Description / Table of Contents: The book contains methodical overview of the main groups of biological indicators used in palaeoecology: pollen, diatoms, chironomids larvae, cladocera, ostracods, sponges, some other less widely used groups of invertebrates and a review on application of pedohumic method for palaeoecological reconstructions. Articles contain information on systematics, morphology, biology of the selected proxy groups and the modern approaches to palaeoclimatic reconstructions. Applicability of the biological indicators is illustrated by case studies from different regions: steppe Altay and Altay mountains, central and northern Yakutia, Northern Ural, west Siberia, lake Baikal, Tien Shan mountains, Middle Volga, etc. The book can be interesting for specialists in palaeoecology and students.
Description / Table of Contents:

Description: Two-step laser acceleration of protons with two foils and two laser pulses is modelled and optimized. It is shown that a nearly mono-energetic distribution of proton bunches can be realized by a suitable parameter choice. Two-step acceleration schemes make it possible to obtain both higher efficiency and energy as compared to the acceleration with only one laser pulse of an energy equal to the sum of the energy of the two pulses. With the aid of our analytical model, the optimal distance between the two targets, the delay between the two laser pulses, and the parameters of the laser pulses are determined. Estimates and results of the modelling are proven with 2D PIC simulations of the acceleration of proton bunches moving through the second target.

Description: The reliability of Arctic climate predictions is currently hampered by insufficient knowledge of natural climate variability in the past. A sediment core from Lake El'gygytgyn in northeastern (NE) Russia provides a continuous, high-resolution record from the Arctic, spanning the past 2.8 million years. This core reveals numerous "super interglacials" during the Quaternary; for marine benthic isotope stages (MIS) 11c and 31, maximum summer temperatures and annual precipitation values are ~4 degrees to 5 degrees C and ~300 millimeters higher than those of MIS 1 and 5e. Climate simulations show that these extreme warm conditions are difficult to explain with greenhouse gas and astronomical forcing alone, implying the importance of amplifying feedbacks and far field influences. The timing of Arctic warming relative to West Antarctic Ice Sheet retreats implies strong interhemispheric climate connectivity.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Melles, Martin -- Brigham-Grette, Julie -- Minyuk, Pavel S -- Nowaczyk, Norbert R -- Wennrich, Volker -- DeConto, Robert M -- Anderson, Patricia M -- Andreev, Andrei A -- Coletti, Anthony -- Cook, Timothy L -- Haltia-Hovi, Eeva -- Kukkonen, Maaret -- Lozhkin, Anatoli V -- Rosen, Peter -- Tarasov, Pavel -- Vogel, Hendrik -- Wagner, Bernd -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Jul 20;337(6092):315-20. doi: 10.1126/science.1222135. Description: If regions of localized strong fields at plasma-vacuum interfaces are probed longitudinally with laser accelerated proton beams their velocity distribution changes sensitively and very fast. Its measured variations provide indirectly a higher temporal resolution as deduced from deflection geometries which rely on the explicit temporal resolution of the proton beam at the position of the object to probe. With help of reasonable models and comparative measurements changes of proton velocity can trace the field dynamics even at femtosecond time scale. In longitudinal probing, the very low longitudinal emittance together with a broad band kinetic energy distribution of laser accelerated protons is the essential prerequisite of the method. With a combination of energy and one-dimensional spatial resolution, we resolve fast field changes down to 100 fs. The used pump probe setup extends previous schemes and allows discriminating simultaneously between electric and magnetic fields in their temporal evolution.

Description: Here, we describe a source of high-power ultrawideband radiation with elliptical polarization. The source consisting of a monopolar pulse generator, a bipolar pulse former, and a helical antenna placed into a radioparent container may be used in tests for electromagnetic compatibility. In the source, the helical antenna with the number of turns N = 4 is excited with a high-voltage bipolar pulse. Preliminary, we examined helical antennas at a low-voltage source aiming to select an optimal N and to estimate a radiation center position and boundary of a far-field zone. Finally, characteristics of the source in the operating mode at a pulse repetition rate of 100 Hz are presented in the paper as well. Energy efficiency of the antenna is 0.75 at the axial ratio equal to 1.3. The effective potential of radiation of the source at the voltage amplitudes of the bipolar pulse generator equal to −175/+200 kV reaches 280 kV.
