Description: The Larderello geothermal field is located ca. 100 km southeast of Florence, in the northern part of a volcanic zone that extends along the Italian Tyrrhenian coast. Geophysical investigations in the area suggest a crustal thinning and an injection of hot material from the upper mantle into the crust.

Notes: In the solvent contrast variation technique, the structure factor is a linear function of contrast, and the intensity is therefore a parabolic function of contrast. A method has been developed which scales together data measured at different contrasts on different samples. Once the data are scaled, structure-factor amplitudes or intensities for any other contrast can be obtained by inter- (or extra-)polation. The magnitude of the relative phase change between contrast, an important piece of phasing information in single-crystal studies, can be determined.

Notes: Short-range order parameters were obtained for a single crystal of 62Ni3Fe quenched from above Tc. These are the first absolute measurements of diffuse elastic neutron scattering complete enough to separate the effects of local order and atomic displacements (up to quadratic terms) and indicate that neutrons are ideally suited for such studies. The results are compared to those obtained with X-rays. The short-range order intensity of Ni3Fe is similar in shape to that for Cu3Au but in this alloy it is due to the plate-like nature of ordered domains, not the antiphase domain boundaries which are present in such regions in Cu3Au.

Notes: A data reduction system for neutron crystallography using a two-dimensional planar multidetector is described. The method is based on an a priori calculation of the intensity distribution for each reflection for any crystal orientation. The orientation matrix of the crystal has to be known. From the calculated intensity distribution a mask is derived for each reflection. The detection elements of the detector which are inside the mask are summed to determine the intensity of that reflection and the cells outside are used to determine the background. The size of the mask is adapted to the relative height of the measured intensity of the reflector compared to the background. The theoretical intensity distribution for each reflection is calculated in reciprocal space from the primary-beam divergence and wavelength spread and the crystal mosaic spread, on the basis of the kinematic theory of diffraction. The derivation of the necessary equations, i.e. the determination of the resolution function of the instrument, is presented. Some typical results of data collection are also presented. The advantages of this data collection method are the safe determination of weak reflections, the easy discrimination of reflections which nearly overlap, the determination of crystal mosaic spread, and the discrimination of inelastic scattering in the proximity of intense reflections.

Notes: The efficiency of aircraft and industrial gas turbines and combustion engines depends onthe maximum operation temperature and, therefore, on the properties of the commercial hightemperature materials. In the temperature range 500°C to 750°C γ-titanium aluminides especiallyalloys of the third generation represent an attractive alternative to the established nickel-basesuperalloys which have the double density. Due to superimposed cyclic thermal and cyclicmechanical loadings during start-up and shut-down operations structural components in gas turbinesand combustion engines may not only be exposed to isothermal but also to thermo-mechanical fatigue(TMF). In this study the cyclic deformation and fatigue behaviour under thermo-mechanical load ofthe γ-TiAl alloy TNB-V5 with near-gamma microstructure is evaluated. To set a fatigue-life relationstrain-controlled thermo-mechanical fatigue tests were carried out with two different strain ranges, different temperature-strain cycles and different temperature ranges from 400°C to 800°C. Additionallow-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were performed at 400°C, 600°C and 800°C for comparison. Cyclicdeformation curves, stress-strain hysteresis loops and fatigue lives of the tests are presented. Theshortest fatigue lives are always observed in out-of phase (OP) tests, the longest in in-phase (IP) tests.Clockwise-diamond (CD) and counter-clockwise diamond (CCD) testing yield similar fatigue livesintermediate between those of OP and IP tests. For a general life prediction the double-logarithmicplot of the damage parameter by Smith, Watson and Topper vs. fatigue life is well suitable

Notes: Abstract A girl with mental retardation had a partial trisomy 4q. The chromosome aberration originated from a maternal balanced translocation t(4;13)(q26;q34). The value for Factor X was half the normal value, raising the question of the location of a gene related to the production of Factor X on chromosome 4.

Notes: Summary A 46,XX or XY,r(22) mosaicism was discovered in five patients of a family with a range of dysplastic features from mild and nonspecific without mental retardation to more distinctive with mental retardation. The 22 ring chromosome was segregating in three generations.

Notes: Summary The recent discovery that the extra chromosome in about 30% of cases of 47, trisomy 21 is of paternal origin has revived interest in the possibility of paternal age as a risk factor for a Down syndrome birth, independent of maternal age. Parental age distribution for 611 Down's syndrome 47,+21 cases was studied. The mean paternal age was 0.16 year greater than in the entire population of live births after controlling for maternal age. There was no evidence for a significant paternal age effect at the 0.05 level. For 242 of these Down's syndrome cases, control subjects were selected by rigidly matching in a systematic manner. Paternal age was the variable studied, with maternal age and time and place of birth controlled. There was no statistically significant association between paternal age and Down's syndrome. After adjustment for maternal age, these two studies were not consistent with an increase of paternal age in Down's syndrome.
