Notes: The micelle-forming monomers of sodium 6-acrylamidocaproate (Na 6-AAC), sodium 11-acrylamidoundecanoate (Na 11-AAU), sodium 11-(N-methylacrylamido) undecanoate (Na 11-MAAU), and sodium 11-(N-ethylacrylamido) undecanoate (Na 11-EAAU) have been synthesized and polymerized. Except poly(Na 6-AAC), the molecular weights of the other three poly(sodium acrylamidoalkanoate) s were over 106. They behave as strong anionic polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions. Their solution properties, such as viscosity, charge density, and radius of gyration, were investigated. The performance of these anionic polyelectrolytes as coagulant aids in water treatment were assessed by jar test. Poly(Na 6-AAC) and poly (Na 11-AAU) were superior to poly (Na 11-MAAU) and poly (Na 11-EAAU) in terms of flocs settling. All these four anionic polyelectrolytes tested in water treatment are as effective as a commercially available cationic polyamine organic coagulant (Hyperfloc CP 753).

Notes: Abstract  Many of the present generation biomaterials are still based upon the early concept that implantable materials should be bioinert and therefore designed to evoke minimal tissue response, if none. However, a growing body of clinical data demonstrates that the long survivability of these materials is hampered by high rates of failure, which is primarily attributed to interfacial instability. It has therefore become understood that this approach is not optimal. Modern approaches implicate the use of biomaterials that can actively interact with tissues and induce their intrinsic repair and regenerative potential. This involves control over the cell cycle, the molecular framework that controls cell proliferation and differentiation. Class A bioactive glass-ceramic materials were the first materials shown to endorse these properties and, depending upon the rate of resorption and release of ions, can create chemical gradients with specific biological actions over cells and tissues. Optimising this bioactive regenerative capacity of Bioactive glass-ceramics offers great hope for producing biomaterials that can stimulate growth, repair, and regeneration of any human tissue.

Notes: Abstract A technique for measuring near instantaneous concentration profiles of a fluid injected through a narrow inclined slot at the wall into a high unit Reynolds number flat plate turbulent boundary layer is discussed. The concentration profiles are determined by measuring the light intensity emitted from a fluorescent dye, premixed into the injectant flow, as the injectant convects through an excitation laser beam. The fluorescence intensity is quantified by an electronically shuttered single stage microchannel plate image intensifier coupled to a linear photodiode array. This instrumentation provided the high spatial and temporal resolution required for these boundary layer concentration profile measurements. The laser induced fluorescence technique is being used to study the diffusion of injected polymer solutions away from the near wall region of the boundary layer where these solutions are effective in reducing drag. The diffusion of slot injected water has also been examined and the present results are in excellent agreement with previous studies.

Notes: Abstract A variety of methods have been developed to obtain acurate frequency estimates from laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) signals. Rapid scanning and fiber optic LDV systems require robust methods for extracting accurate frequency estimates with computational efficiency from data with poor signal-to-noise ratios. These methods typically fall into two general categories, time domain parametric techniques and frequency domain techniques. The frequency domain approach is initiated by transforming the Doppler bursts into the frequency domain using the fast Fourier transform (FFT). From this basic transformation a variety of interpolation procedures (parabolic, Gaussian, and centroid fits) have been developed to optimize the frequency estimation accuracy. The time domain approaches are derived from the parametric form of a sinusoid. The estimation of constants in this relationship is performed to satisfy specific constraints, typically a minimization of a variance expression. A comparison of these techniques is presented using simulated signals and additive Gaussian and Poisson white noise. The statistical bias and random errors for each method are presented from 200 signal simulations at each condition. Frequency estimation via the FFT with zero-padding and a Gaussian interpolation scheme was found to produce the lowest bias and random errors.

Notes: Abstract Some unexpected chemistry will be discussed which occurs during the production of highT c superconductors by an oxalate route. Evaporation (rather than filtration) of a 1∶2∶3 Y∶Ba∶Cu nitrate solution containing excess oxalic acid was done, in order to make sure that the solid had the same composition as the solution. It was assumed that the removal of water and nitric acid by vacuum would quantitatively yield the salts as oxalates. Surprisingly, the evaporation changed what was initially a homogeneous, but off-composition, material into a rather inhomogeneous material. During the evaporation, the yttrium and barium were apparently redissolved from their initial form as submicrometre particles containing all three metals. They were redeposited as 10–100 μm rectangular and octahedral crystals. However, this material yields very good superconductors upon simple grinding and heat treatment as measured by conductivity and a.c. induction.

Notes: Abstract The relationship between the transport J c and the microstructure of the bulk YBa2Cu3O7−03B4; samples prepared in various sintering conditions has been studied. The results show that the oxygen atmosphere during sintering and cooling not only influence the crystal structure of the grains but also the grain sizes and the nature of the grain boundaries. The pellet forming pressure affects the orientation of the grains. The width of the grain boundaries is the most important factor in determining the values of transport J c.
