    Stability of beryllium-doped compositionally graded and abrupt AlInAs/GaInAs heterojunction bipolar transistors (1993)

    Notes: Stability of base-emitter (BE) junction characteristics and dc current gain is analyzed for high-performance AlInAs/GaInAs heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). HBT devices with heavily beryllium-doped base layers were stressed with a constant collector current at elevated temperatures (180 and 208 °C). Devices with compositionally abrupt and graded BE junctions were compared. The compositionally abrupt devices showed signs of significant Be diffusion under bias stress (i.e., drift in turn-on voltage and drop in dc current gain). The graded junction devices, however, remained extremely stable under bias stress. The compositional grading at the BE junction was accomplished by a nine-period AlInAs/GaInAs superlattice and is believed to be responsible for the stability of the graded devices.

    Notes: The evaluation of strategic alternatives is a particularly difficult task. This difficulty is due to the complexities inherent in the evaluation process and the lack of structured information. The evaluation process must consider a multitude of relevant information from both the internal and external environments of the organization. Various analytical and normative models have helped decision makers utilize large volumes of information in strategic evaluation; however, most of these models have some limitations. We present a multiple criteria decision support system, called strategic assessment model (SAM), that addresses some of the limitations inherent in the existing models. SAM captures the decision maker's beliefs through a series of sequential, rational, and analytical processes. The environmental forces—decomposed into internal, task, general opportunities, and threats—are used along with the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), subjective probabilities, the entropy concept, and utility theory to enhance the decision maker's intuition in evaluating a set of strategic alternatives.

    Notes: The total quality index (TQI) proposed in this study is an information technology-supported benchmarking tool that helps managers assess a total quality management program by enabling the cost-effective measurement of key organizational processes. TQI utilizes the analytic hierarchy process and the Delphi technique to measure ideal and actual quality management along eight critical factors synthesized by Saraph et al. and supported by subsequent research. A study utilizing TQI was conducted to evaluate the progress of quality management in clinical and non-clinical settings. Eight clinical and six non-clinical departments were selected from four different hospitals to participate in this study. The results show that, contrary to the common beliefs, there is little difference in the actual and ideal scores on the eight critical factors between the clinical and non-clinical settings.

    Notes: Technology assessment is a difficult task at the Mission Control Center (MCC). The difficulty is inherent in the unavailability of structured information and exacerbated by the lack of a systematic assessment process. New technology deployment to the MCC requires testing and certification in three labs: Quest 1, 2, and 3. The Mission Control Center Systems (MCCS) architecture team, a multidisciplinary group of MCC experts and scientists is chartered to redefine the next generation of MCCS by developing a systematic process to assess and certify new technologies. Quest 123 is a benchmarking tool that was successfully implemented at the Johnson Space Center to assess and certify new technology initiatives for each lab before final deployment to the MCC. Quest 123 integrates the analytic hierarchy process with an additive multi-criteria decision-making model into a dynamic benchmarking framework.

We compare simultaneous versus sequential moves in R&D decisions within an asymmetric R&D/Cournot model with linear demand (for differentiated products), general R&D costs, and spillovers. Simultaneous play and sequential play (with and without a specified leader) can emerge as appropriate formulations, depending on the ratios of spillover rate over demand cross-slope, but not on R&D efficiency. When at least one ratio is above 1/2, a sequential solution mitigates competition and leads to higher profits for each firm, and to higher social welfare. When uniquely specified, the stronger firm emerges as the R&D first-mover.

    Notes: Abstract. We present here an evolutionary game model, and address the issue of equilibrium selection working with the scale function of a diffusion process describing the dynamics of population processes with mutation modeled as white noise. This model is the same as the one in Foster and Young (1990) but with a different interpretation at the boundaries and with different mutation modelings. First, we justifiably assume that the boundaries of the solution of the stochastic differential equation are absorbing so that the first boundary of the interval [0,1] hit will determine the equilibrium selected. Then, working with the scale function, we obtain for 2×2 symmetric games and different mutation parameters, some new and interesting equilibrium selection results. The aim of this article is to describe another method of approach in evolutionary games with mutation which we believe will prove to be very useful in studying more general normal form games and different mutation modelings.

    Notes: An efficient formulation is presented to predict the buckling under combined loading of relatively long shear deformable laminated anisotropic plates. The numerical formulation is based on a semi-analytical Reissner-Mindlin ‘infinite’ strip. The effect of shear locking is eliminated by the use of higher Lagrangian polynomials. The deterioration of Kirchhoff theory (classical plate theory (CPT)) in the case of moderately thick anisotropic plate is highlighted. A complete convergence study of the present theory was carried out and the accuracy of the method is demonstrated by comparison with the published results.
