Notizen: Abstract The physical aging process of 4-4′-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) cured diglycidyl ether bisphenol-A (DGEBA) blended with various molecular weights of poly(ether sulfone) (PES; Mn = 28,600, 10,600, and 6,137) was studied by DSC. For DGEBA/DDS system blended with a low MW PES-3 (Mn = 6,137), no phase separation of the polymer blend and only one enthalpic relaxation process due to physical aging was observed. Since the high MW PES-1 (Mn = 28,600) had a Tg close to that of fully cured DGEBA/DDS, the fully cured DGEBA/DDS/PES-1 blend had a broader glass transition than a neat DGEBA/DDS system. However, the DSC results showed two enthalpic relaxation processes due to the physical aging of PES-rich and cured epoxy-rich phases as the material was aged at 155 °C (30 °C below Tg). Since the Tgs of PES-1-rich and epoxy-rich phases overlapped with each other, the enthalpic relaxation processes corresponding to each phase coupled to each other in the earlier stage of physical aging. The medium MW PES-2 (Mn = 10,600) has a much lower Tg than that of fully cured DGEBA/DDS, two well separated Tgs were observed for the cured DGEBA/DDS/PES-2 blend, indicating the cured epoxy was immiscible with PES. Aging the polymer blend at 155 °C (24 °C below Tg1 of the PES-2-rich phase and 53 °C below Tg2 of the epoxy-rich phase) produced two well separated relaxation processes due to PES-2-rich and epoxy-rich phases. The experimental results suggested that aging the polymer blend at a suitable temperature would improve the phase separation between PES-1-rich and epoxy-rich phases.

Notizen: Summary Rats with either electrolytic or chemical (6-hydroxydopamine) lesions in the substantia nigra displayed decreased metabolism and hypothermia when they were exposed to cold (8 °C Ta), although they showed no deficiency in thermoregulation at both moderate (22 °C) and hot (30 °C) environmental temperatures.

Notizen: Abstract. A dual-wavelength continuous wave (cw) diode-end-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser that generates simultaneous laser action at the wavelengths 1064 nm and 1342 nm is demonstrated. The optimum oscillation condition for the simultaneous dual-wavelength operation in a diode-end-pumped solid-state laser has been derived. The relationship between the laser cavity and the output stability is also studied. Experimental results show that the stability of the output power at the two wavelengths could be enhanced by use of a three-mirror cavity.

Notizen: Summary  This paper presents an M-integral analysis for the microcracked anisotropic composite materials. By using an elementary solution derived for a single finite crack subjected to a concentrated force on crack faces, the problem of strong interacting, arbitrarily oriented and located microcracks in an anisotropic composite materials is reduced to a system of Fredholm integral equations. The crack-tip fracture parameters, such as the stress intensity factors, are evaluated from a numerical solution of the system of integral equations. Its dependence on the coordinate system, calculation, and physical interpretation of the M-integral are discussed in the interaction problem. Finally, a numerical example of the damage evaluation by the M-integral analysis is given.

Notizen: Abstract  Although soil solarization is used to control soil-borne pests, it also results in increased growth response (IGR) of plants, beyond the effect of pest control. IGR is attributed to various abiotic factors (e.g. increased mineral nutrient concentrations) and biotic factors. In this work, we studied the role played by dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil extracts in the IGR. DOM concentrations were about twice as high in solarized soil than in untreated soil. In two out of three soils, solarization appeared to increase amino acid synthesis, indicating that it had a favorable effect on microbial activity. Elemental composition, carbohydrate levels, E4 : E6 ratios and FTIR spectra did not differentiate between DOM extracted from solarized soils and DOM extracted from untreated soils. Growth of corn plants increased with increasing concentrations of DOM. Addition to the soil of DOM extracted from leonardite increased populations of fluorescent pseudomonads, known as beneficial bacteria, and reduced fungal populations. We conclude that the increase in DOM concentration following soil solarization is a potentially positive plant-growth-enhancement factor.

Notizen: Based on the concept of software reuse, this paper discusses the feasibility and necessity of developing CNC software IC (SIC) chips and proposes a methodology for building new CNC systems using multiple SIC chips. A SIC chip is an integrated program to execute certain functions in CNC systems. Different SIC chips can be integrated to build a new CNC system for special system requirements. In this paper, the interactive information among different SIC chips is analysed, and related specifications for information exchange are suggested. In addition, a procedure for developing a SIC chip for NC code interpretation is described and its role in building a CNC system is discussed. Lastly, an integrated development platform is presented for building an open CNC system with SIC chips.

Notizen: Abstract High-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) methods were developed for the determination of glycyrrhizin in radix Glycyrrhizae and ginsenosides Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf and Rg1 in radix Notoginseng. These methods were used as reference methods for near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Spectroscopic calibrations were developed for the determination of glycyrrhizin, the total content of ginsenosides and the individual major ginsenosides Rb1, Rd, Re and Rg1. Standard errors of cross validation (SECV) were 1.22 mg g–1 for glycyrrhizin (concentration range 21.3–34.1 mg g–1) and 0.99 mg g–1 for the sum of ginsenosides (concentration range 55.3–¶71.1 mg g–1). The corresponding coefficients of determination (R2) were 0.94 and 0.98, respectively. The SECVs were generally less than a factor of 2.5 of the repeatability standard deviation of the HPLC methods.

Notizen: Abstract Protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase (EC 1.13.11.3) has been purified 42-fold from 4-hydroxybenzoate-grown cells of Rhizobium trifolii TA1, where it constitutes about 2% of the cell protein. The dioxygenase has a molecular weight of 220,000, with two dissimilar sub-units of molecular weights 29,000 and 26,500, corresponding to an α4β4 composition. The enzyme is specific for protocatechuate, with a Km of 1.75×10-5 M and maximum activity at pH 9.2. Metal removal and replacement studies indicate that the enzyme contains complexed Fe3+ which is required for activity. Direct atomic absorption analysis gave 1.3–1.5 g atoms Fe3+ per mole of isolated enzyme, but correction for metal-deficient proteins suggests that the value is close to 2.
