    Notes: We have implemented an amplitude and phase modulated laser pulse of the form [sech(αt)]1+3i. Such a pulse shape creates uniform population inversion within a selected bandwidth, compensates for Rabi frequency inhomogeneity, and leaves transitions outside the bandwidth unaffected. The unique features of this pulse shape are verified by measuring total fluorescence in iodine vapor as a function of laser power.

    Notes: An improved and more reliable method for the analysis of the electron spin stimulated echo modulation in randomly oriented solids is presented. In this method the uncertainty in the decay function of the spin echo modulation envelope is largely eliminated by dividing modulation traces of various τ in the three pulse spin echo measurements. A nonlinear least squares fit procedure is then used to determine the hyperfine couplings. We have applied this method to determine the isotropic and the anisotropic hyperfine coupling constants of the 15N nuclei in the bacteriochlorophyll a radical cation. In our model the hyperfine tensors of four nitrogen nuclei are assumed to be axially symmetric and parallel to each other. The results are consistent with the reported values obtained by the electron nuclear double resonance technique.

    Notes: While short compressive stresses can readily be produced by laser ablation, the generation of pure tensile stresses is more difficult. We demonstrate that a 90° prism made of polyethylene can serve to produce short and pure tensile stresses. A compressive wave is generated by ablating a thin layer of strongly absorbing ink on one surface of the prism with a Q-switched frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser. The compressive wave driven into the prism is reflected as a tensile wave by the polyethylene-air interface at its long surface. The low acoustic impedance of polyethylene makes it ideal for coupling tensile stresses into liquids. In water, tensile stresses up to −200 bars with a rise time of the order of 20 ns and a duration of 100 ns are achieved. The tensile strength of water is determined for pure tensile stresses lasting for 100 ns only. The technique has potential application in studying the initiation of cavitation in liquids and in comparing the effect of compressive and tensile stress transients on biological media. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The electron spin echo modulation spectrum of organic radicals in randomly oriented solids is analyzed in detail for axially symmetric hyperfine tensors. Numerical calculations of the modulation spectra are compared with experimental results from the radical cations of 15N labeled bacteriochlorophyll a and the primary donor of photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum. Determination of hyperfine coupling constants from experimental spectra in the frequency domain is complicated by the anisotropy of modulation intensity, the effects of second and higher order hyperfine interactions, overlapping spectra from several nuclei, multiple quantum coherences among hyperfine levels, and the spectrometer deadtime. Nonlinear least-squares analysis of the time domain data [Tang et al., J. Chem. Phys. 83, 4197 (1985)] is the only reliable method for extracting coupling constants from randomly oriented organic radicals.

    Notes: Abstract Acute trauma or trauma associated with occlusal disharmony can produce tooth crack or fracture. Although several methods are proposed to treat the defect, however, the prognosis is generally poor. If the fusion of a tooth fracture by laser is possible it will offer an alternative to extraction or at least serve as an adjunctive treatment in the reconstruction. The responses of soft tissues to lasers of different wavelengths are fairly well known, but the reactions of hard tissues are still to be understood. The purpose of this research was to study the feasibility of using a medium energy continuous-wave CO2 laser and a low melting-point bioactive glass to fuse or bridge tooth fractures. The present report is focused on the first part of the research, the analysis of changes in laser-irradiated human tooth enamel/dentin by means of X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier-transforming infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetric analysis (DTA/TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After CO2 laser irradiation, there were no marked changes in the X-ray diffraction pattern of the enamel when compared to that before laser treatment. However, a small peak belonging to α-TCP appeared at the position of 2θ=30.78°C. After being treated with CO2 laser, the dentin showed much sharper peaks on the diffraction patterns because of grain growth and better crystallinity. α-TCP and β-TCP were identified after laser treatment. In the FTIR analysis, an HPO4 -2 absorption band was noted before laser treatment disappeared after the irradiation. No significant change in the absorption band of HPO4 -2 was found on the FTIR curves of enamel after laser treatment. The results of DTA/TGA indicated that loss of water and organic materials occurred in both enamel and dentin after laser treatment. Under SEM, melting and resolidification occurred in both enamel and dentin by medium energy of CO2 laser. This implies that using a continuous-wave CO2 laser of medium energy density to fuse a low melting-point bioactive glass to the enamel/dentin is possible. We believe these phase changes and thermal data can make a useful guide for future studies on the thermal interaction and bridging mechanism between the bioactive glass and enamel/dentin under CO2 laser irradiation. © 2000 Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Notes: Abstract We have constructed a chimeric protein composed of the receptor binding and membrane translocation domains of Pseudomonas exotoxin A (PE) with the outer membrane proteins I and F, together designated as PEIF. The potential of PEIF as a vaccine against Pseudomonas infection was evaluated in BALB/c mice and New Zealand white rabbits. We examined titers of anti-PE and anti-OprF antibodies, and the ability both to neutralize PE cytotoxicity and to increase opsonophagocytic uptake of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PAO1, serogroups 2 and 6. The results showed that PEIF can induce antibodies not only to neutralize the PE cytotoxicity but also to promote the uptake of various strains of P. aeruginosa by murine peritoneal macrophages. In a burned mouse model, PEIF afforded significant protection against infection by the homologous P. aeruginosa strain PAO1, heterologous serogroup 2, and the PE hyperproducing strain PA103. These observations thus indicate that PEIF may be used as a novel vaccine against P. aeruginosa infection.

    Notes: Abstract An attempt was made to establish a reliable method using chemical neutron activation analysis for surveillance of pollutants in waste waters released by plants manufacturing various kinds of products. Since preconcentration process played important role in the entire course of the analysis work, special precaution was taken to re-confirm that the recovery efficiencies for pollutant ions were satisfactory during the preconcentration. It was also re-examined that the Langmuir's adsorption isotherm pattern well obeyed by all ions under investigation. In recent years, significant amounts of rare earth compounds and other raw materials containing representative elements have been imported and consumed to meet the demand due to the rapid progress in new manufacturing technology. Samples were collected from ten various production lines in plants and potential pollutants were determined using the Tsing Hua Open-pool Reactor. It would be noteworthy that the specimens obtained by this preconcentration process also would be usable for Induced Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry analysis for supplementary and/or comparison purposes.

    Notes: Abstract In recent years chances of using rhenium-186 and rhenium-188 as radioactive isotopes in diagnostic and therapeutic applications are increased very much due to the characteristic radiochemical and chemical properties of these two radioisotopes. In particular, chemical similarities between99Tc and99mTc pair and186Re and188Re pair make it easier to correlate the two groups of compounds. Rhenium-188 is generated from the beta-decay of tungsten-188 which was produced by double neutron capture on enriched tungsten-186 oxide. It is of great interest to examine the impurities in the eluate by radiochemical neutron activation. For this purpose, the preconcentration of the impurities in samples were necessary, and it was achieved by adsorption on hydrated magnesium oxide.
