    Notes: Abstract An isologous diversification theory for cell differentiation is proposed, based on simulations of interacting cells with biochemical networks and the cell division process following consumption of some chemicals. According to the simulations of the interaction-based dynamical systems model, the following scenario of the cell differentiation is proposed. (1) Up to some threshold number, divisions bring about almost identical cells with synchronized biochemical oscillations. (2) As the number is increased, the oscillations lose synchrony, leading to groups of cells with different phases of oscilaations. (3) Amplitudes of oscillation and averaged chemical compositions start to differ by groups of cells. The differentiated behavior of states is transmitted to daughter cells. (4) Recursivity is formed so that the daughter cells keep the identical chemical character. This “memory” is made possible through the transfer of initial conditions. (5) Successive differentiation proceeds. The mechanism of tumor cell formation, origin of stem cells, anomalous differentiation by transplantations, apoptosis and other features of cell differentiation process are also discussed, with some novel predictions.

    Notes: Abstract A dynamic model for cell differentiation, where cells with internal chemical reaction dynamics interact with each other and replicate was studied. It led to spontaneous differentiation of cells and determination, as discussed in the isologous diversification. The following features of the differentiation were obtained: (1) hierarchical differentiation from a ’stem’ cell to other cell types, with the emergence of the interaction-dependent rules for differentiation; (2) global stability of an ensemble of cells consisting of several cell types, that were sustained by the emergent, autonomous control on the rate of differentiation; (3) existence of several cell colonies with different cell-type distributions. The results provide a novel viewpoint on the origin of a complex cell society, while relevance to some biological problems, especially to the hemopoietic system, is also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Electrolysis at the interface between a Na(AuCl4)–CuSO4 aqueous phase and an immiscible hexyl acetate phase resulted in continuous growth of gold films along the interface. To maintain filmy growth of gold, it was effective to stimulate displacement of predeposited copper with gold by applying a rectangular or triangular potential in a given range. Two types of electrodes were applied: from a point electrode the film grew concentrically like a blooming flower, and from a line electrode the film grew unidirectionally toward the counter electrode as a spreading wave. A long time electrolysis could be performed by circulating and filtering the aqueous solution. The film contained no trace of copper and was very thin (〈1μm).

    Notes: Abstract This paper provides a logic framework for investigations of game theoretical problems. We adopt an infinitary extension of classical predicate logic as the base logic of the framework. The reason for an infinitary extension is to express the common knowledge concept explicitly. Depending upon the choice of axioms on the knowledge operators, there is a hierarchy of logics. The limit case is an infinitary predicate extension of modal propositional logic KD4, and is of special interest in applications. In Part I, we develop the basic framework, and show some applications: an epistemic axiomatization of Nash equilibrium and formal undecidability on the playability of a game. To show the formal undecidability, we use a term existence theorem, which will be proved in Part II.

    Notes: Abstract The density of He adsorbed in the cylindrical micropores of zeolites NaY and KL has been determined by He adsorption at 4.2K. He adsorption isotherms were then compared with N2 adsorption isotherms at 77K. Crystallographic considerations of the micropore volumes gave the density of the He adsorbed layer, which is necessary for assessment of ultramicroporosity of less-crystalline microporous solids, such as activated carbons. The determined density of He adsorbed in the cylindrical micropores of the zeolite was in the range 0.22 to 0.26 gml−1, greater than that of He adsorbed on a flat surface (0.202 gml−1). A value for the density of He between 0.20 to 0.22 gml−1 is recommended for evaluation of ultramicroporosity of a slit-shaped microporous system such as activated carbon.

    Notes: Abstract Defective state of C60 crystals was controlled by the recrystallization and annealing. The defective structure was examined by the X-ray diffraction and N2 adsorption at 77 K. Recrystallized C60 crystals without annealing showed broad diffraction peaks and the N2 adsorption isotherm had marked low pressure uptake and a hysteresis in the high pressure region, indicating presence of both micropores and mesopores. The average micropore width was 8 Å which is closed to the C60 molecular size, while the average mesopore one was 50 Å. The mesopores disappeared by annealing up to 393 K. On the other hand micropores of 8 Å remained even by heating up to 673 K.

    Notes: Abstract Nitrogen adsorption isotherms for fluorinated activated carbon fiber (F-ACF) and fluorinated carbon black (F-CB) were measured at 77 K. Surface structures of F-ACF and F-CB were examined by α s -plot analysis using the adsorption data on the nonporous carbon black (CB) and F-CB. The surface energy of F-ACF was lower than that of ACF. The micropore structure of ACF was preserved even after fluorination, although the limiting adsorption amount and the micropore width decreased with fluorination.

    Notes: Abstract The supercritical gas adsorbed in the micropore having a strong molecular field was presumed to transform into the quasi-vapor to be filled in the micropore (quasi-vaporization adsorption mechanism). The Dubinin-Radushkevitch (DR) equation for micropore filling of vapor was extended to the quasi-vaporized supercritical gas using the quasi-saturated vapor pressureP 0 q and the inherent micropore volumeW L . The reason why the concepts ofP 0q andW L were introduced was explained with the molecule-pore interaction potential theory which is based on the Lennard-Jones interaction. The extended DR equation was named the supercritical DR equation. TheW L was evaluated by the Langmuir plot of the adsorption isotherm for a supercritical gas and both ofP 0q andW L provided the single reduced adsorption isotherms of supercritical NO, N2, and CH4 on activated carbon fibers and high surface area carbons were analyzed by the supercritical DR plots. The wide applicability of the reduced adsorption isotherm to these adsorption data was explicity shown. The two phase model of the organized and confined fluids was proposed in order to improve the quasi-vaporization adsorption mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract The detailed adsorption isotherms of nitrogen on carbon aerogels at 77 K were measured. The N2 adsorption isotherm had a marked hysteresis. The adsorption isotherms were analyzed by high resolution αs-plots to evaluate their porosity. The αs-plots showed an explicit upward deviation from the linearity below αs = 0.5, suggesting the presence of micropores. The mesoporosity and microporosity were separately determined from the αs-plot. The predominant pores in carbon aerogels were mesopores and the percentage of micropores was in the range of 5 to 10% of the total pore volume. The N2 adsorption hysteresis was analyzed with the Saam-Cole theory under the assumption of the cylindrical pore shape. The parameters determined from the Saam-Cole method were associated with the carbon aerogel structure.
