavity from the upper photosphere to the chromosphere/corona transition region.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the normal modes of subadiabatic and superadiabatic polytropic atmospheres with constant vertical magnetic field and constant thermal conductivity. In the subadiabatic case, we found the lowest, third and fifth modes were always damped, however overstability was detected in the second and fourth modes at low values of the background magnetic field. In the superadiabatic case, instability was detected in several modes, however the effect of the change from sub to superadiabatic had little effect on the frequencies of the modes. The introduction of a variety of boundary conditions varying the degree of thermal and mechanical isolation altered the decay rates of the modes from moderately damped with rigid boundary conditions toward zero decay with the less restrictive conditions, again with essentially no effect on the oscillation frequencies. In both types of atmosphere, modes with periods in the 3-min and 5-min bands were present with magnetic fields around 3000 G, whereas only the 5-min modes were present at 2000 G.

Notes: Abstract The role of glutathione (GSH) in myocardial antioxidant defense was investigated in Swiss-Webster mice either performing swim exercise to exhaustion or rested in both the GSH adequate (GSH-A) and GSH deficient (GSH-D) states. GSH deficiency was accomplished by injecting mice with L-buthionine [S,R]sulfoximine (BSO; 2 nmol/kg body wt, i.p.) and providing BSO (20 mM) in drinking water for 12 days. GSH and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) contents in the GSH-D hearts were decreased to 10 and 8%, respectively, of those in the GSH-A mice. This decrease was associated with a significant decline of the total glutathione level in the liver, skeletal muscle and plasma. Myocardial GSH peroxidase and GSH sulfur-transferase activities decreased significantly following GSH deficiency, whereas superoxide dismutase activity was significantly elevated. GSH deficiency did not affect exercise endurance performance. However, exhaustive exercise decreased GSH content in the myocardium of the GSH-A and GSH-D mice by 22 and 44% (p 〈 0.05), respectively. The GSH:GSSG ratio was not altered significantly following exercise because of a concomitant decrease in GSSG (p 〈 0.05). γ-Glutamyltranspeptidase activity was significantly increased after exercise, especially in the GSH-D hearts (72%; p 〈 0.05). GSH content after exercise correlated negatively with exercise time in both GSH-A and GSH-D mice (p 〈 0.05). These data indicate that GSH is actively used in the myocardium during prolonged exercise at moderate intensity and that GSH deficiency is tolerated by the heart, possibly compensated for by an increased GSH uptake from the plasma.

Notes: Abstract We consider the problem of prioritizing a collection of discrete pieces of information, or transactions. The goal is to rank the transactions in such a way that the user can best pursue a subset of the transactions in hopes of discovering those which were generated by an interesting source. The problem is shown to differ from traditional classification in several fundamental ways. Ranking algorithms are divided into classes, depending on the amount of information they may utilize. We demonstrate that while ranking by the least constrained algorithm class is consistent with classification, such is not the case for a more constrained class of algorithms. We demonstrate also that while optimal ranking by the former class is “easy”, optimal ranking by the latter class is NP-hard. Finally, we present detectors which solve optimally restricted versions of the ranking problem, including symmetric anomaly detection.
