Notes: Summary Circulating immune complexes in the sera of patients with confirmed histological diagnosis of carcinoma of the prostate, were found to interfere in the sensitized leukocyte's in vitro reactivity to prostate cancer associated antigen as evaluated by tube leukocyte adherence inhibition assay, thereby suggesting an inhibitory role of such serum factors in host's anti tumor cell mediated immune responses.

Notes: Summary A double-blind, placebo controlled, cross-over study was carried out in 10 normal healthy volunteers to investigate the effects of sertraline 25 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg and 100 mg on aspects of cognitive functioning. Changes with respect to placebo in objective tests of psychomotor function (critical flicker fusion and choice reaction time) showed that sertraline had an alerting effect. The changes were not consistent with subjective reports of drowsiness.

Notes: Abstract Liquid — liquid extraction of Ag(I) by diphenyl-2-pyridylmethane (DPPM) in benzene from aqueous nitric and sulfuric acid solutions containing thiocyanate ions has been studied at ambient temperature (24±2 °C). The metal is extracted quantitatively from 0.01M HNO3+0.02M KSCN; or 0.25M H2SO4+0.02M KSCN by 0.1M DPPM (optimum extraction conditions). Slope analysis indicates that two types of ion-pair complexes i.e. [(DPPMH)+·Ag(SCN) 2 − ] and [(DPPMH) 2 + ·Ag(SCN) 3 2− ] are involved in the extraction process. Separation factors determined at optimum conditions reveal the separation of Ag(I) from Cs(I), Br(I), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Fe(III), Au(III) (from HNO3 solution only), Cr(III), Hf(IV), Ta(V), Sn(IV) and Cr(VI). With the exception of thiosulfate, other complexing anions like ascorbate, acetate, citrate, oxalate do not hinder the extraction of Ag(I) under optimum conditions.

Notes: Abstract Comparative effects of potassium chloride and potassium sulfate at various levels of potassium on the performance of ARZ variety of wheat were studied at Agriculture Research Station Dera Ismail Khan, N.W.F.P., Pakistan. The experiment was laid out in three different rotationsviz, rice-wheat, maize-wheat and fallow-wheat. Potassic fertilizers were applied at the rate of 0, 37, 74, 111 and 148 kg k/ha alongwith the basal dose of 135 kgN plus 44 kg P/ha. Wheat yield data showed that the application of 37 kg K/ha of potassium chloride was found better in case of rice-wheat and fallow-wheat rotation and 37 kg K/ha of potassium sulfate for maize-wheat rotation. On the average of the three rotations, potassium sulfate at the rate of 74 kg K/ha (90 kg K2O/ha) was found better and economical. Both the sources were almost equally effective but potassium sulfate out-yielded potassium chloride. Protein content of grains was significantly increased due to K application irrespective of the source and potassium sulfate was found with significantly higher protein content than potassium chloride.

Notes: Abstract Elastic moduli of mixed alkali borate glasses based on lithium and sodium oxides are calculated by measuring ultrasonic velocities and densities. For the purpose of measuring the velocity with high accuracy, the McSkimin criterion for determining the correct cyclic overlap between echoes is used. The structure of the system is discussed as a function of composition by considering the behaviour of elastic properties. Infrared studies have also been done which confirm the conclusions reached by the ultrasonic studies of the given system.

Notes: Abstract Studies on the role of cell-mediated immune responses in human neurocysticercosis (NCC) are lacking. Various cell-mediated immune responses such as lymphocyte subpopulation, lymphocyte transformation to cysticercus antigens and cytokine profile were carried out in NCC patients. Lymphocyte transformation assays using larval antigens showed significantly higher 3H-thymidine uptake. Immunophenotyping analysis showed an insignificant increase in B cells and a decrease in total T cells. However, there was a significant decrease (P 〈 0.05) in CD8+ T cells whereas there was no change in other cells like CD4+, HLA-DR+ and CD16+/CD56+. Cytokine profile revealed significantly higher (P 〈 0.01) production of Th1 cytokines (γ-IFN and IL-2) using cysticercal antigens as stimulants for peripheral blood mononuclear cells, while there was no difference in IL-4 levels between NCC patients and healthy controls. The cytokine profile indicated the involvement of Th-1-like responses in NCC patients.

Notes: Abstract . Previous studies have shown one of the causative agents of periodontitis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, can be killed by red light in the presence of the light-activated antimicrobial agent toluidine blue O (TBO). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of irradiating the organism with red light in the presence of TBO on its proteolytic enzyme activity. Suspensions of P. gingivalis were exposed to light with a wavelength of 633 nm in the presence of various concentrations of TBO. Samples were taken at various times and their proteolytic activity determined by assay of azocasein hydrolysis. On exposure to 126 J of red light in the presence of 12.5 µg/ml of TBO the proteolytic enzyme activity was reduced by 100%. The results of this study have shown that the main virulence factor of P. gingivalis, its proteolytic activity, can be inactivated by red light in the presence of TBO. This, together with the known bactericidal activity of the TBO/light combination, suggests that photodynamic therapy may prove important in reducing the effectiveness of P. gingivalis as a periodontopathogen in vivo.
