Notes: Beta particles emitted by radioactive nuclei have a finite depth of penetration in a given medium and hence a certain linear energy transfer value depending upon their initial energy. This property can be utilized to achieve different rates of radiation induced reactions. Various diameter capillaries containing saline solutions of acrylamide and radioactive phosphorus-32 were used in the experiment and the change in viscosity of acrylamide solution was used as an indicator of the amount of energy transferred. Distinctly different rates were observed which were roughly proportional to the diameters of the capillaries containing the solutions. It also appears that irradiation of the polymer solution at 80°C even in the absence of oxygen has an adverse effect on the viscosity. The experimental conditions were chosen to approximate those existing in oil reservoirs.

Notes: The synthesis of new nitrido(phthalocyaninato)molybdenum (1-4) and -tungsten complexes (5-7) starting from the corresponding phthalonitriles and MNCl3 (M = Mo, W) is reported. In addition, the reaction of (tBu4Pc)WN (6) with PPh3 leading, after several steps, to the diamagnetic compound (tBu4Pc)WO (7) is described. The reaction of (tBu4Pc)ReN (9) with PPh3 leads to [(tBu4Pc)ReO]2 (12), and of [(C5H11)8Pc]ReN (10) with PPh3 leads, under different conditions, to {[(C5H11)8Pc]ReO}2O (11).

Notes: The effect of zinc diisopropyl dithiophosphate (ZnDTP) chelate over the range of 0.1 to 1.0 wt.% on the photostabilized degradation of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) films was examined. The degradation of the polymer was remarkably affected by the concentration of the ZnDTP which acted as photostabilizer at all concentrations.

Description / Table of Contents: Telechelic butadiene oligomers were prepared by bulk polymerization with nitril- and xanthogenate terminal groups and average molecular weight 〈 5000 g/mol. 2.2'-Azo-bis-iso-butyronitril (AIBN) and xanthogenate disulfides being used as initiator and chain transfer agents, respectively. The average molecular weight and the nitril functionalities of the oligomers were decreased and the xanthogenate functionality was increased by the application of chain transfering agents. Synthesis and characterization of the oligomers are described.

Description / Table of Contents: According to MAYO and SMITH, the chain transfer constants of dialkyl xanthogendisulfides with different alkyl substituents were investigated in the bulk polymerization of butadiene. Contrarily to emulsion polymerization, the chain transfer constants are independent of the alkyl groups. By ESR measurements no difference in the stability of the radicals was found. The values of retardation of polymerization rate were compared with those of emulsion polymerization.

Notes: Interaction of uranyl ions with catechol has been investigated by the potentiometric and spectrophotometric techniques. Potentiometric titrations of uranyl nitrate with caustic potash in presence of catechol exhibited a sharp inflexion at 2⅔ moles of alkali der mole of the metal ion. At the initial stages of the titration, the reaction was shown to proceed as: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \rm{UO}_2^{2 + } + \rm{C}_6 \rm{H}_4 \left({\rm{OH}} \right)_2 \rightleftharpoons \rm{UO}_2 \rm{C}_6 \rm{H}_4 \rm{O}_2 + 2\rm{H}^ + . $$\end{document} The equilibrium constant of the reaction was found to be 2.88 · 10-7 giving a value of 3.87·1014 for the formation constant of the chelate. Equilibrium constant of the reaction: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \rm{2UO}_2^{2 + } + 2\rm{H}_2 \rm{A} \rightleftharpoons \left({\rm{UO}_2 \rm{A}_2 } \right)_{\rm2} + 4\rm{H}^ + . $$\end{document} has been found to be 1.00·10-10. The binuclear chelate species have been found to polymerize further through hydrolytic reactions.

Notes: The line source technique for determination of thermal conductivity has been modified to allow measurement to higher temperatures than previously attained. This required the addition of a high-temperature tube furnace to the standard experimental equipment. The modified device was used to measure the temperature-dependent thermal conductivities of a glass- and talc-filled phenol-formaldehyde(phenolic) resin and a glass- and fiberglass-filled acrylonitrile-butadiene (AB) copolymer. Thermal conductivities of the virgin material were measured from room temperature to the onset of thermal decomposition. The char material thermal conductivities were measured from room temperature to approximately 900°C. A least-squares fit of the data yielded a linear-curve fit for the virgin material and a third-order fit for the char material.

Notes: Raman spectra of ethyl dithioacetate (CH3CS2C2H5) and ethyl thionoacetate (CH3C(=S)OC2H5) have been measured as a function of temperature in the liquid phase and in the solid phase at low temperature. For both compounds disappearance of several bands from the liquid spectrum on solidification established the presence of more than one conformer in the liquid phase. Temperature variation studies on band pairs whose components belong to different isomers gave enthalpy differences of 598±48 cal mol-1 and 1072±65 cal mol-1 between the conformers of CH3CS2C2H5 and CH3C(=S)OC2H5 respectively. The most probable low-energy conformer, in both instances, is the s-cis form with all the heavy atoms contained in a single plane.
