    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung Die Nahrungsverwertung erwachsener weiblicher Wüstenheuschrecken wurde durch Feststellung des Gewichtes der verzehrten Nahrung, des Gewichtes der Exkremente und der Zunahme an Körpergewicht bestimmt. Während des somatischen Wachstums wird mehr Nahrung verzehrt als während des ersten gonotrophischen Zyklus, außerdem wird während dieser Zeitspanne intensiver Nahrungsaufnahme Kleie dem Salat vorgezogen. Im Salat stehen 35,0% des Trockengewichtes als Kohlenhydrat zur Verfügung, in der Kleie 56,2%. Die näherungsweise Verdauungsfähigkeit (approximate digestibility = A.D.) der Nahrungsmittel ist während des somatischen Wachstums besser als während der Eibildung, was auf den höheren Prozentsatz der leicht verdaulichen Kohlenhydrate in der Kleie im Vergleich zum Salat zurückzuführen sein mag. Die Wirksamkeit, mit welcher verzehrte Nahrung in Körpermasse umgewandelt wird (efficiency of conversion of ingested food = E.C.I.), und die Wirksamkeit, mit welcher verdaute Nahrung in Körpermasse umgewandelt wird (efficiency of conversion of digested food = E.C.D.) ist in beiden Fällen während des Eiwachstums größer als während des somatischen Wachstums. Der Proteinbedarf ist in beiden Wachstumsphasen ungefähr der gleiche, die Tiere verwerten jedoch während des somatischen Wachsums mehr Kohlenhydrate als während der Eibildung. Es wird darauf hingewiesen, daß die verdauten Kohlenhydrate während des somatischen Wachstums sowohl für die Bildung des in der Epidermis abgesetzten Chitins verwertet werden als auch für die Erzeugung von Energie für die Wachstumsvorgänge selbst. Der Grund für die Wahl der Kleie ist deshalb wohl auch die Versorgung mit leicht verfügbarem Kohlenhydrat ohne das Problem zusätzlicher Wasserbelastung, die durch das Verzehren großer Mengen von Salat entstehen würde.
    Notizen: Abstract Food utilisation has been estimated in the adult female desert locust by measurements of the weight of food ingested, the weight of faeces produced and the increase in body-weight. More food is eaten during somatic growth than during the first gonotrophic cycle; moreover, bran is eaten in preference to lettuce during this period of intense feeding. The amount of available carbohydrate in lettuce is 35% of the dry weight and that of bran is 56.2% of the dry weight. The approximate digestibility (A.D.) of the food is higher during somatic growth than during ovarian growth which may reflect the greater percentage of easily digestible carbohydrate in bran than lettuce. The efficiency of conversion of ingested food to body-substance (E.C.I.) and the efficiency of conversion of digested food to body-substance (E.C.D.) are both greater during ovarian growth than during somatic growth. The protein requirements of both growth phases are approximately the same, but the animals utilise more carbohydrate during somatic growth than during ovarian growth. It is suggested that the carbohydrate digested during somatic growth is channelled both into formation of the chitin deposited in the cuticle and into energy production for the growth processes themselves. Thus the choice of bran may well lie in the provisionof easily available carbohydrate without the problem of water loading which would be the case if large quantities of lettuce were consumed.

    Notizen: Abstract Applications are increasingly being executed on computational systems that have hierarchical parallelism. There are several programming paradigms which may be used to adapt a program for execution in such an environment. In this paper, we outline some of the challenges in porting codes to such systems, and describe a programming environment that we are creating to support the migration of sequential and MPI code to a cluster of shared memory parallel systems, where the target program may include MPI, OpenMP or both. As part of this effort, we are evaluating several experimental approaches to aiding in this complex application development task.

    Notizen: Abstract Active transport of calcium across the duodenum was measuredin vitro in rats growing normally and in rats during undernutrition and subsequent rehabilitation. In rats growing normally duodenal calcium transport was an inverse function of age and the length and mineral concentration of the femur. Duodenal calcium transport was reduced during undernutrition and was stimulated when the undernutrition was relieved. Calcium transport was not related to age nor to the size and composition of the femur during undernutrition and rehabilitation. Under all the conditions of the study calcium transport across the duodenum was a direct function of rate of growth. This finding supports the view that calcium absorption is related to the needs of the organism at the time. Duodenal calcium transport, which was reduced in slowly growing rats, both undernourished and not undernourished, could be stimulated with small amounts of 1,25-DHCC but not with large amounts of cholecalciferol or 25-HCC. These findings may suggest that the growth rate of the body has a bearing on the production of and or metabolism of 1,25-DHCC.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Résumé Les ressources microbiologiques en matière de cultures et de données sur les propriétés individuelles des souches sont considérables. Toutefois, l'accès à cette masse d'informations est encore très limité et nécessite des opérations manuelles. Au cours des dernières années, des informations computorisées sur les souches microbiennes ont été enrégistrées dans le monde entier par beaucoup de collections de cultures, dont certaines s'apprêtent à devenir des banques de données publiquement accessibles. Des études sur la possibilité de combiner ces banques de données sur la base de réseaux régionaux ont été entreprises, notamment dans les pays nordiques, le Royaume Uni, la Communauté Européene, le Japon et les USA. L'UNEP, la Communauté Européenne et le FNRS belge ont tenu à Bruxelles, en novembre 1983, une réunion internationale afin d'explorer la possibilité et le mode de fonctionnement d'un réseau mondial de données sur les souches microbiennes. Les participants ont constitué un groupe de travail et le projet a été patronné par CODATA et WFCC. Il a été essentiellement recommandé: (1) qu'un tel système mondial devrait être assez souple pour inclure à la fois des informations computorisées et non-computorisées; (2) que le système devrait être décentralisé; et (3) qu'il convient d'instituer un certain nombre de comités pour mettre en oeuvre le projet.
    Kurzfassung: Resumen Los recursos microbiológicos son muy extensos, si como tales consideramos las colecciones de cultivos y los conocimientos sobre sus propiedades almacenados en ficheros individuales. Sin embargo el acceso a toda esta información esta extraordinariamente limitado y se realiza generalmente de forma manual. En estos últimos años se han establecido bancos de datos computarizados describiendo cepas microbianas en centros de investigación y de conservación de colecciones de cultivos en todo el mundo. Algunos de ellos han sido ya diseñados para su conversión a bancos de datos de acceso público. En los países Nórdicos, los países miembros del mercado común, U.K., Japón y U.S.A.; se esta estudiando la posibilidad de reunir algunos de estos bancos de datos para formar una red regional. UNEP, CEC y FNRS de Bélgica patrocinaron en Noviembre 1983 una Reunión Internacional que tuvo lugar en Bruselas, con el fin de explorar las posibilidades y el modus operandi de un banco mundial de datos sobre cepas microbianas. Los participantes de la Reunión nombraron un grupo de trabajo y el proyecto ha sido a partir de entonces patrocinado por CODATA y WFCC. Las recomendaciones clave incluyen: (1) un sistema mundial debe ser lo suficientemente flexible para poder incluir información tanto computerizada como no computerizada; (2) el sistema ha de ser descentralizado; y (3) hay que constituir un cierto número de comités para implementar el proyecto.
    Notizen: Summary Microbial resources, in the form of preserved cultures and individual records of the properties of these, are very extensive. However, access to this mass of information is extremely limited and primarily a manual operation. In the last few years, computerized data bases describing microbial strains have been established in many service and research culture collections world-wide. Some of these are planned to become publicly accessible data banks. Active investigation of the possibility of combining some of these data banks into regional networks is underway in at least the Nordic Countries, the UK, the Common Market Countries, Japan and the USA. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), initiated, with further support from the Commission of the European Communities (CEC), and the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS) of Belgium, an international workshop in Brussels in November 1983 to explore the possibility and modus operandi of a world microbial strain data network. The workshop participants appointed a Working Group and the project has subsequently become sponsored by the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) and the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC). Key recommendations included: (1) a world system should have the flexibility to include non-computerized as well as computerized information; (2) the system should be distributed rather than be a single centralized data bank, and (3) a number of committees would have to be constituted to implement the project.

    Notizen: Abstract A total of 21 clinical isolates of Campylobacter pylori from Peru and the United Kingdom and two reference strains (from Australia), including the type strain (NCTC 11637T), were characterized by high resolution one-dimensional SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of cellular proteins. The protein patterns contained more than 40 discrete bands and the approximate molecular weights of the major bands were 22, 27, 46, 57, 60, 65 and 93 kD. The total patterns were used as the basis of numerical analysis. Most strains were clustered in four phenons at 91% similarity with the exception of six ungrouped strains. Overall similarity was high with all strains linked in the phenogram at ≥81%. Variation among strains was attributable principally to qualitative and quantitative band differences in the 47 to 56 kD (hypervariable) region of the C. pylori protein profile. From the analysis, ten different electropherotypes (EP-types) were identified. We demonstrated that differences were detectable among isolates from widely separated geographical locations as well as from the same location, although multiple isolates from two Peruvian patients had the same electropherotype. Our results indicate that determination of protein profiles provides the basis of a reproducible method for characterization of C. pylori isolates.

    Notizen: Abstract Large spoils of metal-rich filtercake from the Port Kembla BHP steelworks were characterised by certain physical, chemical and biological parameters. The vegetation was assessed for potential metal hyperaccumulators and the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizae in the rhizospheres. Fresh filtercake (〈2 yr old) was charcoal in colour and had a fine (clay loam) texture. Its composition was distinctly different to the older filtercake (3–4 yr) which was similar to the reference soil, being lighter in colour, loamy textured, more aggregated and with higher organic matter. Variability between the two filtercake types also occurred for electrical conductivity and pH. Total trace metal concentrations (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) were high and although only minor proportions were in bioavailable forms, the greater percentages in the older filtercake suggested temporal changes in metal speciation. Fresh filtercake was devoid of any plant life and fungal communities. The older material, however, was able to sustain a reasonable environment for plant, bacterial and fungal growth. The vegetation was dominated by Ricinus communis, along with species belonging to the families Asteraceae, Solanaceae, Malvaceae and Apiaceae. Rhizosphere of all these plants harboured mycorrhizae belonging to the Gigaspora and Glomus strains and while trace metal accumulation was observed no plant was a hyperaccumulator. The reference site was principally inhabited by certain Poaceae, Asteraceae and Verbenaceae species. All were mycorrhizal (principally Glomus strains), but no plant was represented on the contaminated site. Here also trace metal accumulation was taking place. The absence of hyperaccumulation in the filtercake was considered a consequence of low levels of bioavailable trace metals. However, as such metal forms may increase over time, particularly for copper and lead, cultivation of known hyperaccumulators could become worthwhile after prolonged exposure (〉4 yr). Among the naturally colonising plants, Ricinus communis and Sonchus oleraceus are regarded the most suitable options for zinc and cadmium removal, respectively. Arbuscular mycorrhizal infection (particularly with Glomus and Gigaspora strains) should be promoted for optimum soil reclamation.
