    Notizen: Abstract The application of a novel time-resolved confocal fluorescence microspectrometer to studies of the distribution and speciation of porphyrin photosensitizers in rat C6 cerebral glioma cells is described. The instrument combines a mode-locked argon ion laser excitation source with time-correlated single photon counting fluorescence detection and has sub-micron spatial and sub-nanosecond temporal resolution. The porphyrins studied were haematoporphyrin derivative (HpD), haematoporphyrin IX (HP), porphyrinc (Pc) and the tetrakiscarborane carboxylate ester of 2,4-(α,β-dihydroxyethyl) deuteroporphyrin IX (BOPP). From the heterogeneous emission observed in vitro, assignments and spatial location of various porphyrin species are proposed.

    Notizen: Abstract Nymphal development of Cacopsylla moscovita (And.) (Homoptera: Psylloidea) takes place only on female catkins of Salix repens L. and close phenological synchrony is crucial because development times of catkins and nymphs are similar. Eggs are laid on catkins as soon as they develop and close synchrony between oviposition and budburst maximizes time available for nymphal development. Sampling adult C. moscovita in the field revealed little synchrony between egg development and budburst, with over 60% of females containing mature eggs four weeks before catkins first appeared. In the laboratory, egg development was influenced by both temperature and photoperiod. At 10°C, egg development occurred approximately one month earlier than at 5°C and two weeks earlier than in the field. Adult survival in the laboratory was substantially reduced at increased temperature, with only 20% of adults surviving longer than two weeks at 10°C, compared with over 95% at 5°C. Body condition (weight corrected for size) of males and females decreased significantly in the field over winter. However, body condition of females levelled off before budburst, coincident with egg development implying that females had resumed feeding. We discuss our results in relation to regulation of phenological synchrony between oviposition and catkin appearance.

    Notizen: Abstract SW UMa is an unusual dwarf nova in several respects. Recent observations by Robinsonet al. (1986) have established that SW UMa is an SU UMa system, while Shafter, Szkody, and Thorstensen (1986) have presented evidence suggesting that SW UMa may be a DQ Her system as well. If the DQ Her classification is confirmed then SW UMa will be the only system to have this dual classification. Finally, time resolved spectroscopy of SW UMa has revealed the presence of an S-wave component in the Hα emission which has an unexpected phasing relative to the line wings.

    Notizen: Abstract Fine grained gabbroic chilled margins and crosscutting dikes are associated in space and time with three ca. 1400 Ma anorthositic plutons in the Flowers River area, southeastern Nain igneous complex. Both the anorthositic and gabbroic rocks have distinctive compositions compared to rocks of similar age and lithology elsewhere in northcentral Labrador. The anorthositic rocks contain olivine and augite rather than orthopyroxene, and Fe-Ti oxides, apatite and orthoclase are unusually abundant. Cumulus plagioclase is abnormally enriched in incompatible elements. Most of the gabbroic rocks are uniform in composition, although the effects of contamination and fractionation are evident in some places. They define a transitional to alkalic ferrogabbro magma that is strongly enriched in K, P and incompatible trace elements. The chemical characteristics of the ferrogabbro magma imply derivation from enriched mantle or involvement of a significant crustal component. A parent-daughter relationship between the ferrogabbro magma and anorthositic rocks is suggested by their compositional similarities and the fact that the gabbroic chilled margins and plagioclase-rich pluton interiors appear to be completely gradational in composition and texture.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper describes the post-1883 history of volcanic disturbance to the islands Panjang and Sertung, within the Krakatau group, Indonesia. Historical data are reviewed briefly, together with previous stratigraphic and geochemical data. In 1989 six profiles of soils, ashes and buried soils were described and sampled on each island, along with two on Rakata and one (in Krakatau ash) on Sebesi island. The results of analyses of chemical, physical and particularly of mineral magnetic properties are presented, with the aim of assessing spatial variation in ash fall history across Panjang and Sertung. We take a multivariate approach to analysis of the mineral magnetic data (employing an agglomerative classification), which has proved highly informative as a means of characterising ash fall “events” separated by (in geological terms) very short intervals. Most sites on both islands showed evidence of a number of distinct ash-falls in both the early 1930s and 1952/53 periods, of a highly disruptive nature. These and other periods of ash-fall are summarised in tentative models put forward for each island. Sites nearest to Anak Krakatau typically contained evidence of the largest number of different ashes. The implications of these data for the biogeography of the group are briefly discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract We present autocorrelation measurements showing the high-speed sampling and switching capabilities of SOS photoconducting elements which have been ion implanted with 60 and 160 keV Si28 ions. An analysis of the circuit shows the intrinsic photoconductive decay to be very fast (∼3.5 ps) and that the measured response is primarily limited by the gap capacitance and the associated R-C time.

    Notizen: Abstract Samples were obtained from selected positions in the process stream of an experimental low Btu gasifier using a five-stage multicyclone train and a four-stage condenser train. These materials which represent potential fugitive emissions were screened for mutagenic activity (AmesSalmonella mammalian microsome mutagenicity assay) and forin vitro cytotoxicity (alveolar macrophages). Size-fractionated materials collected in the multicyclone train were mutagenic inSalmonella tester strains TA-98 and TA-100 and were also cytotoxic. There appeared to be no relationship between aerosol droplet size and mutagenic activity. Studies with condenser train samples indicate that neutral and basic polynuclear aromatic compounds contribute to the mutagenicity of process stream materials. Specific mutagenic and cytotoxic activity of material was reduced as gas underwent cleanup. A reduction in the mass loading of potentially toxic compounds is achieved by the control devices in the process stream of the experimental gasifier being developed and tested by METC, and assuming equal probability of emissions throughout the process stream, risk from exposure to potential fugitive emissions is reduced as the gas is cleaned.
