    Fermi surface and extended van Hove singularity in the non-cuprate layered perovskite superconductor Sr2RuO4 (1996)

    Notes: Abstract With high-resolution (≈22 meV) angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the Fermi surface of the first copper free layered-perovskite superconductor, Sr2RuO4, was determined. We observed three bands to cross the Fermi energy in qualitative agreement with LDA band structure calculations; one electron-like surface encircling the $$\overline \Gamma$$ point in the projected Brillouin zone, and two hole-like surfaces around the $$\overline X$$ point. The most striking aspect of the measurements is the observation of an extended van Hove singularity. It is located 17 meV below the Fermi energy and extends around the $$\overline M$$ point for about 0.2 Å−1 along both the $$\overline \Gamma$$ — $$\overline M$$ — $$\overline \Gamma$$ and the $$\overline X$$ — $$\overline M$$ — $$\overline X$$ directions.These observations demonstrate that van Hove singularities near the Fermi surface are a more generic feature of layered oxides, and call for a clarification of their exact role in oxide superconductivity.

    Notes: A model for the phase distribution and evolution of the heterogeneous (suspension) polymerization of vinyl chloride is presented. Experimental information on pressure, temperature, and conversion has been obtained from a 34 liter bench reactor reproducing reaction conditions and product properties typical of industrial operation. A calculation procedure based on simple plant data is proposed for the description of the phase compositions and their evolution over the entire process. Results based on classical Flory-Huggins theory of solutions are presented and compared with existing data.

    Notes: A specific and sensitive method for the determination of ethylenediamine in human plasma is described. The aqueous sample is treated with m-toluoyl chloride, yielding the N,N′-bis(m-toluoyl) derivative of the diamine, which is extracted into dichloromethane and quantitated after “on column” methylation by capillary gas liquid chromatography with alkali flame ionization detection. The corresponding derivative of putrescine serves as internal standard. The assay is reproducible and calibration curves are linear over the concentration range 0.05 to 10 μg · ml-1. The lower detection limit is about 10 ng · ml-1. The structures of the compounds of interest eluting from the capillary column are examined by gas liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The assay has been applied to the analysis of ethylenediamine in plasma following the administration of aminophylline and ethylenediamine in a cross-over study to patients with bronchopulmonary diseases. The method also proves suitable for measuring other primary and secondary amines and diamines in aqueous solutions by gas liquid chromatography.

    Notes: The big success of the reaction injection molding (RIM) process has brought about a marked interest in reacting polymer processing. In the present work, we study the technical feasibility of a continuous process to coat metallic conductors using reacting polymers. In the envisioned system, RIM type reactants are mixed and then injected into a tubular reactor through the center of which we pass the cable to be coated. The predictions of the mathematical model developed show that a feasible process can be designed by adequate control of the heat transfer phenomena. The process needs in general, a low reactor temperature and a high cable temperature.

The thermal stability of mesophases of these compounds are in the order of the analogous ethylene-bridged liquid crystals. The reason for this result seems to be the combination of molecular rigidity and conformational flexibility.
