    Notes: Purpose - The quality of crystals grown in space can be diversely affected by the melt flows induced by g-jitter associated with a space vehicle. This paper presents a full three-dimensional (3D) transient finite element analysis of the complex fluid flow and heat and mass transfer phenomena in a simplified Bridgman crystal growth configuration under the influence of g-jitter perturbations and magnetic fields. Design/methodology/approach - The model development is based on the Galerkin finite element solution of the magnetohydrodynamic governing equations describing the thermal convection and heat and mass transfer in the melt. A physics-based re-numbering algorithm is used to make the formidable 3D simulations computationally feasible. Simulations are made using steady microgravity, synthetic and real g-jitter data taken during a space flight. Findings - Numerical results show that g-jitter drives a complex, 3D, time dependent thermal convection and that velocity spikes in response to real g-jitter disturbances in space flights, resulting in irregular solute concentration distributions. An applied magnetic field provides an effective means to suppress the deleterious convection effects caused by g-jitter. Based on the simulations with applied magnetic fields of various strengths and orientations, the magnetic field aligned with the thermal gradient provides an optimal damping effect, and the stronger magnetic field is more effective in suppressing the g-jitter induced convection. While the convective flows and solute transport are complex and truly 3D, those in the symmetry plane parallel to the direction of g-jitter are essentially two-dimensional (2D), which may be approximated well by the widely used 2D models. Originality/value - The physics-based re-numbering algorithm has made possible the large scale finite element computations for 3D g-jitter flows in a magnetic field. The results indicate that an applied magnetic field can be effective in suppressing the g-jitter driven flows and thus enhance the quality of crystals grown in space.

    Notes: The thermal stabilities and mechanical interfacial properties of a diglycidyl ether ofbisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy resin modified with different contents of polyethersulfone (PES) have been investigated.     Notes: Because of the control complexity of the Parallel Kinematic Machines (PKMs), suchmechanisms may suffer from lack of accuracy at high speed. Unfortunately, conventional motioncontrollers have very limited flexibility because they are designed for Cartesian coordinates.Therefore, the motion control system for PKMs with both high performance and open architectureis urgently demanded. In this paper, an open architecture control system for PKMs based onmulti-DSP parallel procession is presented. Then, the hierarchical distributed control strategy isdiscussed in details. In addition, the realization of an interactive communication interface amongDSP processors is presented. According to the testing results, the developed system is capable ofobtaining an interpolation sampling period at least 3 times faster than that could be offered by mostcontrollers based on single-DSP, thus it is available for high-speed and high-accuracy control ofPKMs

    Notes: The present research concerns mechanism and rate of reaction between dissolved ozone and phenol in homogeneous solutions. The stopped-flow technique was employed to obtain absorbances during reactions; the kinetic experiments were conducted at temperatures varying from 5° to 35°C in aqueous solutions with pH values ranging from 1.5 to 5.2.The kinetic data indicated that the absorbance of a mixed solution increased rapidly in the very early portion of the reaction and then declined slowly in the remaining period. The rate of reaction in the early period was first order with respect to both phenol and ozone concentrations. The rate constant increased with pH value and temperature, and an activation energy of 5.74 K cal/mole was obtained. Further tests showed that the dissolved ozone was consumed completely in the first period and that in the second period the intermediate products were decomposed without depletion of ozone. Catechol, o-quinone, hydroquinone, oxalic acid, humic acid, and a dimer were identified from mass spectra as products of the ozonization reaction.A free radical mechanism, with initiation of an electrophilic reaction for the formation of catechyl radical, has been proposed to explain the experimental data for phenol-ozone reaction in aqueous solutions. According to the proposed mechanism, the reaction path through the attachment to ortho position is much more favorable compared with that through the paraposition because of geometric advantage, though quinones and hydroxyphenol can be formed through parallel paths. The products of reaction detected in this research, therefore, are accountable by this mechanism. A rate equation derived on the basis of this mechanism also agrees well with that observed from the kinetic experiments.
