Notes: Abstract: Three new bands in 174Ta have been identified by using the 160Gd(19F,5n) reaction at beam energies of 87 MeV and 96 MeV. Nilsson configurations are assigned to these bands. In the 9/2−[514]p+5/2−[512]n band, the AB neutron crossing occurs at a rotational frequency of 0.30 MeV. This is indicative of the disappearance of the evidence for a reduction in neutron pair correlations.

Notes: Abstract The structures of ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 and high-Tc YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconductor integrated films on (0 0 1) SrTiO3 substrate prepared by the r.f./d.c. magnetron sputtering method have been studied by X-ray grazing incidence reflectivity, diffuse scattering and high-resolution X-ray diffraction methods combined with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and SEM techniques. The results of high-resolution X-ray diffraction show that the quality of Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 improved as the thickness increased. On the other hand, the crystalline quality of YBa2Cu3O7−δ deteriorated and the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, decreased as the thickness of Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 increased. The strain state was similar for different thickness samples and the lattice mismatch strain in the Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 layer was almost totally relaxed. The root mean square (r.m.s.) roughness at Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47) O3/YBa2Cu3O7−δ interface was determined to be about 1.7±0.3 nm by X-ray specular reflectivity. The r.m.s. roughness at the surface of Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3/YBa2Cu3O7−δ bilayer samples was about 1.5 to 2.0±0.3 nm which was larger than that of YBa2Cu3O7−δ single-layer sample measured by both X-ray specular reflectivity and AFM methods. The results from AFM and SEM show that the morphological characteristics of the Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 layer surface were large grains covering about 10% in area distributed on a fine-grained matrix. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

Notes: Abstract A preconcentration method of 13 rare earth elements (REES) was studied for neutron activation ananlysis (NAA). Hydrated magnesium oxide was used as the preconcentration agent to absorb the REES ions from aqueous solution onto the solid magnesium oxide, which was separated and analyzed. It was observed that the Langmuir equation for isothermal adsorption was well obeyed by the REES under the condition studied. The efficiency of the preconcentration process using hydrated magnesium oxide was critically examined for each of REE and for mixture of REES by preparing a known volume of solution containing known amount of trace REES. NAA was used to analyze REES recovered by the preconcentration process. It was found that the REES recoveries were satisfactory and the preconcentration process is reliable. There are several resort resort areas in Taiwan where local people are enjoying its hot spring water. It is generally believed that the hot spring water spa would bring about some sorts of therapeutic functions. The preconcentration method developed above, was applied to analyze the trace amounts of REES in hot spring wate in Taiwan.

Notes: Abstract An attempt was made to establish a reliable method using chemical neutron activation analysis for surveillance of pollutants in waste waters released by plants manufacturing various kinds of products. Since preconcentration process played important role in the entire course of the analysis work, special precaution was taken to re-confirm that the recovery efficiencies for pollutant ions were satisfactory during the preconcentration. It was also re-examined that the Langmuir's adsorption isotherm pattern well obeyed by all ions under investigation. In recent years, significant amounts of rare earth compounds and other raw materials containing representative elements have been imported and consumed to meet the demand due to the rapid progress in new manufacturing technology. Samples were collected from ten various production lines in plants and potential pollutants were determined using the Tsing Hua Open-pool Reactor. It would be noteworthy that the specimens obtained by this preconcentration process also would be usable for Induced Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry analysis for supplementary and/or comparison purposes.

Notes: Many engineering structures completely surround and enclose gas filled volumes. The enclosed gas adds additional stiffness to the surrounding structure. This paper shows how to account for this effect by means of an augmented virtual work principle. The additional term augmenting the virtual work equilibrium statement for the structure is the virtual boundary work done by the pressure of the enclosed gas. The augmented equations are discretized using standard finite element methods, and the additional terms are discussed. The resulting ‘pneumatic’ finite element is shown to be analogous to regular structural finite elements. To assess the accuracy and efficiency and also to illustrate the applicability of the present formulation, a series of four examples was selected. In two of the examples, the behaviour of the end cap of a partially filled plastic food product container is studied. The numerical results using the pneumatic element compare well with an alternative Rayleigh-Ritz solution of the end cap behaviour. The other two examples represent the behaviour of a double bellows air spring shock absorber under static isothermal and dynamic adiabatic conditions. For the static isothermal case, an experimental study was performed with results in good agreement with the pneumatic element solutions. For the dynamic adiabatic loading case, the dynamic stiffness of the air spring was predicted using the pneumatic element. The numerical results agree with experimental data published in an air spring application guide. The examples illustrate that the pneumatic element formulation can be applied to the large deflection analysis of structures that enclose gas filled volumes.
