Notes: Explicit formulas have been found for the effective piezoelectric coefficients of a 0-3 composite of ferroelectric spherical particles in a ferroelectric matrix. Tensile loading and hydrostatic loading conditions were studied. Assuming that both phases are dielectrically and elastically isotropic, explicit expressions in simple closed form for the effective d33, d31 and dh coefficients were derived in terms of the constituents' piezoelectric coefficients and the dielectric and elastic properties of the composite and constituents. Prediction of the piezoelectric coefficients for specific composite systems was compared with experimental values from published works, and good agreement with data was obtained. Goodness of fit is not limited to low volume fraction of inclusions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Recent studies found that the (Pt/Co/Pt) trilayers can be used as a unit in combination with nonmagnetic or magnetic layer, X (X=Pd, Ag, Cu, and Ni), to enhance the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the films, reduce the Curie temperature, and alter the magneto-optical properties. The effects of intercalating Cr into Pd/Co multilayers on the magnetic and magneto-optical properties are studied in this article. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy Ku and the coercivity Hc of the system decrease rapidly with increasing the Cr thickness (XCr) up to 0.4 nm, and change slightly when Cr thickness further increases. The dependence of the coercivity Hc on the Cr thickness, which obeys the law: Hc (XCr)=XCr−2.66, indicates that the magnetization reversal is controlled by domain wall moving, mainly due to the interface roughness. Large decrease of the Kerr rotation θk of the Pd/Cr/Co multilayers compared with pure Pd/Co multilayers is also found in the wavelength ranging from 200 to 800 nm. As it is well known, the large anisotropy and Kerr rotation in Pd/Co system are mainly caused by the polarization of Pd atoms due to nearby Co atoms. As the intercalating of Cr layer between Pd and Co layer, the average polarization of Pd atoms will be reduced largely. As a matter of fact, the Cr atoms can also be polarized by nearby Co atoms, which, however, seems to take a minor effect on the anisotropy and Kerr rotation of the system. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We measure linear optical dispersion, nonlinear refraction and two-photon absorption in a silicon waveguide at 1.54 μm wavelength. The total dispersion in the silicon waveguide was found to be −9.1 fs/(nm cm). At 1.54 μm wavelength, the two-photon absorption coefficient was found to be 0.45 cm/GW and a π phase shift from self-phase modulation was observed in optical pulses of 60 W peak-coupled power, generated from an amplified gain-switched laser diode. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two series of feeding experiments were conducted to study the feasibility of using decapsulated Artemia cysts for direct feeding to ornamental fish. The first series evaluated the dietary values of the dried and the brine decapsulated Artemia cysts against two conventional live feeds, Artemia nauplii and Moina for adults and fry of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata Peters. In the second series, brine cysts were used for feeding to fry of four other important ornamental fish species, viz. platy, Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther), swordtail, X. helleri (Heckel), molly, P. sphenops Cuvier & Valenciennes and black neon tetra, Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi Géry, and the results were compared with those fed Moina. Evaluation of the performance of the fish fed the various diets was based on stress resistance, growth and survival of the fish. Our findings indicated that decapsulated cysts could be used as a substitute for Artemia nauplii or Moina in freshwater ornamental fish culture. Apart from being a hygienic off-the-shelf feed, the direct use of the cysts also signifies a new area of application for low-hatch cysts in the ornamental fish industry, with concomitant saving in feed costs.

Notes: A sex-associated amplified fragment length polymorphism and a strain-specific random amplified polymorphic DNA marker were identified from Asian arowana (dragonfish; Scleropages formosus Müller & Schlegel) by screening pooled genomic DNA samples from three different strains as well as males and females respectively. Both markers were cloned, sequenced and successfully converted into sequence-tagged-site (STS) markers. The strain-specific STS marker could be applied to differentiate the Indonesian golden strain of Asian arowana from the green and blood-red strains before the stage when colours become identifiable. Individuals from the green strain could be sexed with an efficiency of 82.7% using the sex-associated STS marker. Thus, populations with preferred sex ratios can be formed without the need of rearing a large number of fish.

Notes: Abstract. Let G be a multigraph, g and f be integer-valued functions defined on V(G). Then a graph G is called a (g, f)-graph if g(x)≤deg G(x)≤f(x) for each x∈V(G), and a (g, f)-factor is a spanning (g, f)-subgraph. If the edges of graph G can be decomposed into (g, f)-factors, then we say that G is (g, f)-factorable. In this paper, we obtained some sufficient conditions for a graph to be (g, f)-factorable. One of them is the following: Let m be a positive integer, l be an integer with l=m (mod 4) and 0≤l≤3. If G is an -graph, then G is (g, f)-factorable. Our results imply several previous (g, f)-factorization results.

Notes: Abstract The functional role of the basal forebrain and preoptic regions in modulating the normally regular electric organ discharge was determined by focal brain stimulation in the weakly electric fish, Eigenmannia. The rostral preoptic area, which is connected with the diencephalic prepacemaker nucleus, was examined physiologically by electrical stimulation in a curarized fish. Electrical stimulation of the most rostral region of the preoptic area with trains of relatively low intensity current elicits discrete bursts of electric organ discharge interruptions in contrast to other forebrain loci. These responses were observed primarily as after-responses following the termination of the stimulus train and were relatively immune to variations in the stimulus parameters. As the duration and rate of these preoptic-evoked bursts of electric organ discharge interruptions (approximately 100 ms at 2 per s) are similar to duration and rate of natural interruptions, it is proposed that these bursts might be precursors to natural interruptions. These data suggest that the preoptic area, consistent with its role in controlling reproductive behaviors in vertebrates, may be influencing the occurrence of electric organ discharge courtship signals by either direct actions on the prepacemaker nucleus or through other regions that are connected with the diencephalic prepacemaker nucleus.
