    Notes: The hindered amine-induced decomposition of polypropylene hydroperoxide was studied in the solid state and in the presence of a liquid solvent and the polymer was compared with model hydroperoxides. The high reactivity of the macrohydroperoxides appears to be related to the adjacent, hydrogen-bonded hydroperoxide groups that occur in the polymer. The hindered amines are converted to nitroxides in the reaction via hydroxylamine intermediates. Amine-induced decomposition of polypropylene hydroperoxide is faster in the absence of a liquid solvent for the amine than in the presence of the solvent, probably because of the strong amine-hydroperoxide association that occurs in the solid state. The decomposition process in the solid state is sufficiently rapid for the reaction to contribute to the effectiveness of hindered amines in the light stabilization of polymers.

    Notes: The plasma polymers formed in glow and nonglow regions of an inductively coupled RF plasma with perfluorobenzene and perfluorocyclohexane are discussed as a function of operating conditions of the plasma by means of ESCA. The core levels of the plasma polymers are shown to be strikingly different but characteristic of a well-defined but complex polymerization scheme. For the nonglow regions fluorine incorporation is shown to be greater than for polymers prepared in the glow regions and a preponderance of CF2 features is apparent. Perfluorobenzene deposits polymer faster than perfluorocyclohexane and changes in component composition of the C1s profile are studied as a function of operating conditions of the gas plasma.

    Notes: A series of polyesters containing conjugated diacetylenic groups in the polymer backbone were synthesized by interfacial condensation of 3,5-hexadiyne-1,6-diol and diacid chlorides of succinic, glutaric, adipic, azealic, sebacic, terephthalic, and isophthalic acids. The polyesters were characterized by their infrared and ultraviolet absorption spectra, elemental analysis, and viscosity measurements. Powder x-ray patterns indicated high degress of crystallinity. The polyesters were found to be highly photoreactive. The relative photoreactivities of the polyester films were determined by the adhesion method. Only small differences in the reactivity have been observed despite structural changes in the R group in the polymer backbone. Differential thermal analysis behavior of all polymers in the temperature range ambient to 300°C and isothermal behavior of HGI at two different temperatures have been studied.

    Notes: Resonance Raman and optical spectroscopy have been used to study foils having a metallic appearance which were produced by the hammering or rolling of single crystals of toluene sulfonate diacetylene polymer. The spectroscopic properties of the bulk material in the foils were found to be almost indistinguishable from those of underformed crystals. In contrast, the blue-green surface skin of the foils appeared to consist of intact polymer chains without significant crystalline order.

    Notes: The protonation of a heterocyclic rigid-rod polymer poly(p-phenylene benzbisthiazole) and its model compound has been studied by UV-visible and Raman spectroscopy. Because of the two nitrogens on the heterocyclic ring, spectroscopic features of unprotonated, half-protonated, and fully protonated structures have been identified. For the fully protonated molecule, there is also an increase in conjugation between the phenyl ring and the heterocyclic ring.

    Notes: In light of novel and problematic diffraction patterns arising through the thermoreversible gelation of isotactic polystyrene, the conformational possibilities were examined with particular reference to other conformational works published recently on this polymer. The specific objective was to ascertain whether highly extended, helical backbone geometries such as are required by the new x-ray patterns are possible or not with a purely isotactic arrangement of side groups. The first realization was that the recently announced low-energy, near-trans conformations are not relevant to the present issue as they do not provide the required extended geometry. Further, specific sampling of the conformational energy map revealed that the required high chain extension may be energetically feasible, contrary to traditional conceptions and to recent conformational calculations elsewhere. The divergences as regards the latter were traced to the specific choice of nonbonded atomic radii - all within generally accepted limits - which accordingly has a crucial effect even to the extent whether specific conformation types are forbidden or energetically stable. The implications this has for conformational analysis in general are being pointed out. While the novel crystal structure has not been solved, the present study at least eliminates the previously believed categoric objections to it being associated with isotactic chains and, beyond this, opens up new perspectives as regards conformational possibilities in polyolefins. The more general problems concerning the nature and origin of the gelation phenomenon nevertheless remain.

    Notes: The structure and morphology of heavily deformed single crystals of a diacetylene polymer have been studied using a combination of x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Crystals have been deformed by both rolling and hammering. The crystals remain intact during deformation and can be reduced in thickness by a factor of over 5 in directions perpendicular to their chain axes. It is found that the chain orientation is maintained during both hammering and rolling. A greenish-colored surface skin develops during both types of deformation but the structure of the interior of the crystals depends upon the type of deformation employed. The interior of the hammered crystals consists of crystal blocks ca. 50 μm thick formed by cleavage perpendicular to the chain direction whereas the rolled crystals tend to be fibrous with no evidence of molecular fracture. The possible deformation mechanisms which have given rise to the different structures have been discussed.

    Notes: Cellulose triacetate (CTA) forms cholesteric mesophases in trifluoroacetic acetic acid (TFA) and mixtures of TFA and CH2Cl2, 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE), and CHCl3. Cholesteric pitches and solution flow times indicate that the order of solvent powers is TFA-CH2Cl2 〉 TFA-1,2-DCE 〉 TFA 〉 TFA-CHCl3, which is the order of decreasing acidity of the solvent systems. With TFA-CH2Cl2 as solvent, the one-fourth power of the pitch varies inversely with the CTA concentration, and increases linearly with temperature. The pitch increases exponentially with time and increases faster the more acidic the solvent. In a magnetic field a cholesteric to nematic transition occurs. A minimum in solution viscosity occurs at 34% w/v of CH2Cl2 for solutions in TFA-CH2Cl2. The miscibility gap as a function of molecular weight depends on the solvent composition and is smaller the higher the acidity of the solvent. Agreement between the experimentally observed A and B points and the theoretical points is better for the Khokhlov and Semenov theory for semiflexible chains than for the original Flory theory or the Flory-Ronca modification.

    Notes: The Raman spectra of 1,6-di-p-methoxybenzene-sulfonyloxy-2,4-hexadiyne (MBS) have been recorded during thermal polymerization. The spectra are similar to those of the related p-toluene-sulfonyloxy monomer but indicate a higher strain in the initially formed MBS polymer chains. Despite this similarity, the polymerization kinetics for the two monomers are markedly different. The polymerization behavior of MBS shows that the polymer chain initiation and propagation are practically independent of lattice strain. Possible causes for this independence are discussed.

    Notes: A series of polypropylene-copolymer laminates produced by biaxial orientation in the 120-155°C range has been characterized by refractometry and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The copolymer was a random ethylene-propylene resin and the IR techniques included tilted-film transmission as well as internal reflection, both using polarized radiation. The IR techniques yielded spectra corresponding to the machine, transverse, and through directions. Similarly, the refractometry gave refractive indices of both components of each laminate along all three axes. Results from the three techniques were compared and contrasted and the validity of the calculated internal reflectance spectra discussed. Practical methods to estimate the source and extent of errors in the latter technique from false radiation and contact problems were explored.
