    Notizen: Deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) was used to obtain the energy level and the capture characteristics of InAs self-assembled quantum dots embedded in GaAs. A specially designed structure was used for the DLTS measurement for enhanced resolution. This structure allows us to detect capacitance relaxation signal from a single layer of quantum dots and to separate this signal from those of the DX centers inside the structure. The DLTS spectra with different filling pulses and different rate windows provide clear information on the energy level and the capture characteristics of the quantum dots. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Hole Schottky barrier heights on GaAs have been studied experimentally by using a conventional metal–semiconductor–metal photodetector (MSMPD) structure. The Schottky barrier height for holes was obtained directly by the hole-current dominated dark current measurement of the MSMPD. With a thin, highly doped surface layer, control of the Schottky barrier heights for holes from 0.48 to 0.79 eV was obtained. By using these engineered Schottky contacts in the MSMPDs, over three orders of magnitude reduction in the dark currents of the MSMPDs was achieved. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We propose an analytic study of the polaron spectrum in self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots. The approach is based on the first-order degenerate perturbation theory and, therefore, it allows us to describe the one-phonon processes.     Notizen: Photoluminescence (PL) from mesoporous silica (MS) with the pore size of ∼6 nm and the thickness of walls among pores of ∼1 nm has been studied at room temperature. The heat pretreatment of MS in air at different temperatures and the variation of the excitation wavelengths allow one to shift the PL peak through the whole visible spectral range. The PL is suggested to originate from nonbridging oxygens (red bands), hydrogen-related species (green bands), and water-carbonyl groups (blue bands). The spectroscopic properties of MS are found to be similar to those of surface-oxidized silicon nanocrystals and porous silicon. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: It has been found that atomic force microscope (AFM) induced local oxidation is an effective way for converting thin (〈5 nm) Si3N4 films to SiOx. The threshold voltage for the 4.2 nm film is as low as 5 V and the initial growth rate is on the order of 103 nm/s at 10 V. Micro-Auger analysis of the selectively oxidized region revealed the formation of SiOx. Due to the large chemical selectivity in various etchants and great thermal oxidation rate difference between Si3N4, SiO2, and Si, AFM patterning of Si3N4 films can be a promising method for fabricating nanoscale structures. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A method to achieve ordering and selective positioning of single InAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) has been developed. The selective growth was achieved by manipulating the strain distribution on the sample surface. The QDs are formed on predesigned mesas with added strain. Single dots were obtained on small mesas. Using this technique, two-dimensional single QD arrays have been achieved. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: : The effects of erythritol on physical and sensory characteristics of chiffon cakes were studied. The results showed that chiffon cakes prepared with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% replacement of sucrose with erythritol were lighter in crust and crumb and less sweet in crumbs than those with sucrose. There were no differences in the specific gravity of cake batter, volume, and moisture content between cakes prepared with sucrose or erythritol. Results from sensory evaluation also showed no significant differences in crumb color, moistness, and tenderness for any cakes.

    Notizen: Whey protein concentrates with ˜80% protein (WPC-80) plasticized with 0.64 M glycerol or sucrose, or with 0.34 or 0.64 M sorbitol or polyethylene glycol (PEG) 200, produced flexible films. WPC-80 with hydrolyzed lactose required addition of less sucrose to produce flexible films. WPC-80 films formed as coatings on paperboard gave a grease barrier comparable to WPI film-coatings. Long-term ambient storage of WPC-80 coated paperboard indicated that the use of sucrose as plasticizer imparted good grease resistance and minimized plasticizer migration.

    Notizen: The reaction of ground state carbon atoms, C(3Pj), with dimethylacetylene, H3CCCCH3, was studied at three collision energies between 21.2 and 36.9 kJmol−1 employing the crossed molecular beam approach. Our experiments were combined with ab initio and RRKM calculations. It is found that the reaction is barrierless via a loose, early transition state located at the centrifugal barrier following indirect scattering dynamics through a complex. C(3Pj) attacks the π system of the dimethylacetylene molecule to form a dimethylcyclopropenylidene intermediate either in one step via an addition to C1 and C2 of the acetylenic bond or through an addition to only one carbon atom to give a short-lived cis/trans dimethylpropenediylidene intermediates followed by ring closure. The cyclic intermediate ring opens to a linear dimethylpropargylene radical which rotates almost parallel to the total angular momentum vector J. This complex fragments to atomic hydrogen and a linear 1-methylbutatrienyl radical, H2CCCCCH3(X2A″), via a tight exit transition state located about 18 kJmol−1 above the separated products. The experimentally determined exothermicity of 190±25 kJmol−1 is in strong agreement with our calculated data of 180±10 kJmol−1. The explicit verification of the carbon versus hydrogen exchange pathway together with the first identification of the H2CCCCCH3 radical represents a third pathway to form chain C5H5 radicals in the reactions of C(3Pj) with C4H6 isomers under single collision conditions. Previous experiments of atomic carbon with the 1,3-butadiene isomer verified the formation of 1- and 3-vinylpropargyl radicals, HCCCHC2H3(X2A″), and H2CCCC2H3(X2A″), respectively. In high-density environments such as combustion flames and circumstellar envelopes of carbon stars, these linear isomers can undergo collision-induced ring closure(s) and/or H atom migration(s) which can lead to the cyclopentadienyl radical. The latter is thought to be a crucial reactive intermediate in soot formation and possibly in the production of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules in outflow of carbon stars. Likewise, a H atom catalyzed isomerization can interconvert the 3-vinylpropargyl and the 1-methylbutatrienyl radical. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The photodissociation of CH2(Double Bond)CClF at 193 nm has been studied by product translational spectroscopy. A total of five primary dissociation channels was detected for the products of Cl (fast), HCl, HF, Cl (slow), and F in the decreasing order of relative yield. Product translational energy distributions have been measured for these reaction products. While a thermal-like distribution was detected for the slow Cl and F atoms, a nonthermal distribution was determined for the fast Cl atom and the molecular elimination of HCl and HF. Apart from the fast Cl atom with anisotropy parameter β=0.5, the remaining products recoil isotropically following photolysis with linearly polarized light. By analogy with the photodissociation of chloroethylenes, these products are found to originate from two potential energy surfaces. In addition to the primary dissociation channels, we have detected the secondary products of F+C2H2 from the internally excited α-fluorovinyl radical through a fast fragment isomerization. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
