Description: We present a new dynamic dominant height growth model based on Cieszewski’s generalized algebraic difference approach (GADA) advanced dynamic site equation strengthened by the use of explicit climate and soil variables (i.e., H = f(H0,T0, T, site conditions)). The results suggest that the inclusion of climatic variables would improve the applicability of the inter-regional model in regions in which climate and soil type lead to intra-regional variability. The new model reduces the bias present in a previous dynamic model that did not include climatic attributes and improves the model efficiency across the different age classes. Climate has a multiplicative effect on dominant tree growth in the early development stages (

Description: Intraannual features or anomalies in the tree rings of woody species may provided useful information for ecological and climatological studies. The frequency of intraannual density fluctuations (IADFs), differences in IADFs according to the cambial age, changes in IADFs in the last century, and relationships of IADFs to radial growth and climate were analyzed in five stands of Pinus pinaster subsp. mesogeensis (Fieschi & Gaussen) Silba in east-central Spain. Standard dendrochronological techniques were used. Two cores were extracted 1.30 m above ground level from 15 dominant and codominant trees at each sampling site. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation, and logistic regression. Results showed that (i) the mean frequency of IADFs was higher in younger than older trees; (ii) the frequency of IADFs increased from the 1940s to the present; (iii) radial growth was negatively correlated with the presence of IADFs; and (iv) density fluctuations may be predicted by using a logistic model, with monthly rainfall and temperature as independent variables. Studies of intraannual features or anomalies in radial growth may be useful for ecological and climatological applications under forecasted climate change scenarios.

Description: The evolution of insect resistance threatens the effectiveness of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins that are widely used in sprays and transgenic crops. Resistance to Bt toxins in some insects is linked with mutations that disrupt a toxin-binding cadherin protein. We show that susceptibility to the Bt toxin Cry1Ab was reduced by cadherin gene silencing with RNA interference in Manduca sexta, confirming cadherin's role in Bt toxicity. Native Cry1A toxins required cadherin to form oligomers, but modified Cry1A toxins lacking one alpha-helix did not. The modified toxins killed cadherin-silenced M. sexta and Bt-resistant Pectinophora gossypiella that had cadherin deletion mutations. Our findings suggest that cadherin promotes Bt toxicity by facilitating toxin oligomerization and demonstrate that the modified Bt toxins may be useful against pests resistant to standard Bt toxins.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Soberon, Mario -- Pardo-Lopez, Liliana -- Lopez, Idalia -- Gomez, Isabel -- Tabashnik, Bruce E -- Bravo, Alejandra -- 1R01 AI066014/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2007 Dec 7;318(5856):1640-2. Description: Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during the past 3.7 years, we demonstrated a correlation between the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energy above 6 x 10(19) electron volts and the positions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) lying within approximately 75 megaparsecs. We rejected the hypothesis of an isotropic distribution of these cosmic rays with at least a 99% confidence level from a prescribed a priori test. The correlation we observed is compatible with the hypothesis that the highest-energy particles originate from nearby extragalactic sources whose flux has not been substantially reduced by interaction with the cosmic background radiation. AGN or objects having a similar spatial distribution are possible sources.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Pierre Auger Collaboration -- Abraham, J -- Abreu, P -- Aglietta, M -- Description: Simple numerical methods that allow to obtain stress and strain paths in sand during self-boring pressuremeter tests are presented in this paper. The material is considered to undergo deformation in drained and plane-strain conditions. The flow rules of Rowe, Cambridge-type (Cam clay and Nova) model, and the sawtooth model are used in the analysis. Elastic strains are also considered in relation with the flow rule of Rowe. The proposed approach has been evaluated using a reference pressuremeter test performed on Ticino sand in a calibration chamber. The results indicate that the stress–strain–volume change responses of the sand predicted by the various models are quite similar, with and without consideration of the elastic strain components.
