Description: We used high-resolution in situ measurements of turbidity and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) to quantitatively estimate the tidally driven exchange of mercury (Hg) between the waters of the San Francisco estuary and Browns Island, a tidal wetland. Turbidity and FDOM—representative of particle-associated and filter-passing Hg, respectively—together predicted 94 % of the observed variability in measured total mercury concentration in unfiltered water samples (UTHg) collected during a single tidal cycle in spring, fall, and winter, 2005–2006. Continuous in situ turbidity and FDOM data spanning at least a full spring-neap period were used to generate UTHg concentration time series using this relationship, and then combined with water discharge measurements to calculate Hg fluxes in each season. Wetlands are generally considered to be sinks for sediment and associated mercury. However, during the three periods of monitoring, Browns Island wetland did not appreciably accumulate Hg. Instead, gradual tidally driven export of UTHg from the wetland offset the large episodic on-island fluxes associated with high wind events. Exports were highest during large spring tides, when ebbing waters relatively enriched in FDOM, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and filter-passing mercury drained from the marsh into the open waters of the estuary. On-island flux of UTHg, which was largely particle-associated, was highest during strong winds coincident with flood tides. Our results demonstrate that processes driving UTHg fluxes in tidal wetlands encompass both the dissolved and particulate phases and multiple timescales, necessitating longer term monitoring to adequately quantify fluxes.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zwei Kartoffelsorten,Redskin undMajestic, wurden unter vier verschiedenen Bewässerungsverfahren kultiviert: 1. Keine Bewässerung. 2.
Notes: Summary Two varieties of potato,Redskin andMajestic, were grown with four water regimes;-unirrigated, irrigated before tuber formation, irrigated after tuber formation, and irrigated throughout the growing season. The damage done by slugs and the yields were measured. Both varieties suffered most damage from slugs when irrigated after the tubers started to form. MoreRedskin tubers were damaged thanMajestic and a greater proportion had more than two holes. Possible explanation for these differences are suggested. Yields of undamaged tubers were increased by irrigation even though damage by slugs increased. In this respectMajestic benefitted more thanRedskin from irrigation.

Notes: Abstract A reflex camera that incorporates a light source and spectroscope for recording in-plane displacement fringes formed by reflective diffraction gratings is described and illustrated. A technique for replicating reflective diffraction gratings on plane metallic surfaces is given in detail. Typical fringe patterns of a mild-steel tension specimen containing a long shallow notch obtained using 6000-lines/inch gratings show the elastic deformation of the specimen. The method should prove a useful supplement or alternative to reflective photoelasticity in elasto-plastic studies, particularly when strain distributions in the transition region are of interest.

Notes: Abstract An experimental study of the propagation of flexural waves in an elastic beam of circular cross section subjected to an approximate-step-function bending moment is given. The test beam was a low-carbon-steel bar 2 in. diam × 30-ft long and was suspended in a vertical position by a pin located near the upper end. The step moment was applied at the upper pinned end of the bar by an arrangement of two high-pressure, nitrogen-operated cylinders. The strains were measured with strain gages located at eight stations along the bar. The experimental results are compared with results obtained from a solution of the “Timoshenko” beam by W. Flügge and E. E. Zajac for a semi-infinite pinned-end beam subjected to a suddenly applied bending moment at the pinned end. The experimental results are correlated with the predictions of the theoretical solution.

Description: The origin and age of topography along the west Greenland margin is a matter of continued debate. Evidence for tectonically driven Neogene uplift has been argued from interpretations of offshore seismic surveys, onshore fission-track data and inferred episodes of cooling. Here, analysis of seismic reflection profiles and 1D modelling of exploration wells along the Greenland margin of Davis Strait demonstrate that the data are consistent with a model of ancient continental topography affected by late Cretaceous–early Palaeocene rifting followed by thermal subsidence where offshore Neogene tectonic uplift is not required. This interpretation for the offshore evolution of the west Greenland margin has implications for the adjacent onshore evolution and for other continental margins developed throughout the Atlantic–Arctic rift system.
