    Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology
Notes: Abstract The literature on the chemistry and application of pectins is reviewed. The principal themes are the search for nontraditional sources of pectins with novel structural elements and the deeper understanding of the structure and physicochemical properties of well studied pectins from traditional sources (apple, beet, citrus). Custom preparation of pectins with a desired set of properties that have practical application in medicine, biology and the food industry has been demonstrated. Chemical modification of pectins is a promising trend.

Notes: Abstract The addition of chromate to the leach liquor for the preparation of skeletal copper increases and stabilizes the copper surface area and slows the leaching rate. The kinetics have been studied using a rotating disc electrode (RDE) at 269–293 K in 2–8 M NaOH and 0–0.1 M Na2CrO4. The rate of leaching was found to be constant with time, with an activation energy of 74 ± 7 kJ mol−1. By monitoring the kinetics and free (mixed) corrosion potential, it was possible to elucidate the mechanistic effect of chromate causing the increased surface area. Chromate was found to deposit on the copper surface as chromium(III) oxide, hindering the leaching reaction as well as the dissolution/redeposition of copper, the main mechanism of structural formation/rearrangement for skeletal copper. This blocking of the surface resulted in a finer structure, with a corresponding larger surface area. It also stabilised the surface area by minimizing the rearrangement. The effect of chromate was found to reach a limit at around 0.03 M Na2CrO4.

    Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology
Notes: Abstract The structure of crab chitin and chitosan from it with various degrees of deacetylation (DDA) are studied by x-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and microscopy. Deacetylation causes substantial destruction of the chitin crystal structure, makes it amorphous, increases the defectiveness of crystallites as the DDA increases, weakens intermolecular H-bonds, and eliminates the fibrillarity.

Notes: Abstract Literature and characteristic experimental data correlated in the review concern the intramolecular cyclization by various means of substituted 1,5-diketones of the acyclic, semi-, and bicyclic series, proceeding to the formation of oxygen-containing heterocycles, such as pyrans, pyrylium salts, di- and tetrahydrofurans, and their condensed analogs, aroylfurans etc.

Notes: Abstract A concept of creation of a polymeric insert for hip joint endoprostheses with the physiological and biomechanical properties typical of natural cartilage is proposed. The spherical friction surface of the insert is coated with a microporous layer imitating cartilage. This layer carries an electret charge, which improves the lubrication of the endoprosthesis with synovia and serves as a carrier of drugs, thus ensuring their prolonged discharge into the operation wound. Tribotechnical characteristics of an endoprosthesis with such an insert are investigated. It is shown that a drop in the friction coefficient of such a pair is accompanied by a change in the microrelief of the friction surface and in the degree of crystallinity of the material of the porous layer.

Notes: Abstract Physical and physicochemical methods are used to study a blend based on industrial crab chitosan and polyvinylpyrrolidone over a wide composition range. Thermodynamic data indicate that this pair of polymers is compatible at certain component ratios. However, electron micrographs show that the polymeric layers are heterogeneous. The degree of heterogeneity is least at a 1:1 ratio
