Notizen: The nucleation sites of calcium phosphate crystals during collagen mineralization were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy. It was found for the first time that there is another nucleation site, i.e., carbonyl (〉C=O) on collagen, besides the previous reported nucleation site of carboxyl (–COOH). By comparing the IR spectra of collagen not only with collagen/calcium phosphate but also with collagen/Ca2+, it was observed that the peak intensities of amides I, II, and III of collagen decreased significantly after mineralization. The decrease of the amide I peak intensity was mainly due to blockage of the C=O stretch. Furthermore, the peak for amide I gradually shifted to a lower wavenumber during collagen mineralization. This shift indicated that chemical interaction between carboxyl groups and Ca2+ ions formed in the mineralization.

Notizen: The powder characteristics of two types of Si3N4 (referred to as FD1 and FD2), as well as the rheological properties of their aqueous suspensions, were studied in this paper. There are distinctive differences in size distribution, soluble counterions, and surface groups. Highly concentrated aqueous slurries could not be prepared from these two as-received powders. Acid cleaning and calcination improved the solids loading of their aqueous slurries, but the improvement varied with the powder. For the as-received FD1 powder, poor dispersibility was caused by high-valence counterions, which can be eliminated through acid-cleaning. However, for the as-received FD2 powder, it was the surface group of amine structures and carbon-hydrogen bonding that limited the dispersibility. The calcination of FD2 can remove the amine structure and carbon-hydrogen bonding and improve the slurry's rheological properties almost perfectly. For acid-cleaned and calcined FD1, and calcined FD2, the solids loading of their aqueous suspensions reached 50 vol% with a viscosity below 300 mPa·s.

Notizen: The dielectric properties of (Ba0.6Sr0.4)TiO3 and Al2O3-doped (Ba0.6Sr0.4)TiO3 have been characterized. The grain size of the specimen is maximum for (Ba0.6Sr0.4)TiO3 that has been doped with 1 wt% Al2O3. The density and the real part of the relative dielectric constant each decrease as the Al2O3 content increases. The loss factor is minimum for (Ba0.6Sr0.4)TiO3 that has been doped with 2 wt% Al2O3. The dielectric constant of the specimens decreases as the applied dc field increases. The influence of the dc field on the loss factor is much less than that on the dielectric constant. The tunability is ∼24% for (Ba0.6Sr0.4)TiO3 that has been doped with 1 wt% Al2O3.

Notizen: The paper analyzes a model of strategic trade policies in the presence of international cross-ownership of firms that are heterogenous both in terms of costs and in terms of extent of foreign ownership. The equilibrium pattern of taxes and subsidies is characterized for any arbitrary cross-ownership profile, and any number of heterogenous firms. The equilibrium subsidy (or tax) given to any firm is shown to depend, in a separable manner, on the firm’s characteristics and on the covariance of the distribution of cost and foreign ownership across firms. A neutrality theorem is proved concerning the Nash equilibrium of the game between governments: in equilibrium, the pattern of trade, the value of each firm, and world welfare are independent of the ownership pattern.

Notizen: The authors examine the role of strategic interactions among a small number of financial intermediaries who know that the current financial regime is subject to change. The current financial regime offers protection to the intermediaries against bad outcomes. Each financial intermediary’s investment strategy is shown to depend on its rivals’ strategies. It is shown that a small shock that causes an initially small deviation from an intermediary’s equilibrium strategy can lead to a series of larger deviations by its rivals, thereby precipitating a change of financial regime.

Notizen: Abstract The phase-field method has recently emerged as a powerful computational approach to modeling and predicting mesoscale morphological and microstructure evolution in materials. It describes a microstructure using a set of conserved and nonconserved field variables that are continuous across the interfacial regions. The temporal and spatial evolution of the field variables is governed by the Cahn-Hilliard nonlinear diffusion equation and the Allen-Cahn relaxation equation. With the fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic information as the input, the phase-field method is able to predict the evolution of arbitrary morphologies and complex microstructures without explicitly tracking the positions of interfaces. This paper briefly reviews the recent advances in developing phase-field models for various materials processes including solidification, solid-state structural phase transformations, grain growth and coarsening, domain evolution in thin films, pattern formation on surfaces, dislocation microstructures, crack propagation, and electromigration.

Notizen: Abstract. Based on recently developed methods of exploratory spatial data analysis, this article seeks to prove the desired spread effects in the Chinese space economy from a core-periphery perspective. Recently developed methods of exploratory spatial data analysis provide new insights on the spatial pattern of the interaction of Chinese provincial output growth rates over the 1978–1994 period. Findings indicate that the economic spillover effects are most evident at the first order of province contiguity from Guangdong, where the two coastal provinces of Hainan and Guangxi are identified with a significant spread pattern, while non-coastal provinces Hunan and Jiangxi are observed with a strong polarization pattern. A further analysis indicates that the state preferential policies favoring the coastal region are the fundamental force in determining the direction of spread-polarization processes in the Chinese space economy. This finding confirms Friedmann's hypothesis on spatial interaction, namely, that the spread process is a successful diffusion of the core's existing institutions into the periphery.

Notizen: What does it take for an executive to manage effectively in the new economy? While the explosion of Internet-centered business has produced an unrelenting focus on e-commerce strategies, new business models, and processes, surprisingly little attention has been paid to how e-business is changing the competencies needed to manage effectively in this new business environment. The authors describe the findings of research by the Accenture Institute for Strategic Change to discover the unique competencies that managers need to excel in the new economy. While some management competencies have changed little, research shows that e-managers need to develop new or stronger competencies in six key areas: fast decision making; partnering; knowing the technology; staying focused in spite of information overload; making sense of the future; and attracting and retaining talent.

Notizen: The influences of viscous shear stresses on the squeezing film behaviors in porous journal bearings with infinite length are analyzed. Based on the Brinkman model, two general coupled Reynolds-type equations derived between two curved surfaces are applied to evaluate the bearing characteristics. According to the results obtained, the Brinkman model predicts quite different squeezing film performances to those obtained by using the slip-flow model and the Darcy model. In addition, the quantitative effects of viscous shear stresses of the Brinkman model upon the porous squeezing film characteristics are more pronounced for porous journal bearings with moderate permeability parameters and higher eccentricity ratios.
