    Notes:   Clusters now form a central element in many regional economic development policies. Location within a cluster of related industries is thought to increase a firm's competitive advantage resulting in higher output and productivity growth rates than in similar firms located beyond the cluster. This study focuses on owner-managers operating small firms within a traditional cluster of metalworking industries and empirically examines the relationship between growth-orientation and the extent and nature of cluster embeddedness. The results indicate only a limited number of differences in growth-orientation given variations in levels of cluster embeddedness. Contrary to conventional wisdom, many of the most growth-oriented entrepreneurs focus their activities outside the cluster, especially in terms of market-based linkages. However, those firms with more advanced process technologies do tend to show above average within cluster linkages.

    Notes: Abstract Acacia suaveolens (Sm.) Willd is a perennial shrub that forms even-aged stands, recruited from a soil seed-bank following fire. It has previously been subject to demographic studies, which used a space-for-time substitution to investigate temporal patterns following fire. In the present study the potential for spatial variation across sites was investigated by sampling at several similarly aged populations in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, northern Sydney, Australia. Significant variation in mean size and fecundity of A. suaveolens individuals was observed among sites, over a 2-4.6-fold range in plant size, and a sevenfold range in mean fecundity. The observed variation at 3 years after fire encapsulated most of the variation previously observed among sites 0-17 years since fire, emphasizing the importance of spatial variation in this species. For each site a two-stage (seed, plant) matrix model was constructed, and projected from 3 to 25 years following fire. Population growth was measured as number of seeds per 3-year-old plant, and found to vary 1.4-fold across models for different sites. This site-to-site variation, as well as that in size, fecundity and survival, was statistically significant. Variation in projected seeds per plant could mostly be attributed to differences in fecundity rather than plant survival. Sensitivity analyses emphasized the biological significance of the variation in fecundity. Whereas previous studies have focused on temporal variation, this work demonstrates the importance of extending our understanding of a species to include the spatial component of population dynamics.

    Notes: When groups of diploid (mean ± s.e. fork length, LF) 33·0 ± 1·4 cm and triploid (35·3 ± 0·5 cm) Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were forced to swim at controlled speeds in a carefully monitored 10 m diameter ‘annular’ tank no significant difference was found between the maximum sustained swimming speeds (Ums, maintainable for 200 min) where the fish swam at the limit of their aerobic capability. Diploids achieved 2·99 body lengths per second (bl s−1)(0·96 m s−1) and triploids sustained 2·91 bl s−1(1·02 m s−1). The selection of fish for the trials was based on their ability to swim with a moving pattern projected from a gantry rotating at the radius of the tank and the selection procedure did not prove to be significant by ploidy. A significant difference was found between the anaerobic capabilities of the fish measured as endurance times at their prolonged swimming speeds. During the course of the experimentation the voluntary swimming speed selected by the fish increased and the schooling behaviour improved. The effect of the curvature of the tank on the fish speeds was calculated (removing the curved effect of the tank increased the speed in either ploidy by 5·5%). Implications of the endurance times and speeds are discussed with reference to the aquaculture of triploid Atlantic salmon.

    Notes: The bacterial transposon Tn10 inserts preferentially into specific target sequences. This insertion specificity appears to be linked to the ability of target sites to adopt symmetrically positioned DNA bends after binding the transposition machinery. Target DNA bending is thought to permit the transposase protein to make additional contacts with the target DNA, thereby stabilizing the target complex so that the joining of transposon and target DNA sequences can occur efficiently. In the current work, we have asked whether the introduction of a discontinuity in a target DNA strand, a modification that is expected to make it easier for a DNA molecule to bend, can enhance or rescue target capture under otherwise suboptimal reaction conditions. We show that either a nick or a missing phosphate specifically at the site of reaction chemistry increases the ability of various target DNAs to form the target capture complex. The result suggests that the bends in the target DNA are highly localized and include the scissile phosphates. This raises the possibility that strand transfer is mechanistically linked to target capture. We have also identified specific residues in the target DNA and in transposase that appear to play an important role in target DNA bending.

    Notes: Abstract  Many populations of herbaceous perennial plants contain seeds stored in a soil seed bank. The contribution of seeds to population persistence is an important parameter in population models but germination rates of known-age seeds are difficult to obtain because individual seeds cannot easily be followed. Although Trachymene incisa Rudge plants produce copious seeds that are dispersed into the soil, the existence of a seed bank has not been confirmed. To quantify the potential for a seed bank fresh seeds of T. incisa were sown into experimental seed banks in the eucalypt-dominated Agnes Banks Woodland in western Sydney, NSW. A recent fire provided the opportunity to compare germination in the burnt and unburnt vegetation. Density of seed sowing and time of maturation/dispersal of seeds were manipulated in 75 seed cages. Emergence of seeds after 5 months was significantly higher for the earliest planting date but after 1 year, germination of seeds planted in the later weeks increased, and the final germination for all weeks was 28%. Density of sowing and the recent fire did not affect emergence. A second experiment planted over a broader time span (9 weeks instead of 3 weeks) confirmed the effect of planting date but also found significant spatial variation on a scale of tens of metres. Laboratory germination rates of over 70% confirmed that the seeds were viable and non-dormant when sown in the field cages. The carry-over of non-germinated seed in the soil seed bank is estimated to be about 70% after 2 years, implying that a cohort of seeds would not be depleted through germination alone for up to 40 years. The potential for a long-lived seed bank in this species is interesting because the plants are also capable of resprouting from their rootstock after fire, giving them characteristics of both resprouters and seeders.
