Notes: Abstract Sex pheromone components of the Japanese rice leaffolder moth, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were identified from ovipositor extracts of virgin females as (Z)-11-octadecenal, (Z)-13-octadecenal, (Z)-11-octadecen-1-ol and (Z)-13-octadecen-1-ol at a ratio of 11:100:24:36 by GC-EAD, GC, GC-MS. The total amount was estimated to be ca.0.9 ng/female. Field bioassays in Kagoshima, Japan, showed that the two aldehydes are essential for male attraction and the alcohols may have a synergistic effect on the aldehydes. A rubber septum containing 0.9 mg of the four components at the natural ratio was shown to be an effective lure for monitoring this pest in Japan. The above four components are quite different from the sex pheromone components reported previously for the same species of either Philippine or Indian origin; components were shown to be (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate and (Z)-13-octadecenyl acetate at a ratio of 98:2 in the Philippine blend and 1:10 in the Indian blend. Furthermore, in the field tests in Japan, neither the Philippine blend nor the Indian blend showed any attractive activity, while the Japanese blend attracted significant numbers of male moths. These results suggest that there are remarkable geographical variations in the sex pheromone composition of this species or there are several distinct species using different sex pheromone blends.

Notes: Abstract Cellular pattern formations of some epithelia are believed to be governed by the direct lateral inhibition rule of cell differentiation. That is, initially equivalent cells are all competent to differentiate, but once a cell has differentiated, the cell inhibits its immediate neighbors from following this pathway. Such a differentiation repeats until all non-inhibited cells have differentiated. The cellular polygonal patterns can be characterized by the numbers of undifferentiated cells and differentiated ones. When the differentiated cells become large in size, the polygonal pattern is deformed since more cells are needed to enclose the large cell. An actual example of such a cellular pattern was examined. The pupal wing epidermis of a butterfly Pieris rapae shows a transition of the equivalent-size cell pattern to the pattern involving large cells. The process of the transition was analyzed by using the method of weighted Voronoi tessellation that is useful for treatment of irregularly sized polygons. The analysis supported that the pattern transition of the early stage of the pupal wing epidermis is governed by the lateral inhibition rule. The differentiation takes place in order of largeness, but not smallness, of the apical polygonal area in the differentiating region of the pupal wing.

Notes: Abstract We estimate the marginal density function of a long-range dependent linear process by the kernel estimator. We assume the innovations are i.i.d. Then it is known that the term of the sample mean is dominant in the MISE of the kernel density estimator when the dependence is beyond some level which depends on the bandwidth and that the MISE has asymptotically the same form as for i.i.d. observations when the dependence is below the level. We call the latter the case where the dependence is not very strong and focus on it in this paper. We show that the asymptotic distribution of the kernel density estimator is the same as for i.i.d. observations and the effect of long-range dependence does not appear. In addition we describe some results for weakly dependent linear processes.

Notes: Abstract Let (X′i,Y i)′ be a set of observations form a stationary α-mixing process and Θ(x) be the conditional α-th quantile of Y given X = x. Several authors considered nonparametric estimation of Θ(x) in the i.i.d. setting. Assuming the smoothness of ΘFF(x), we estimate it by local polynomial fitting and prove the asymptotic normality and the uniform convergence.

Notes: Abstract: Single crystals of U(Ni1-xPdx)2Si2 with x = 0.05, 0.09 and 0.135 have been grown. Magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements were performed in a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields in order to study stability of magnetic phases in the solid solutions between UNi2Si2 and UPd2Si2 with a special emphasis on the type of ground state. In UPd2Si2 the simple AFI-type antiferromagnetic structure of U moments is observed at low temperatures. UNi2Si2 adopts the uncompensated AF structure (UAF) with the + + - stacking of U moments along the c-axis and consequently this compound exhibits a spontaneous magnetization corresponding to 1/3 of the U moment. The substitution of Pd for Ni leads to a rapid decay of the spontaneous magnetization. The evolution of magnetization and electrical resistivity behavior with Pd doping is tentatively attributed to the coexistence of the AF-I and UAF phases in the ground state of U(Ni0.91Pd0.09)2Si2 and U(Ni0.865Pd0.135)2Si2. In this scenario, the volume fraction of the AF-I phase rapidly grows with Pd doping on account of the UAF. At lowest temperatures an irreversible transition to the UAF phase is observed when a sufficiently high magnetic field is applied along the c-axis.

Notes: Summary Fast wavelets were recorded through skin-electrodes near the lateral canthus of the human eye while the electroretinogram (ERG) was neutralized by the nasal deviation of the visual axis. A high possibility is noted that these wavelets are the action potential of the optic nerve, which has failed to be picked up clinically.

Notes: Summary Combined effect of veratridine and sodium aspartate on rabbit retinas in vitro was studied. Observations suggested that mode of action of veratridine on the PII and PIII components of ERGs was modified by the presence of sodium aspartate in perfusate.
