    Notes: We have studied the surface chemistry of two lots of Biomer™ (BSP067 and BSUAOOl), and widely used commercial poly(ether urethane) (PEU). Although transmission infrared adsorption studies revealed no differences in the bulk chemistry of the two lots, the surface chemistry, as seen by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and static secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), was different. Lot BSP067 showed softsegment enrichment at the surface, which is typical of PEU. Lot BSUAOOl showed no evidence of either hard- or soft-segment PEU components at the surface. The surface of this lot was completely covered with a nonextractable additive identified as poly(diisopropy1 amino ethyl methacrylate). Small amounts of a low-molecular-weight antioxidant were observed at the surface of both samples. Because the biological response to polymers is dependent on surface structure, these results are of considerable importance to biomaterials research.

    Notes: Porous high-density polyethylene specimens were implanted in the femurs of mongrel canines. At the end of the residency period (3 or 6 months), the animals were sacrificed and the implants were retrieved. The work-of-fracture of the implant specimens was then determined using the technique of Tattersall and Tappin. The work required to fracture a specimen in three-point bending by controlled crack propagation through a triangular cross section was obtained directly from the load-deflection curve. The area of the resulting fracture surface was measured by macro-photographic techniques, and the work-of-fracture was calculated as work per unit area. The implants were subsequently sectioned and examined microradiographically to determine the extent of bone ingrowth. Bone specimens adjacent to the implants and porous high-density polyethylene controls (no ingrowth) were also tested to determine their work-of-fracture. The results showed that bone adjacent to the implant specimens had a higher work-of-fracture than normal medial, canine femoral bone and was not appreciably different from the composite. The work-of-fracture of porous high-density polyethylene was not significantly increased by an increase in bone infiltration, and this anomalous behavior was attributed to a degradation of the polyethylene during implant residence. Control studies supported this hypothesis.

    Notes: Thin films of poly(p-phenylene biphenyltetracarboximide) (BPDA-PDA), prepared by thermal imidization of the precursor poly(amic acid) on substrates, have been investigated by optical waveguide, ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS), infrared (IR), and dielectric spectroscopies. The polyimide films exhibit an extraordinarily large anisotropy in the refractive indices with the in-plane index n∥ = 1.806 and the out-of-plane index n⊥ = 1.589 at 1064 nm wavelength. No discernible effect of the film thickness on this optical anisotropy is found between films of ca. 2.1 and ca. 7.8 μm thickness. This large birefringence is attributed to the preferential orientation of the biphenyltetracarboximide moieties with their planes parallel to the film surface, coupled with the strong preference of BPDA-PDA chains to align along the film plane. The frequency dispersion of the in-plane refractive index n∥ is consistent with the results calculated by the Lorentz-Lorenz equation from the UV-visible spectrum exhibiting several absorption bands in the 170-500 nm region. The contribution from the IR absorption in the range 7000-400 cm,-1 computed by the Spitzer-Kleinmann dispersion relations from the measured spectra, adds ca. 0.046 to the in-plane refractive index n∥. Tilt-angle-dependent polarized IR results indicate nearly the same increase for the out-of-plane index n⊥. Application of the Maxwell relation then leads to the out-of-plane dielectric constant ε⊥ ≃ 2.7 at 1.2 × 1013 Hz, as compared with the measured value of ca. 3.0 at 106 Hz. Assuming this small difference to remain the same for the in-plane dielectric constants ε∥, we obtain a very large anisotropy in the dielectric properties of these polyimide films with the estimated in-plane dielectric constant ε∥ ≃ 3.4 at 1.2 × 1013 Hz, and ε∥ ≃ 3.7 at 106 Hz. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A series of Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) fragments have been synthesized and their biological activities compared with the parent peptide. The substructural units, 5-14 linear and 5-14 cyclic, have been used as models for MCH -  in 1H-nmr conformational studies. Conformational features predicted by molecular dynamics analyses find support in the nmr experiments.

    Notes: Optical-absorption, fluorescence, and Raman spectra for solutions, suspensions, and precipitates of poly(1,6-di-p-toluene sulfonoxy-2,4-hexadiyne) in and from nitrobenzene, acetone, and chloroform are presented. These are interpreted in terms of the occurrence of two forms of the polymer chain; a quasicrystalline form with properties close to those of single crystal polymer and a chain-extended form occurring in solution and colloidal particles, with an absorption energy of about 2.5 eV (20,000 cm-1). No evidence is found for the presence of very short polymer chains in partially polymerized monomer at low conversion. The relationship of these results to those for deformed single crystals is briefly discussed.

    Notes: Mean free paths for inelastic scattering (λ) of low energy electrons in poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) have been determined by measuring Al Kα excited C 1s and Si 2s photoelectron signal intensities as a function of ellipsometrically determined thicknesses of PMMA overlayers on silicon substrates. The λ values obtained are 29 ± 4 Å for 1196 eV electrons and 33 ± 5 Å for 1328 eV electrons. These data are necessary for the quantitative analysis of the surface region of PMMA and similar polymers by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The magnitude of the λ values determined indicates that XPS measurements can provide chemical information about the surface region of polymers, such as PMMA, in the depth range of ∼6 to 100 Å. The results of this study are compared and discussed with respect to λ values determined for other organic compounds.

    Notes: Copper surfaces treated with O2/CF4 and O2/CF4/N2 plasmas have been characterized using x-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopy. Deeper oxidation and fluorination result for oxygen-rich mixtures than for CF4-rich gas feeds. Film thicknesses increase with time of exposure. Copper oxidation is always deeper than fluorination for O2/CF4 mixtures. It appears that penetration of fluorine is more facile through the copper oxide matrix than through the metallic copper film. With addition of 5% N2, concentration of fluorine is enhanced relative to oxygen. These observations are discussed with respect to gas phase and surface reactions involving oxygen, fluorine and nitrogen.

    Notes: Secondary ion mass spectrometry has been used to identify the presence of Cu contamination on undoped semiinsulating GaAs wafer surfaces following polishing under certain conditions. The presence of a contaminating species on the wafer surface is indicated by the influence of pre-etch treatments on electrical measurements performed on heat-treated wafers, with and without Si implants. The identification of Cu as a contaminant is confirmed by photoluminescence measurements. With the appropriate wafer preparation process, the level of Cu contamination is below the SIMS detection limit of 〈1 × 1016 atoms cm-3.In the SIMS analysis of the surface-contaminated wafers, the Cu depth profile shape was dependent on the primary beam bombardment energy, suggesting a chemical segregation of Cu out of the altered layer, a redistribution that is known to occur in Si.To quantify the surface concentration of Cu, GaAs wafers were deliberately contaminated with Cu, heat treated and analysed with glow discharge mass spectrometry and SIMS to provide a cross-calibration.

    Notes: Surface oxidation reactions of cobalt, molybdenum and mixed cobalt-molybdenum metals have been investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The oxide stoichiometries have been determined from XPS intensity measurements. Such quantification has been important in identifying oxide compositions with characteristic XPS spectra. A number of discrete binary molybdenum oxides have been characterized after reactions at 200°C and pressures ranging from 1 atm to 10-6 Pa. At the lowest pressure, the Mo 3d spectra and O/Mo ratios suggest the formation of a molybdenum-oxygen structure with a stoichiometry near unity. By contrast, at higher pressures, oxides that are predominantly MoO2 and MoO3 appear, but other intermediate oxide structures are also identified. Well-defined binary oxides of cobalt can be prepared from cobalt metal after heating in oxygen at different pressures. New binary oxides of cobalt and molybdenum have been generated by the reaction on MoO3 or Co3O4 substrates. Oxidation of a thin film of molybdenum on a Co3O4 substrate has been shown to produce a nearly stoichiometric surface layer of CoMoO4. The procedure could be useful for the production of other ternary oxides of possible interest for use as XPS reference materials.
