    Notes: Summary Tetrahymena pyriformis W were brought to a nonmultiplying state by removal of required amino acids from their growth medium. After amino-acid replacement, the incorporation rates of H3-uridine, H3-thymidine and H3-leucine were measured by the autoradiographic method. Following amino-acid replacement, the first response was detected in RNA synthesis, then protein synthesis, then DNA synthesis and, lastly, in cell division. Amino-acid deprived cells showed a 23% net increase in DNA content, a result supporting the view of others that protein synthesis is not necessary for the initiation of DNA synthesis but is necessary for the maintainance of DNA synthesis.

    Notes: Abstract Line transects were used to sample the structure and diversity of the hermatypic coral community (Scleractinia) on four shallow shelf-edge reefs in South Florida (25° 22′N to 25° 29′N). Low diversities, cover and abundance indicated that this area was a suboptimum habitat for reef-building corals. The lack of acroporids on the shallow fore-reef, the increase in total coral cover with depth and the greater abundance of Montastrea annularis in the deepest zones suggests that cooling of surface water during severe winter cold fronts is a major environmental control on the distribution of hermatypic corals with depth. Such disturbances, occurring more frequently than hurricanes, may preclude the hard-coral community from attaining higher levels of cover and abundance. The shallow zones on the reefs nearest to tidal passes, through which cooled by water enters the reef tract, had the least developed community. In the deeper reef-zones, species richness and abundance increased from north to south over a distance of 13 km.

    Notes: Abstract  Fire can cause severe nitrogen (N) losses from grassland, chaparral, and temperate and boreal forest ecosystems. Paradoxically, soil ammonium levels are markedly increased by fire, resulting in high rates of primary production in re-establishing plant communities. In a manipulative experiment, we examined the influence of wild-fire ash residues on soil, microbial and plant N pools in a recently burned Californian bishop pine (Pinus muricata D. Don) forest. Ash stimulated post-fire primary production and ecosystem N retention through direct N inputs from ash to soils, as well as indirect ash effects on soil N availability to plants. These results suggest that redistribution of surface ash after fire by wind or water may cause substantial heterogeneity in soil N availability to plants, and could be an important mechanism contributing to vegetation patchiness in fire-prone ecosystems. In addition, we investigated the impact of fire on ecosystem N cycling by comparing 15N natural abundance values from recently burned and nearby unburned P. muricata forest communities. At the burned site, 15N natural abundance in recolonising species was similar to that in bulk soil organic matter. By contrast, there was a marked 15N depletion in the same species relative to the total soil N pool at the unburned site. These results suggest that plant uptake of nitrate (which tends to be strongly depleted in 15N because of fractionation during nitrification) is low in recently burned forest communities but could be an important component of eco- system N cycling in mature conifer stands.

    Notes: Abstract . Previous studies have shown one of the causative agents of periodontitis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, can be killed by red light in the presence of the light-activated antimicrobial agent toluidine blue O (TBO). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of irradiating the organism with red light in the presence of TBO on its proteolytic enzyme activity. Suspensions of P. gingivalis were exposed to light with a wavelength of 633 nm in the presence of various concentrations of TBO. Samples were taken at various times and their proteolytic activity determined by assay of azocasein hydrolysis. On exposure to 126 J of red light in the presence of 12.5 µg/ml of TBO the proteolytic enzyme activity was reduced by 100%. The results of this study have shown that the main virulence factor of P. gingivalis, its proteolytic activity, can be inactivated by red light in the presence of TBO. This, together with the known bactericidal activity of the TBO/light combination, suggests that photodynamic therapy may prove important in reducing the effectiveness of P. gingivalis as a periodontopathogen in vivo.

    Notes: Abstract A planar, fixed-orbit model of the rotation of the planet Mercury is analyzed. The model includes only the solar torques on the planet's permanent asymmetry and its solar tidal bulge. For this model, it is shown that the zero of the averaged tidal torque corresponds to an asymptotically stable periodic solution of the second kind which, for two tidal torque representations, is close to the asymptotically stable equilibrium point corresponding to an exact 3∶2 spin-orbit resonance. A conjecture that the current rotation state of Mercury is due to transfer from capture by the zero of the averaged tidal torque to 3∶2 resonance capture with changes in the eccentricity of the planet's orbit is discussed briefly.
