Notes: Abstract: Consider a group of products sharing common parts and assemblies. The products in question we call a product family, and the common elements, the platform. In this paper, we present a method for designing product platforms and the derived family that takes into consideration both the technical performance requirements as well as the cost of the product family. The design of a platform-based product family is formulated as a general optimization problem in which the advantages of designing a common platform must be balanced against the constraints of the individual product variants and constraints of the family as a whole. This optimization approach forms the basis for a practical implementation as an interactive, team-based negotiation model for designing a family of interplanetary spacecraft based on a common platform. The approach is used to consider and specify different subsystems that could be made common to all the missions. It is also used to evaluate the impact of those platform design decisions on the performance of the product family, and thus be able to select from among feasible platform designs.

Notes: Abstract NASA Langley and the U.S. Army have jointly sponsored programs to assess the effects of realistic flight environments and ground-based exposure on advanced composite materials and structures. Composite secondary structural components were initially installed on commercial transport aircraft in 1973; secondary and primary structural components were installed on commercial helicopters in 1979; and primary structural components were installed on commercial aircraft in the mid-to-late 1980's. Over 5.3 million total component flight hours have been accumulated on 350 composite components since 1973. Service performance, maintenance characteristics, and residual strength of numerous composite components are reported. In addition to data on flight components; 10-year ground-based exposure test results on material coupons are reported. Comparisons between flight and ground-based environmental effects for several composite material systems are also presented. Test results indicate excellent in-service performance with the composite components during the 15 year evaluation period. Good correlation between ground-based material performance and operational structural performance has been achieved.

Notes: Abstract The prism-coupler technique is used to investigate changes in the refractive index of PolyMethylMethAcrylate (PMMA) waveguide films exposed to low fluence KrF-laser radiation. A small (∼0.5%) but significant increase in index for light at 632.8 nm is observed following prolonged exposure, probably due to photochemical modification of the polymer. Weak etching of films is also evident even at a fluence as low as 6 mJ cm−2.

Notes: Abstract Calcium carbonate-filled polypropylene composites were processed on two different highintensity mixing devices. The resulting relationships between morphology, processing conditions and mechanical properties of these composites were studied using an electron microscope with an image-analysis system and impact and tensile testing. Only under more extreme conditions did the recently developed turbine mixer give as good a dispersion as the classical Banbury-style mixer. Relatively small additions of the filler resulted in small increases in absorbed impact energy. Semi-quantitative information about the randomness achieved in the mixing process was obtained using a dilation/counting procedure and computer-derived spatial images. Object-specific parameters such as the percentage of objects greater than 1 μm in size give good correlation with the mechanical properties of the mixture.

Notes: Abstract White-beam synchrotron X-ray topography has been used to image dislocations and grain boundaries in high-purity columnar-grained polycrystalline ice. It was found that screw, 30° and 60° basal dislocations with 〈 1 1 ¯2 0 〉 Burgers vectors far outnumber other dislocations: near free surfaces, the dislocations were bent because of image forces. Circular prismatic dislocation loops with [0 0 0 1] Burgers vectors and dipoles were also found. These probably formed due to thermal shock. In one sample, the dislocation structures of three grains were clearly observed simultaneously, although no dislocations were visible in the boundaries.

Notes: Abstract The textures of two different conical shaped liners, fabricated by the same forging processes from arc-cast and powder-sintered ingots, were investigated by using neutron-diffraction measurements and three-dimensional orientation-distribution-function (ODF) analysis. The major textures of both liners could be described by the (1 1 1) 〈uv w〉 and (1 0 0) 〈u v w 〉 type. The two liners had essentially identical texture at the 8 cm position (measured from the base of the cone) with strong sheet-type texture components, i.e. (1 1 1) 〈¯1 0 1〉, (1 1 1) 〈¯1 1 0〉 and (1 0 0) 〈0 1 1〉. However, the dominant textures at the 3 cm positions were 〈1 1 1〉 and 〈1 0 0〉 fibre textures with the fibre axes oriented parallel to the normal direction in both liners. A strong cube texture was observed at the 3 cm position of the arc-cast liner but it was not observed for the powder-sintered liner. The arc-cast liner had a generally higher degree of texture than the powder-sintered liner.

Notes: Abstract Room temperature tensile testing of the B2-structured compound Pd-52 at% In produced, a yield strength of 50 MPa, a fracture strength of 130 MPa, and limited tensile ductility (∼3%). Examination, in the transmission electron microscope, of the deformed microstructure indicated that it deforms by 〈001〉 {100} slip. Extra reflections and streaking were observed in selected area electron diffraction patterns, which appear to be a thin foil effect.

Notes: Abstract The dislocation substructures in the DO3-structured alloys, Fe-34AI and Fe-28AI-6Cr, were examined by transmission electron microscopy following room temperature compression. In both alloys a small number of a〈001〉 dislocations, produced through the energetically favourable interaction of two pairs of antiphase boundary-coupled a/2〈1 1 1〉 dislocations, was observed. It was also found that, relative to the binary alloy, one effect of the chromium addition was to increase the B2 character of the alloy, but conversely to decrease the DO3 character. These results are rationalized on the basis of the atom site location of the chromium atoms in the DO3 structure.
