Conclusions The structural-strength characteristics of characteristics of cation-exchange chlorosulfonic acid sulfonation of polypropylene fibres containing grafted-on polystyrene have been studied at individual stages of modification and during the storage process. A significant decrease in strength of the cation-exchange fibres in the H- or Na-forms has been detected on storage under conditions which allow oxidative degradation of the copolymer. Reasons for the decrease in strength of sulfonated polypropylene yarns as a function of their moisture and oxygen content have been discussed, as well as the effect of the counterion.
