    Notes: Single crystals of mixed methyl-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-aminopropanoate (MAP): 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA) have been grown from solution using a 40:60 mixture of ethanol and ethyl acetate. Formation of an equimolar complex is confirmed by x-ray diffraction studies. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21. The lattice parameters are a=6.9196(±0.005) A(ring); b=7.673(±0.008) A(ring); c=18.554(±0.001) A(ring); and β=92.547(±0.006)0. b axis is the unique twofold axis and there are two molecules per unit cell. The molecules stack along the b axis with MAP atop MNA atop MAP. Details of the molecular orientation are given. The Raman spectra also indicate that the parent molecules are not disturbed in the process of crystallization. The second harmonic generation efficiency of the new material for 1064 nm laser radiation is observed to be the same as that of MAP but lower than that of MNA. The latter is attributed to the absorption at 532 nm in the mixed crystal. The melting point determined by differential scanning calorimetry is 104.30 °C.

    Notes: A study of the effect on the superconducting and microstructural properties of YBa2Cu3O7−x screen printed thick films as a function of silver content (in the form of Ag and Ag2O) from 0 to 40 wt. % by employing different experimental techniques has been carried out. It has been found that silver improves the sinterability and intergrain connectivity and reduces the normal state resistivity. The superconducting transition temperature of the above films was found to be in the range of 82 to 91 K. Our results show that a small addition of silver (Ag or Ag2O) helps in enhancing the superconducting properties. However, large amounts lead to formation of 211 phase as the decomposed product and thereby deteriorate the quality of the superconductor. Silver has been found to remain as metal in the samples for the entire range. Further, in light of our results, it seems that an addition of Ag metal is more beneficial than the addition of Ag2O.

    Notes: InGaAs strained epitaxial layers on GaAs are of considerable interest in semiconductor devices. An important feature is the critical thickness of the epitaxial layer beyond which relaxation occurs, affecting the device performance. With this in view, a series of such structures have been grown by organometallic vapor phase epitaxy and characterized by ion channeling, high resolution x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The results of these three techniques are compared for the samples in this study which are fully strained, nominally and by experimental measurements. Beam steering effect that occurs at low energy channeling is also addressed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this letter we present the results of a photoluminescence study of the interdiffusion of arsenic and phosphorous in the In0.66Ga0.33As/In0.66Ga0.33As0.7P0.3 system over the temperature range 950–600 °C. We have shown that the diffusion is Fickian with no dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the substrate doping type or etch pit density. For both tin- and sulfur-doped substrates the diffusion can be described by a diffusion coefficient D, which is given by D=D0 exp(−EA/kT), where D0=23 cm2/s and EA=3.7 eV for temperatures greater than 675 °C. This activation energy is the same as that determined for the group III interdiffusion in In0.2Ga0.8As/GaAs. Below this temperature a lower activation energy process takes over with D0=5×10−10 cm2/s and EA=1.7 eV.

    Notes: We demonstrate that electrochemically etched, hydrogen capped SinHx clusters with n larger than 20 are obtained within a family of discrete sizes. These sizes are 1.0 (Si29), 1.67 (Si123), 2.15, 2.9, and 3.7 nm in diameter. We characterize the particles via direct electron imaging, excitation and emission optical spectroscopy, and colloidal crystallization. The band gaps and emission bands are measured. The smallest four are ultrabright blue, green, yellow and red luminescent particles. The availability of discrete sizes and distinct emission in the red, green and blue (RGB) range is useful for biomedical tagging, RGB displays, and flash memories. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report laser oscillation at ∼610 nm in aggregates of ultrasmall elemental Si nanoparticles. The particles are ultrabright red emitting, dispersed from bulk Si by electrochemistry. The aggregates are excited by radiation at 550–570 nm from a mercury lamp. Intense directed Gaussian beams, with a threshold, manifest the emission. We observe line narrowing, and speckle patterns, indicating spatial coherence. This microlasing constitutes an important step towards the realization of a laser on a chip, hence optoelectronics integration and optical interconnects. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) system is an important system in superconducting steady state tokamak (SST-1). It is used to drive and maintain the plasma current for 1000 s with a duty cycle of 17%. The LHCD system is being designed to launch 1 MW of radio frequency (rf) power at 3.7 GHz. The rf source is comprised of two high power klystron amplifiers, each capable of delivering 500 kW rf power. In this article, the results obtained during installation and commissioning of these klystrons are presented. Two klystrons (model TH2103D) have been successfully installed and commissioned on dummy loads, delivering ∼200 kW power for more than 1000 s. The maximum output power that could be obtained is limited due to the available direct current (dc) power supply. The test system is comprised of a TH2103D klystron, a low power rf (3.7 GHz/25 W) source, two high power four port circulators, two high power dual directional couplers, two arc detector systems, and two dummy water loads. To avoid rf breakdown in the rf components of the transmission line, the system has been pressurized with dry air to 3 bar. To energize and operate the klystron, a high voltage dc power supply, a magnet power supply, an ion pump power supply, a −65 kV floating anode modulator power supply, and a filament power supply are used. An arc detector unit has been installed to detect and initiate action within a few microseconds to protect the klystron, waveguides, and other rf passive components during arcing. To protect the klystron in the event of an arc, a fast responding (〈10 μs), rail gap based pressurized crowbar unit has been used. The entire system is water cooled to avoid excess temperature rise during high power continuous wave operation of the klystron and other rf components. The tube requires initial conditioning. Thereafter, the output rf power is studied as a function of beam parameters such as cathode voltage and beam current. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Tungsten-doped YBa2Cu3O7−x superconducting samples are characterized with the help of resistivity, crystal structural, microstructural, density d, and critical current density Jc studies for doping concentrations varying from 0.00 to 0.14 mol % of WO3. It has been found that doping of WO3 has hardly any influence of Tc, whereas it seems that d and Jc are affected. d and Jc of the samples increase in the range 0〈WO3≤0.04, but above this range, both start decreasing. The maximum Jc obtained at 77 K and zero magnetic field in YBa2Cu3O7−x doped with 0.04 mol % of WO3 is 450 A/cm2. The lower concentrations (〈0.04 mol %) seem to improve the density, whereas higher concentrations lead to porous structure and also induce the formation of BaCuO2 and Y2Ba1Cu1O5 nonsuperconducting phase as revealed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectral, and x-ray diffraction analyses. The x-ray diffraction analysis also showed no appreciable change in the lattice parameters with WO3 doping. It appears that the WO3 doping changes the microstructure of YBa2Cu3O7−x to influence its Jc.
