Notes: Separate neutral aqueous solutions of either (a) methylcob(III)alamin (2) and (heptamethyl cob(II)yrinate) perchlorate (3) or of b) cob(II)alamin ( = vitamin B12r; (4) and [Coβ-methyl(heptamethyl cob(III)yrinate)] perchlorate (5) equilibrated thermally at r.t. according to 2 + 3 ⇄ 4 + 5. The corresponding equilibrium constant Ke was determined (Ke = 0.63 ± 0.15). This equilibration experiment indicates that the coordination of the nucleotide function in methylcob(II)alamin (2) hardly affects the thermodynamics of the Co—C bond homolysis in aqeous solution when compared to nucleotide-free methylcorrinoids such as 5.

    Notes: [2 + 2]-Cycloaddition of an Iminoborane to a Methylene-Titanium Coordination CompoundThe iminoborane tBuB ≡ NtBu (1c) reacts with the short-lived titanaethene H2C = TiCp2 (3) to give the 1-aza-2-bora-4-titanacyclobutane 4c by [2 + 2]-cycloaddition. A corresponding reaction with the more reactive iminoboranes 1a, b, d is indicated by NMR data.

Notes: A systematic study of the effect of potassium hydroxide on the autoxidation of poly(propylene oxide)s with number average molecular weights, M̄n, in the range 400-3000 has been made in the range of temperature 110-140°C. For all the polymers a considerable increase in the induction time was produced by KOH in solution in the polymer, the increase being most marked for the polymer of lowest molecular weight. For the polymers of molecular weight 1000 and lower, the rate of the subsequent autoxidation was considerably reduced by the KOH, the effect being greatest for the polymer of molecular weight 400. For polymers of molecular weight 2000 and above no change in rate was observed. The effectiveness of KOH as an antioxidant is shown to depend on the concentration of terminal hydroxyl groups and is explained by the non-radical decomposition of RO-2 ions.

Notes: A series of six Hytrel/PVC blends were prepared by solution blending Hytrel in methylene chloride and PVC in tetrahydrofuran. The samples were subsequently prepared in sheet form by hot pressing at 170°C. Physical and mechanical properties of the homopolymers and the blends were investigated. The copolyester homopolymer is a partly crystalline elastomeric material. The level of crystallinity was measured by x-ray diffraction and the sensitivity of this level to heat treatments and quenching determined by DSC. A Morgan pulse propagation meter was used to measure sonic velocity and, indirectly, acoustic impedance of the blends. Dynamic mechanical studies indicated that blends containing 25%-50% by weight of Hytrel were completely compatible in the sense that a single glass transition was observed; but as the Hytrel level was increased to 60% and 65%, a shoulder became apparent on the low-temperature side of the glass transition peak. At 80% Hytrel, two peaks were observed, indicating incompatibility. The glass transition temperatures of these blends were found to decrease linearly with added Hytrel.

Notes: The collisionally activated decomposition of [M + H]+ ions, generated by fast atom bombardment (FAB) of glutathione conjugates, has been studied by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) using hybrid sector/quadrupole instruments. Abundant fragments of diagnostic utility were present in the daughter ion spectra. Common fragmentation modes were observed but their relative importance was strongly dependent on the nature of the conjugated species. As an example of a general approach to the characterization of glutathione conjugates in biological samples, the acetaminophen-glutathione conjugate was identified in rat bile, following coadministration of (2H0)- and (2H3)acetaminophen, using the experimental sequence: (i) conventional FAB mass spectrometric analysis, (ii) MS/MS using constant neutral loss (129 u) scanning to identify parent ions corresponding to glutathione conjugates, (iii) MS/MS to yield daughter ion spectra of parents so identified and corresponding to (2H0)- and (2H3)-labeled conjugates.

Notes: A mechanical device for the continuous purification of biological material using immunosorbent was developed. The system consists of heat-sealed nylon pouches containing agarose-bound antibody, attached to an endless 35 mm wide Mylar belt that passes through four chambers sequentially. The biological material is bound and dissociated, and the immobilized antibody is regenerated for repeated isolation and purification of antigen. The belt design incorporates features to minimize carry-over between chambers and prevent damage to the agarose-bound antibody in repeated passes through the system. An existing batch method for the purification of human placental alkaline phosphatase using immobilized rabbit antisera was adapted to continuous purification in the device. The belt contained a low affinity immunosorbent and made five complete passes through the system. A decrease in antigen binding capacity between free immunosorbent suspensions and belt immunosorbent in pouches was observed. This was shown to be the result of the diffusion resistance offered by the pouch and the short exposure times of each pouch in the chambers. A decrease in antigen binding capacity between successive belt passes was also observed, and resulted from the inability of the agarose in the pouches to resuspend completely after each pass. The low efficiency of the agitation method and the roller device used to squeeze the pouches were the reasons for this deficiency.

Notes: Bench scale packed columns were used to study the kinetic behavior of biological denitrification. After tracer studies were run to determine flow characteristics, steady state nitrate profiles were determined. A first-order rate expression with an Arrhenius temperature dependence is an adequate model of the reaction for nitrate-nitrogen concentrations of 〈 100 mg/l and temperature of 5° to 20°C. The rate constants are proportional to the packing surface area.
