Notes: When the aggregates of fairly dry, medium-coarse soil were broken down and firmed over the seed by moderate or heavy pressure, slug damage was reduced. Coarse soil aggregates did not break down so well, particularly under heavy pressure; many seeds remained exposed and were damaged. The seed was also protected by deep planting, with the penalty of late emergence of the seedlings.

Notes: The choice of resting places in bare soil of both immature and mature slugs Was influenced by the size of the soil aggregates. A moderate to coarse soil was preferred and it is suggested that response to contact stimuli may be partly responsible for this behaviour. Soil composed of fine aggregates was preferred for egg-laying sites.

Notes: Abstract A new bioassay was devised in which slugs were allowed to follow trails of the aqueous volatiles isolated from plants by vacuum distillation. Volatiles from lettuce, carrot and dandelion induced greatest response. Components from lettuce, which at their most active concentrations can cause a response similar to that from the whole plant, were identified.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zwei Kartoffelsorten,Redskin undMajestic, wurden unter vier verschiedenen Bewässerungsverfahren kultiviert: 1. Keine Bewässerung. 2.
Notes: Summary Two varieties of potato,Redskin andMajestic, were grown with four water regimes;-unirrigated, irrigated before tuber formation, irrigated after tuber formation, and irrigated throughout the growing season. The damage done by slugs and the yields were measured. Both varieties suffered most damage from slugs when irrigated after the tubers started to form. MoreRedskin tubers were damaged thanMajestic and a greater proportion had more than two holes. Possible explanation for these differences are suggested. Yields of undamaged tubers were increased by irrigation even though damage by slugs increased. In this respectMajestic benefitted more thanRedskin from irrigation.

Notes: It is shown here that certain interpolating polynomials of degrees four and five may not always be uniquely defined on triangular-shaped elements which have one curved side. Conditions which indicate non-uniqueness are given, together with some geometrical interpretations concerning the location of the node on the curved side. A numerical example is given to demonstrate that there ar curves for which every point is unsuitable to be chosen as a node.

Notes: In this article, we give a simple method for developing finite difference schemes on a uniform square gird. We consider a general, two-dimensional, second-order, partial differential equation with variable coefficients. In the case of a nine-point scheme, we obtain the known results of Young and Dauwalder in a fairly elegant fashion. We show how this can be extended to obtain fourth-order schemes on thirteen points. We derive two such schemes which are attractive because they can be adapted quite easily bnto obtain formulas for gird points near the boundary. In addition to this, these formulas only require nine evaluations for the typical forcing function. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the performance of one of the fourth-order schemes.

Notes: In this article, we give a simple method for deriving finite difference schemes on a uniform cubic grid. We consider a general, three-dimensional, second-order, linear, elliptic partial differential equation with variable coefficients. We derive two simple fourth-order schemes. When the coefficients of the second-order mixed derivatives are equal to zero, the fourth-order scheme requires only 19 grid points. When the coefficients of the mixed derivatives are not equal to zero and the coefficients of Uxx, Uyy, and Uzz are equal, we require the 27 points of the cubic grid. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the performance of the two schemes derived. There does not exist a fourth-order scheme involving 27 grid points for the general case.
