Notes: The big success of the reaction injection molding (RIM) process has brought about a marked interest in reacting polymer processing. In the present work, we study the technical feasibility of a continuous process to coat metallic conductors using reacting polymers. In the envisioned system, RIM type reactants are mixed and then injected into a tubular reactor through the center of which we pass the cable to be coated. The predictions of the mathematical model developed show that a feasible process can be designed by adequate control of the heat transfer phenomena. The process needs in general, a low reactor temperature and a high cable temperature.

Notes: Photochemistry and Photophysics of 3-(2-Isoxazolinyl)-phenylketones3-Benzoyl-Δ2-1,2-oxazolines (1-6) are formed by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between benzoylnitril-N-oxide (8) and dihydrofurane 9 or 1,3-dioxep-5-enes (10a-c). The preparative yields are small due to the competitive dimerization of the dipole 8. Two stereoisomers are obtained by using 2-substituted 1,3-dioxep-5-enes as dipolarophiles. The different steric position of the substituents in 3-6 gives rise to different spectral data. The synthesized ketones possess triplet states with a high degree of charge transfer character. Therefore, the ability to H-abstraction reaction from alcohols is small. For ketone 2 and methanol as H-donor a rate constant of kHMeOH = 4,1 · 102 M-1s-1 is determined. Also by electron transfer reactions with triethylamine and some onium compounds the reactivity of the T1 of the ketones 1-6 is less compared to those of nπ* excited ketones. The photolysis of the ketones takes place very unselectively and leads to a product mixture. The quantum yields for the decay of the ketones are 10-2 to 10-3.

Description: Author(s): A. Bermudez, P. O. Schmidt, M. B. Plenio, and A. Retzker We introduce a scheme that combines phonon-mediated quantum logic gates in trapped ions with the benefits of continuous dynamical decoupling. We demonstrate theoretically that a strong driving of the qubit decouples it from external magnetic-field noise, enhancing the fidelity of two-qubit quantum g... [Phys. Rev. Description: Author(s): A. Goris, K. M. Döbrich, I. Panzer, A. B. Schmidt, M. Donath, and M. Weinelt The spin-dependent lifetimes of hot electrons in fcc Co films were studied by spin- and time-resolved two-photon photoemission. Even for excitation energies close to the Fermi level, we find almost identical lifetimes for majority and minority electrons. This result contradicts ab initio theories pr... [Phys. Rev. Description: Optical studies are reported for a representative sample of 10 unidentified high galactic latitude X-ray sources that are north of declination minus 25 deg and that have 3U error boxes less than or of the order of 0.5 square degrees. The source 3U 1410-03 is identified with a peculiar emission-line spiral galaxy, NGC 5506, and a distance group 4 rich cluster of galaxies, Abell 2142, is suggested as a possible identification for 3U 1555+27. It is shown that very few of the unidentified high galactic latitude sources are quasi-stellar sources brighter than 17.5 mag, although one possible X-ray quasar, NAB 0137-01, is reported.

Description: IUE observations indicate that the spectrum of 3C 273 is similar to that of other large-redshift quasars. There is a large excess of flux in the range 2400 A to 5300 A, which encompasses the Balmer jump region but which does not appear to be explainable by Balmer emission. The intensity ratio of Lyman-alpha to H-beta is 5.5, in agreement with other measures and a factor 6 smaller than the recombination value. The only absorption lines in the spectrum are due to our Galaxy. There is marginal evidence for a depression of the continuum shortward of the Lyman-alpha emission line, but the errors are too large to warrant any conclusion that 3C 273 has a rich absorption-line spectrum such as that seen in large-redshift quasars. The absence of emission and absorption lines of Fe II leads to the conclusion that resonance fluorescence probably produces the visual Fe II emission lines.

Description: This paper presents optical photometry and spectroscopy of SN 1987D, a Type Ia supernova in the nearby galaxy UGC 7370, during the period immediately subsequent to its discovery. The distance modulus of the galaxy, independently determined by the redshift and the Tully-Fisher (1977) relation, is 32.3 + or - 1.0. The maximum brightness of SN 1987D was V about 13.2 and occurred on April 18, 1987, + or - 4 days; the absolute luminosity is about 0.6 mag brighter than the average for SNe Ia. The spectrum of SN 1987D is typical of SNe Ia, but the expansion velocity (9600 km/s) is considerably lower than average.

Description: Using the Einstein Observatory, X-ray observations of about 80 percent of the quasars in the Bright Quasar Survey located outside the declination range defined by 30 and 60 deg. X-ray emission has been detected above the 3-sigma level for 57 out of 66 quasars observed. This paper describes observations and data reduction and provides a summary of the more detailed analyses and discussion contained in the two accompanying papers (Schmidt and Green 1986, Avni and Tananbaum 1986).
