Description: The expression of proto-oncogenes representative of several functional categories has been investigated during development of mouse male germ cells. The c-raf proto-oncogene and three members of the c-ras gene family were expressed in mitotically active stem cells, throughout the prophase of meiosis and to varying extents in post-meiotic cell types. In contrast, the nuclear proto-oncogenes c-fos, c-jun, and c-myc were specifically expressed at high levels in type B spermatogonia. High levels of c-myc and c-jun RNAs were also detected in spermatocytes early in the prophase of meiosis. The type B spermatogonia represent the last mitotic cell division before entry into meiotic prophase; therefore, these nuclear proto-oncogenes may be involved in altering programs of gene expression at this developmental transition.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Wolfes, H -- Kogawa, K -- Millette, C F -- Cooper, G M -- CA 21082/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA 28946/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- HD 15269/HD/NICHD NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1989 Aug 18;245(4919):740-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2475907" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Schizophrenia is a devastating neurodevelopmental disorder whose genetic influences remain elusive. We hypothesize that individually rare structural variants contribute to the illness. Microdeletions and microduplications 〉100 kilobases were identified by microarray comparative genomic hybridization of genomic DNA from 150 individuals with schizophrenia and 268 ancestry-matched controls. All variants were validated by high-resolution platforms. Novel deletions and duplications of genes were present in 5% of controls versus 15% of cases and 20% of young-onset cases, both highly significant differences. The association was independently replicated in patients with childhood-onset schizophrenia as compared with their parents. Mutations in cases disrupted genes disproportionately from signaling networks controlling neurodevelopment, including neuregulin and glutamate pathways. These results suggest that multiple, individually rare mutations altering genes in neurodevelopmental pathways contribute to schizophrenia.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Walsh, Tom -- McClellan, Jon M -- McCarthy, Shane E -- Addington, Anjene M -- Pierce, Sarah B -- Cooper, Greg M -- Nord, Alex S -- Kusenda, Mary -- Malhotra, Dheeraj -- Bhandari, Abhishek -- Stray, Sunday M -- Rippey, Caitlin F -- Roccanova, Patricia -- Makarov, Vlad -- Lakshmi, B -- Findling, Robert L -- Sikich, Linmarie -- Stromberg, Thomas -- Merriman, Barry -- Gogtay, Nitin -- Butler, Philip -- Eckstrand, Kristen -- Noory, Laila -- Gochman, Peter -- Long, Robert -- Chen, Zugen -- Davis, Sean -- Baker, Carl -- Eichler, Evan E -- Meltzer, Paul S -- Nelson, Stanley F -- Singleton, Andrew B -- Lee, Ming K -- Rapoport, Judith L -- King, Mary-Claire -- Sebat, Jonathan -- HD043569/HD/NICHD NIH HHS/ -- M01 RR000046/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- MH061355/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- MH061464/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- MH061528/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- NS052108/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- R01 HD043569/HD/NICHD NIH HHS/ -- RR000046/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- RR025014/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- U01 MH061355/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- U01 MH061464/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- U01 MH061528/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- U24 NS052108/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- UL1 RR025014/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- Howard Hughes Medical Institute/ -- Intramural NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2008 Apr 25;320(5875):539-43. doi: 10.1126/science.1155174. Description: Sampling an intact sequence of oceanic crust through lavas, dikes, and gabbros is necessary to advance the understanding of the formation and evolution of crust formed at mid-ocean ridges, but it has been an elusive goal of scientific ocean drilling for decades. Recent drilling in the eastern Pacific Ocean in Hole 1256D reached gabbro within seismic layer 2, 1157 meters into crust formed at a superfast spreading rate. The gabbros are the crystallized melt lenses that formed beneath a mid-ocean ridge. The depth at which gabbro was reached confirms predictions extrapolated from seismic experiments at modern mid-ocean ridges: Melt lenses occur at shallower depths at faster spreading rates. The gabbros intrude metamorphosed sheeted dikes and have compositions similar to the overlying lavas, precluding formation of the cumulate lower oceanic crust from melt lenses so far penetrated by Hole 1256D.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Wilson, Douglas S -- Teagle, Damon A H -- Alt, Jeffrey C -- Banerjee, Neil R -- Umino, Susumu -- Miyashita, Sumio -- Acton, Gary D -- Anma, Ryo -- Barr, Samantha R -- Belghoul, Akram -- Carlut, Julie -- Christie, David M -- Coggon, Rosalind M -- Cooper, Kari M -- Cordier, Carole -- Crispini, Laura -- Durand, Sedelia Rodriguez -- Einaudi, Florence -- Galli, Laura -- Gao, Yongjun -- Geldmacher, Jorg -- Gilbert, Lisa A -- Hayman, Nicholas W -- Herrero-Bervera, Emilio -- Hirano, Nobuo -- Holter, Sara -- Ingle, Stephanie -- Jiang, Shijun -- Kalberkamp, Ulrich -- Kerneklian, Marcie -- Koepke, Jurgen -- Laverne, Christine -- Vasquez, Haroldo L Lledo -- Maclennan, John -- Morgan, Sally -- Neo, Natsuki -- Nichols, Holly J -- Park, Sung-Hyun -- Reichow, Marc K -- Sakuyama, Tetsuya -- Sano, Takashi -- Sandwell, Rachel -- Scheibner, Birgit -- Smith-Duque, Chris E -- Swift, Stephen A -- Tartarotti, Paola -- Tikku, Anahita A -- Tominaga, Masako -- Veloso, Eugenio A -- Yamasaki, Toru -- Yamazaki, Shusaku -- Ziegler, Christa -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 May 19;312(5776):1016-20.
