Notes: Resonance saturation (RS), subsidiary absorption (SA), and parallel pump (PP) spin wave instability threshold measurements have been made on single crystal easy plane disks of Mn substituted Zn–Y type hexagonal ferrite materials at 8.93 GHz and room temperature. For each configuration, "butterfly curves" of the spin wave instability threshold microwave field amplitude hcrit as a function of the static field applied in the disk plane were obtained. The previous theory for these instability processes was also extended to include planar magnetocrystalline anisotropy and a wave vector k dependent spin wave linewidth, ΔHk. The RS butterfly curve had a characteristic "V" shape with a rounded minimum at the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) field. The nominal ΔHk needed to fit the data at the ferromagnetic resonance field was 7 Oe, but the butterfly curve shape indicated a k-dependent ΔHk. The butterfly curves for the PP configuration were flat at low field and then diverged rapidly at the cutoff field for first order instability processes, Hcut. The SA butterfly curves were also flat over the field interval for first order processes, but then decreased as the field was increased above Hcut. This decrease is attributed to the onset of second order processes due to the proximity of the FMR and additional magnetostatic mode peaks as one moves to and then above Hcut. The flat portions of the PP and SA butterfly curves could be fitted with a single k-independent ΔHk value of 18 Oe. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new type of incidence-angle-variable infrared spectroscopic ellipsometer working in the 2100–10 000 wave number range has been designed and constructed. For the system, the analyzer and polarizer were driven by two microstepping motors having hollow shafts and rotating synchronously with a speed ratio of 2:1, i.e., A=2P. The incidence angle can be varied from 30° to 90° with an accuracy of 0.01°. The doubled Fourier transforms as both functions of the wave number and the azimuthal angles of the polarizer and analyzer were carried out and integrated in the system. Two sets of ellipsometric parameters measured in the experiment have been used to test the data self-consistency of the system. In data reduction, the error arising from the slight anisotropy of the stray light was corrected. In application, the complex dielectric function of the Au film was measured with a data accuracy better that 1% in the entire spectral range. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : This work begins by defining rational water use, and then discusses important factors that most strongly influence it. A general model is then developed to enable factories to quantify the ratio of rational industrial water reuse based on the least cost method. The model is established to minimize the cost of water with reference to gross water use and three subsystems - the intake, reuse, and discharge of industrial water. Discharge cost is determined using data from a 1997 survey of 38 factories, and reuse costs are ranked and expressed by a step function. The model is verified using data from a typical semiconductor factory in northern Taiwan's Hsinchu Science Based Industrial Park, whose effective rational water reuse ratio is about 38 percent. A sensitivity analysis shows that improving water reuse technology is the most important factor in determining the rational water reuse ratio, and the price of water is the second most important. When water costs over NT$30 (New Taiwan Dollar, US$1 = NT$34) per cubic meter, increasing reuse becomes significant. The model provides a step towards the scientific management of industrial water.

Notes: Manufacturing firms are always faced with the problem of promoting operational performance and labor-force management. The utilization of human resources is closely correlated with operations and production performance. This study investigates the correlation between human resource management (HRM) and business performance of large-scale manufacturing firms in Taiwan. First, 16 subjects of HRM are designed to survey the importance level and achievement level of HRM by the sample firms. Productivity indices are also defined to measure business performance. Based on the survey, four critical HRM factors including 12 subjects are extracted by factor analysis. The difference between importance level and achievement level of subjects contained in each factor is examined. Furthermore, considering importance and achievement levels of HRM as features, fuzzy clustering analysis is employed to categorize the firms into four patterns. With various HRM characteristics, each pattern has different business performance in terms of productivity. Using a pattern approach, these findings can aid the firms in each pattern to improve their productivity by improving their HRM strategies.

Notes: Quality cost is usually considered as a means to measure the quality level in a quality system. Since the interrelationship among quality cost components is complex, a general quantitative model for describing their relationship is not easy to construct for improving the quality. In the assessments of quality cost, some hidden quality costs, such as the goodwill loss due to lost customers' reliability, are often neglected in the existing analysis methods. This may lead to reaching a sub-optimal decision. In addition, the assessments of quantitative quality cost items are usually approximated, and therefore are imprecise in nature. Based on these considerations, we propose fuzzy approaches to evaluate quality improvement alternatives because of its fuzzy nature. An evidence fusion technique, namely Choquet fuzzy integral, is employed to aggregate the quality cost information. A composite index is determined to find the best quality improvement alternative. Finally, a numerical example is used to demonstrate the applicability of the approach.

Notes: Proposes an approach to improving production management (PM) of a firm through examining its resource utilization and product competence. To understand the status of PM in Taiwan, evaluates the achievement levels of 14 production management subjects from 50 large-scale manufacturing firms. The subjects are further classified into four planning ranges of PM. Then productivity measures of these firms for resource utilization and product competence are determined. Two groups of patterns with distinct PM characteristics are found through a fuzzy clustering analysis based on resource utilization and product competence. Significant correlation has been found between resource utilization and product competence and PM. The PM patterns with good performance in terms of resource utilization and product competence are considered targets for firms of other patterns. The ways of adjusting PM for these firms of other patterns are then described in terms of the characteristics of the target patterns.

Notes: Since a firm's management performance can be evaluated in terms of financial ratios, efficient management using financial factors is proposed as the key element for upgrading a firm's productivity. Investigates productivity in terms of certain financial factors of large-scale manufacturing firms in Taiwan. First determines several influential financial factors using factor analysis. Based on these factors, employs fuzzy clustering approaches to categorize the manufacturing firms into several patterns with distinct characteristics of financial factors. Using the characteristics of productivity and financial factors for each pattern, makes two kinds of analysis, and proposes some suggestions to improve the firms' productivity.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents the design and implementation of a low power 8 × 8 2-D DCT chip based on a computation-effective algorithm. Computational complexity can be reduced by simplifying the direct 2-D algorithm. Thus, the low power consumption is achieved due to complexity reduction. Besides, the parallel distributed-arithmetic (DA) technique is used to realize constant multiplication due to the low-power consideration. Additionally, the 2 V-power supply is practiced in circuit implementation for now and future battery operated applications. By using the TSMC 0.6 μm single-poly double-metal technology, 133 mW power consumption at 100 MHz and the 133 MHz maximum operation speed are achieved by critical path simulation.
