    Notes: Abstract Photoconductivity measurements on a stable photocrosslinkable nonlinear optical polymer — PVCN (polyvinylcinnamate)/CNNB-R (3-cinnamoyloxy-4-[4-N,N-diethylamino)-2-cinnamoyloxy phenylazo] nitrobenzene) are reported. Photoconductivity in this polymer system, in both crosslinked and uncrosslinked states, was observed without introducing any sensitizer or carrier-transport agents. Absorption of CNNB-R (λpeak=518 nm) results in photocarrier generation and it is conjectured that CNNB-R also plays a role in the carrier transport. Such polymers are candidate materials for photorefraction.

    Notes: Summary A simple and efficient gene transfer system of trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata Raf.) was developed using epicotyl segments. The segments were infected with Agrobacterium harboring the binary vector pBI121 or pBI101-O12-p1. Both vectors contained the neomycin phosphotransferase II (NPTII) and the β-glucuronidase (GUS) genes. In the plasmid pBI101-O12-p1, the GUS gene was directed to the promoter region of ORF12 (rolC) of the Ri plasmid. On a selection medium containing 100 or 200 μg/ml kanamycin, adventitious shoots were formed from 21.7–44.6% of the segments. Histochemical GUS assay showed that 55.4–87.7% of the shoots expressed the GUS gene. The stable integration of this gene was also confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis and by Southern blot analysis. When the pBI101-O12-p1 plasmid was used, the GUS activity was found to be located in phloem cells of leaf, stem and root. More than 100 transformed plants were obtained using this method within 2–3 months.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the coupling between two photorefractive unidirectional ring resonators. The first resonator is driven by an external laser beam via photorefractive two-wave mixing. The internal oscillating beam is then employed to drive the second ring resonator via the same mechanism. Closed form solutions for the oscillation intensities and frequencies are given, and their numerical results are presented and discussed.

    Notes: Abstract An optical parametric oscillator (OPO), as a novel kind of broadband Stokes source, is employed for coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). Compared to the conventional dye laser configuration OPO-CARS offers practical advantages. The tunable OPO allows a fast and comfortable frequency tuning. The excitation bandwidth of about 35 cm−1 (FWHM) limits the spectral range of effective and stable single pulse CARS generation but can be used to enhance selected spectral structures.

    Notes: Abstract An intense radiation at 395.0 nm has been observed when lithium vapor is optically pumped in a heat pipe with a pulsed dye laser whose output wavelength is tuned near the Li 2s–4s two-photon resonance transition. The radiation is emitted in the direction along the pump laser beam. It is proposed that the 395.0 nm radiation is mainly generated through three-photon excitation and one-Raman-photon scattering followed by two-cascade (spontaneous) emission. The overall reaction mechanism can be described by a parametric six-wave mixing process. The quantum efficiency of the observed process is estimated to be of the order of 2 × 10−6.

    Notes: Abstract A two-stage Raman-conversion system pumped with a Q-switched alexandrite laser is proposed for the generation of broadly tunable infrared radiation. The first stage is a high-pressure Raman cell which accepts a pump beam in long-focusing or parallel-beam geometry, while the successive second one is made of a multi-pass Raman cell with repeated focusing. Using a selected combination of vibrational or rotational Raman shifting by H2, a spectrum ranging from 0.75 μm to 15 μm can be covered by this system.

    Notes: Abstract A new type of anisotropic scattering with ring-and-line structure is observed for the first time from a BaTiO3 crystal illuminated by a linearly polarized laser beam. The analysis presented herein is based on the photorefractive four-wave interaction of the incident, reflected, and scattered beams. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate the temporal instabilities of mode intensities in two coupled unidirectional photorefractive ring resonators. The first resonator is driven by an external laser beam via photorefractive two-wave mixing. The internal oscillating beam is then employed to drive the second ring resonator. The second ring resonator provides a nonlinear loss mechanism for the coupled system. Complete spatial-temporal equations for describing the coupled system are derived and mean-field approximation is employed to simplify the transient analysis. The results of linear stability analysis indicate that the coupled system exhibits instability in the off-state and steady-state operation. The instability is explained in terms of competition between nonlinear gain and loss. The results are presented and discussed.

    Notes: Abstract In the preceding paper, we used the mean-field approximation to formulate the time evolution equations for two coupled unidirectional photorefractive ring resonators. Linear stability analysis based upon the steady-state solutions of the mean-field equations showed that the coupled system may become unstable in the unstable off- and steady-state operation regimes. In this paper, we investigate the temporal behavior and nonlinear dynamics of the coupled system. The results indicate that the coupled system exhibits self-pulsation and chaos in the unstable off-state and steady-state operation regimes. The instability is explained in terms of the competition between the nonlinear gain and loss. Numerical results of the transient equations are presented and discussed. The coupling between unidirectional ring resonators is extended to explain the instability in self-pumped phase conjugators.

    Notes: Summary We have developed a rapid, simple transformation procedure for intact cells of Hansenula polymorpha. It is a modification of the LiAc method and can yield 104–105 transformants/μg DNA. The use of stationaryphase cells, a high cell density per plate and a hear pulse at 50°C for 10 min are among major modifications of the original method. We have also found that, within the XhoI-SalI chromosomal fragment of Saccharomyces cerevisae containing the LEU2 gene, a sequence exists which supports autonomous replication of plasmid moleculles in H. polymorpha.
