Notes: Abstract A green-pigmented cell suspension culture of Marchantia polymorpha was established using the medium of Murashige and Skoog with addition of organic acids of the tricarboxylic-acid cycle, vitamins and sugars plus sugar alcohols, exclusion of kinetin, and replacement of sucrose with glucose. In continuous light, the cells grew exponentially for ca. 10 days; in the dark, they grew only to a slight extent. The light-grown cells contained well-developed chloroplasts, and chlorophyll content reached almost twice that of the intact gametophyte.

Notes: Summary A model of molecular evolution in which the parameter (intrinsic rate of amino acid substitution) fluctuates from time to time was investigated by simulating the process. It was found that the usual method of estimation such as Poisson fitting underestimates this variation of the parameter when remote comparisons are made. At the same time, four distance measures (minimum base difference, Poisson fitting, random nucleotide substitutions and negative binomial fitting) were tested for their accuracy. When the substitution rate is not uniform among the amino acid sites, the negative binomial fitting gives most satisfactory results, however, one needs to know the parameter beforehand in order to use this method. It was pointed out that the fluctuation of the evolutionary rate is expected if the nearly neutral but very slightly deleterious mutations play an important role on molecular evolution.

Notes: Summary There existed circadian change in the sweating rate locally measured from the anterior of the left thigh: the sweating rate showed a remarkable decline during the period 2.00–5.00 h, while at other times throughout the day it generally remained high. This reduction seemed to be independent of sleep or sleeplessness.

Notes: Summary The process of cortical change upon fertilization of eggs of the teleostean fish,Oryzias latipes was investigated. A cortical alveolus (CA) contains colloidal material, a spherical body, and often a membranous structure. Upon insemination, breakdown of the cortical alveoli and elevation of the chorion began around the animal pole and ended at the vegetal pole. It was found that the spherical body was extruded with the colloidal material from the CA: the spherical body swelled after the opening of an aperture and was extruded into the perivitelline space through a large aperture. The empty CA shrank and disappeared completely as a result of the transformation of its envelope to numerous microvilli. The spherical body isolated or in the perivitelline space could be digested quickly by proteolytic enzymes. When spherical bodies in the perivitelline space of a fertilized egg were digested enzymatically, the vitellus came into direct contact with the chorion. The present study seems to show that swollen spherical bodies derived from CA play a role in maintaining a certain distance between the chorion and the vitellus after fertilization.

Notes: Abstract Bacteria, yeasts, and molds which grew in a medium containing a synthetic lignin — a dehydrogenation polymer (DHP) of coniferyl alcohol — as a sole carbon source, were isolated from soil. One fungus, Fusarium solani M-13-1, was found to degrade the DHP most vigorously among the isolated organisms. It was shake-cultured in a medium containing dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol (DHCA) (I), an important lignin model compound, and the following six metabolic products were isolated and identified: 1) Phenylcoumaran-γ′-aldehydic (II) and γ′-carboxylic compounds, 2) phenylcoumaran-α′-aldehydic compound (IV), formed by release of a 2-carbon fragment from the phenylcoumaran-γ′-carboxylic compound, 3) 5-acetylvanillyl alcohol (V), formed by cleavage of the coumaran ring and reduction of the α′-aldehyde group, 4) 5-carboxyvanillyl alcohol (VI), formed by subsequent oxidation of the acetyl group, and 5) the γ′-ether of DHCA (VII), considered to be a by-product. A degradation pathway for DHCA was proposed on the basis of these metabolic products.

Notes: Summary Electrogenic Na+ pump currents during K+-activated hyperpolarizations of bullfrog atrium muscle fibres are increased by adrenaline. The log dose-response relation between these currents and activating K+ concentrations is expressed by a sigmoidal curve, which is shifted in parallel to the left by adrenaline. It is suggested that adrenaline increases the rate of Na+ extrusion without increasing the Na/K coupling ratio and the total number of pumping sites.

Notes: Summary In female rats given a single injection of 1.25 mg 5α-dihydrotestosterone during neonatal life, reactivity of the vaginal mucosa to hormones was permanently altered, so that the rats, when adult, could show vaginal cornification under the hormonic conditions supportive of development of deciduomata in the uterus.

Notes: Abstract A cell line of M. polymorpha was grown photoautotrophically in liquid suspension culture using 1% CO2 in air as sole carbon source. The growth rate in terms of cell dry-weight during the exponential phase was 0.171 and the doubling time was 1.76 d. The rate of increase in chlorophyll was 1.6 times higher than the growth rate. The highest content of chlorophyll was 24 mg g-1 dry weight, and the photosynthetic activity of the cells in the exponential phase, as calculated from the growth rate, was at least 60 μmol mg-1 chlorophyll h-1.

Notes: Summary Copolymer of methyl methacrylate-d8(M1) with a small amount of trityl methacrylate(M2) was radically prepared in tetrahydrofuran and converted into the copolymer of methyl methacrylate-d8 with a small amount of undeuterated methyl methacrylate by the selective hydrolysis of the trityl group and subsequent methylation with diazomethane. From the 1H NMR spectrum of the derived copolymer the assigned coisotactic parameters σ12 and σ21 were determined to be 0.14 and 0.61, respectively. This may be the first example of the unequivocal determination of assigned configurational parameters in cross propagation for copolymerization.
